Rebecca Long Bailey sacked as Shadow Education Minister. Something about posting or reposting anti-semmetic articles.

You think an inquiry within a party known for islamophobia at several levels is not needed?

Given it was called for by a prominent Muslim ex chancellor I would think it would be seen as a good thing..

"Did I miss the bit where she actually said some anti semitic?"

She didn't herself, but she spoke approvingly of things Maxine Peake said which included saying that US cops learnt the 'kneeling on the neck' technique from Israeli special forces which has not been shown to be true.

Which may not seem like much either, but Labour has to be absolutely 100% spotless on this issue now. Any criticism of Israel as a state (and there is plenty that should be made) has to be iron clad.

"It's not so difficult to understand. Anti-semitism was one of the biggest sticks used to beat Corbyn's Labour by the Tories and the largely right-wing media... Starmer is making a statement that it will not be tolerated...

Ta-da... politics. "

And the question about whether or not it is actually anti-semitic doesn't really matter. If people can be made to perceive it is, then that's enough because shock horror politics is more about image than reality.

Ta-da politics.

Long-Bailey should have known better. She's guilty of naivety, but that's enough.

If you are accused of racism when you have said nothing of the sort, and are found guilty..on any level, how is that right?

It's not right, but we're not talking about right and wrong, we're talking about politics. She made a mistake. The fact that she says she doesn't endorse all of the article shows she acknowledges that on some level.

"Did RLB didn't actually read the article? Maxine Peake is such a devout hard left supporter RLB felt compelled to simply retweet the article with the endorsement "Maxine Peake is a diamond"

Bet she's wishing now she had read it in full.

Which is the anti semitic part?

Are you defending her; do you think she should not have been sacked from the shadow cabinet?

I'm waiting for someone to point out where she has been..you know..anti semitic.

SKS has said in person she shared anti Semitic material on the web. So either she is guilty of this or SKS is lying.

I think long Bailey was one of the favourites to take the leadership and was backed by Corbyn and other front bench Labour mp's

Have a look at the material.

So SKS is a lying ?

Have a look at the article.

Your missing my message.

SKS said live on tv she is guilty so sacked her. If you disagree which is fine and she is quoted out of context then it means SKS is a lying. It's one or the other

It seems you think he is lying

At a guess she was given 2 choices.

Go quietly and dont damage the party.

Kick up a fuss and have the media all over it for weeks.

He is not lying in saying the reason he sacked he for.

My contention is what she retweeted was not remotely anti semitic.

Why would he ask her to go if he thought she was innocent

Are you saying he sacked her without checking it for himself. I doubt that very much as would also not look good.

I understand your contention with the quote but SKS says she is guilty and given his legal background I would not doubt him

So it's still either SKS is lying about the sacking or she is guilty

Because if he didnt the party would be hounded.

I dont think its about being 'guilty'or innocent...its not a court case.

He sacked her because of the reaction if he would have kept her on.

"

You seem to be in disagreement with your new leader then

A sackable offense is a guilty or not guilty scenario it does not have to be a matter for courts.

SKS has the evidence to make a decision and has decided guilty and sacked her

Or SKS has the evidence to make a decision and decided innocent and sacked her anyway but lying to the country about it.

I suspect he disagrees with you and found her guilty which also gives him reason to remove her. Maybe first step in moving away from the Cornyn style

Even in politics there should be a degree of integrity.

We have a labour leader who will happily sack a colleague for criticising a country that routinely shoots innocent kids.

I hope he is ready for the backlash

"Did I miss the bit where she actually said some anti semitic?

She didn't herself, but she spoke approvingly of things Maxine Peake said which included saying that US cops learnt the 'kneeling on the neck' technique from Israeli special forces which has not been shown to be true.

Which may not seem like much either, but Labour has to be absolutely 100% spotless on this issue now. Any criticism of Israel as a state (and there is plenty that should be made) has to be iron clad. "

Actually, she just reposted an interview with Peake in the Independent newspaper.

The "conspiracy theory" that US police went for training in Israel is one published by Amnesty international...

She said in the Independent interview, "Systemic racism is a global issue... The tactics used by the police in America, kneeling on George Floyd's neck, that was learnt from seminars with Israeli secret services."

Consider also the Morning Star and the headline from 1 June headlined "Minnesota cops "trained by Israeli forces in restraint techniques"".

Maxine Peake is a big fan of this publication ....

That Corbyn style have a very vocal..very powerful support base.

Indeed they do and Rebecca was among them so should have been more sensible and remain close to the leadership.

First time I have seen you criticise your new leader.

It was a choice between believing Rebecca or SKS as both could not be right.

One of his biggest tasks was to unite the 2 sides of the party.

It doesn't look like he is going to do this."

Although I have not voted Labour for a long time I hope he finds a way as said before a strong opposition is important.

For SKS to lie would also not be good. He has to stop the antisemitism while keeping those involved in anti Semitic activities on board

Actually, she just reposted an interview with Peake in the Independent newspaper.

The "conspiracy theory" that US police went for training in Israel is one published by Amnesty international...

Maxine Peake blames the Israeli secret services for the death of George Floyd and RLB endorses the article....

Eh?

Have you read the article?

That's quite a leap you've made there ..

Maxine Peake is a big fan of this publication ...."

Actually, no. There is no source for her assertion while being interviewed. We don’t know why she thought to pluck out of the air a link between the Israeli secret services and the death of George Floyd. She said it though.

The reference to a 2016 Amnesty International report was introduced into the article by The Independent journalist.

"

And that makes her an anti semite?"

It doesn't, but there is a long, long history of conspiracy theories about how Jewish people are involved in all kinds of powerful, secretive, nefarious manipulation and wrong doing. Even hinting at such a thing, given the situation Labour are in, is a problem for them.

Someone relatively senior like RLB has to be absolutely 100% spotless about what they approve of on social media.

Is it fair? No, probably not. But Starmer's decision is understandable.

"Israel is revered by Jewish people as much as Mecca is revered by Muslim people, and Vatican City by Catholic people. An insult to Israel is an insult to Jewish people.

So they are above criticism?"

Of course not, but in this instance it was perceived as an insult, not a criticism.

"If only boris could stand by his word and sort out the islamophobia in the tory party..

Islamophobia

“a word created by fascists, and used by cowards, to manipulate morons.” Christopher Hitchens (and others)

Hitchens never said that but why let facts get in the way of an argument.

He did, he used it alot but he always pointed out it wasn't his quote - but dont let facts get in the way "

Evidence please

"So she is guilty and sacked ended of, or the labour leader just sacking her to keep the peace. If so he is a right little shit, and got no bottle."

If he hadn’t sacked her, you would have probably said that the Labour will never change and that it is rifed with antisemitism. In other words, as you’re part of the Bojo lunatics, we can’t expect much objectivity from you on this issue.

However, I like seeing the tory supporters fretting about Starmer. When they are honest with themselves before falling asleep at night they know deep down that Starmer is a decent bloke that comes across as a credible politician, a guy that seems to have values compared to the buffoon and proven incompetent liar we have for PM, However, they just can’t admit it.

And before you accuse me of being biased too, I’ll just say that there have been conservative politicians in the past that I found credible and respectable. The list is fairly long actually but at the moment, you have a real bunch of clowns at the top of this party. They’re just different league... A bunch of mini à Trumps. Nothing to be proud of.

Actually, she just reposted an interview with Peake in the Independent newspaper.

The source for her assertion being Amnesty international. "

If someone taught you how to shoplifting without getting caught you would not be in front of the judge in the first place

Thats what I meant

So who would you be blaming and why would you need to get off Scot free as you would never be caught

Maybe the analogy wasnt perfect.

If someone shows you how to commit a crime..you then do said crime..if you get caught you cant Blame it on the person who showed you."

If you give information when you know someone will use it to commit a crime, or if you are ‘willfully blind’ about whether they will commit a crime, then you providing information on how to commit a crime could very likely be a crime. At a minimum you would be facilitating the commission of an offense and you may be involved in a conspiracy.

So saying that Israel trained the police on how to kill Floyd is saying they are responsible for his death. As there is no evidence that Israel did train the police in how to kill Floyd it's not unreasonable to believe that those spreading this false information have an alternative agenda and also, because it is Israel, not unreasonable to assume that that agenda is anti-semitic.

The words themselves are clearly not anti-semitic, but when you make a grab to apportion some of the blame of George Floyd's murder to Israel it looks desperate. Of course you can wangle some sort of connection, but it naturally raises suspicion over your motivation because like it or not, plenty of anti-semites conceal their hatred of Judaism in criticism of Israel.

I think Israel should absolutely be criticised for many of its activities, but trying to put some blame on them for systemic racism and it's horrendous legacy in the US is stupid and unnecessary.

Another point is that the article wasn't even about this.It was about labour voters not voting for corbyn.Apparently it was 1 small piece in the article. You could argue rlb didnt read the whole piece but when you get to the stage where people are being sacked for 1 line in an article it's a very slippery slope.

If someone showed me how to shoplift without getting caught, when I'm up in front of the judge..I'll blame the other person and I'll get off Scott free.

If someone taught you how to shoplifting without getting caught you would not be in front of the judge in the first place

Thats what I meant

So who would you be blaming and why would you need to get off Scot free as you would never be caught

Maybe the analogy wasnt perfect.

If someone shows you how to commit a crime..you then do said crime..if you get caught you cant Blame it on the person who showed you.

No its really not.

The Israeli police force sometimes use a heavy handed approach.Ergo I hate all Jews.

Its ridiculous beyond words.

But that's the crux of it..at worst it's being critical of the Israelie police as being over zealous. Its not blaming all jews.Wasnt there a move last year to try and make any criticism of Israel deemed to be anti semitic. It appears we are at that stage already.

Another point is that the article wasn't even about this.It was about labour voters not voting for corbyn.Apparently it was 1 small piece in the article. You could argue rlb didnt read the whole piece but when you get to the stage where people are being sacked for 1 line in an article it's a very slippery slope."

You can criticise Israel for heavy- handed policing, but that's one thing and systemic racism in the US is another. There are links, sure... but as I said, it's unnecessary to force them.

It's an unfortunate political reality that if you want to criticise Israel you have to take pains to do so carefully. The George Floyd stuff is a total reach.

Corbyn was always playing against a stacked deck. His entire leadership was conducted against a relentless right-wing media-led smear campaign which constantly threw muck at him. A lot of it fell off, but some of it stuck. When they realised the antisemitism stuck best, they threw more of that at him and Labour. It was disgusting to see.

Agree 100%

There was a caller to 5 live who was Jewish and said if corbyn got in he genuinely feared for his family.

Yet overnight this rampant anti semitism seemed to vanish.

If a boss sacks an employee who is of use, and committed no wrong-doing, then that boss is an idiot. If Starmer sacked Rebecca Long Bailey, he must have had a valid reason. If he did not have a valid reason, he is an idiot. From the above posts, many seem to believe he was wrong which suggests they may think he is an idiot. Labour have an idiot for a leader. Again.

Sorry, I've got to agree. Since when did comment on state security procedures become anti-semitic?

No, I'm not a Labour supporter or a particular fan of Rebecca Wrong-Daily but this is a transparent excuse to cull her.

Well, it's a bit more subtle than this.

A lot of this is about optics and not just a matter of whether or not she did something wrong. People in this thread are focusing on that without taking into account Starmer's need to manage the party's image.

A 'valid reason' can include wanting to be so absolutely above board, and demonstrating that there is zero tolerance on the issue, that Starmer is prepared to react much more harshly than if the Corbyn years hadn't happened.

That's pretty rubbish for RLB but it's not necessarily bad leadership.

Again, these aren't the only choices.

The reality is RLB didn't do anything hugely wrong, but Labour have to come down incredibly hard on anything that even looks slightly dodgy on this issue. That's where they've been left after the Corbyn years.

They are pandering to the right wing media who have cooked up a ridiculous smear campaign.

Do you think the likes of the mail will be placated with this?

I read before that ks had no choice to do this because labour are in such a weak position but what point does someone actually stand up and say "no Israel should not be able to trample over human rights'and not be accused of being an anti semite.

He was supposed to unite the party. Its not a good start.

From what I see on the news

RLB reposted this article

SKS is informed, reviews it, find it antisemitic ( his words when interviewed) and asks her to remove it.

RLB refuses

SKS sacks her

If the post as many say is perfectly ok why did SKS ask her to remove it and then when she refused sack her? Whats wrong with him, hopefully he is not failing already. It could be the tip of the iceberg

No he sacked her to appease the media and the right wing of the party.

If being against anti-semitism is now right wing count me in.

For about the billionth time..show me evidence of the anti semitic bit"

I'll repeat it again.

it does seem strange that yet again another world problem is ending being laid at the feet of Israel and the Jews, especially by the left. That's where the anti-semitism comes ín.

American police officers have had training in Britain and many other countries too. Why is Israel being singled out.

I havent seen anybody claim Israel trained the officer that killed floyd. I have only seen them point out that us police are taking their training from a police force know for their human rights violations.

The implication being that the type of heavy handedness that dis kill floyed is actively encouraged by us law enforcement.

Using your own words that said aiding in a crime is 'facitating the commision of an offence', then israel training the us police to use unlawful force implies israel are also guilty, does it not?

I'm going to have to cogitate on that.

However it does seem strange that yet again another world problem is ending being laid at the feet of Israel and the Jews, especially by the left. That's where the anti-semitism comes ín.

Perhaps the percieved anti semitism is not actually hatred for israel, rather it is a hatred and frustration with those that blindly defend what should not be defended.

Btw, i am not saying ISRAEL should not be defended at all, only their wrong doings.

Imsgine it was say iran who were getting upto the type of shit Israel are doing re the Palestinians, how many times have the un criticised them?there would be calls for sanctions, interventions etc.

Yet for some reason even the most mildest rebuke, like this one results in another anti semitic shit storm.

And ironically gives the perope who do hold the bizarre 'jews run the world theory'even more credence.

Just because you criticise Israel doesnt make you an anti semite."

I agree and I often criticise Israel myself. However Israel is not the only country that has trained US police so why blame them more or less than other countries. It just seems odd to me that the death of a guy in US by the people who are meant to protecting him is now being laid at the feet of Israel and the Jews.

No its really not.

The Israeli police force sometimes use a heavy handed approach.Ergo I hate all Jews.

Its ridiculous beyond words."

That's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is the argument that I guy killed in the US by illegal use of force is some how the fault of Israel and the Jews because some US police have been on a training course there is anti-semitic.

The Israeli police force sometimes use a heavy handed approach.Ergo I hate all Jews.

Its ridiculous beyond words.

You could argue rlb didnt read the whole piece but when you get to the stage where people are being sacked for 1 line in an article it's a very slippery slope.

Like I said previously I think treating them as a special case, only gives ammunition to the conspiracy theorists. No other country in the world would get away with the kind of shit they pull. They do have a very cosy relationship with America and if someone has put 2 and 2 together and got 5..that's clumsy..not racist.

The other bizarre thing is for years the 'loony left 'were seeing as being too liberal on equal rights..yet when Corbyn threatened the gmnt overnight they turned into a snarling bunch of racists."

We’ve been banging on antisemitism in the Labour party for a long time. In the meantime, we have a guy leading this country who used words such as pecaninnes, bank robbers to refer to Muslim people and he’s never felt the need to apologise for this. Viva the Daily Mail, the Sun and the Express who are more racist than anybody in this country...

Do not forget that the vast majority of anti-semitism claims submitted to the ECHR are from members of the Jewish LABOUR Movement. These are Labour's own supporters, people who support the same Labour party as non-Jewish members. They have the same or similar values as non-Jewish members and wish for the same treatment as non-Jewish Labour supporters. These are YOUR people and you still cannot stop accusing them of exaggerating and even lying. This thread is like watching sharks turning on an injured shark and savaging it to death. It really is no surprise that Labour are so unpopular and win nothing.

"Do not forget that the vast majority of anti-semitism claims submitted to the ECHR are from members of the Jewish LABOUR Movement. It really is no surprise that Labour are so unpopular and win nothing."

Does this correlate with the report that Corbyn was smeared by false claims by those in his own party,?

"We’ve been banging on antisemitism in the Labour party for a long time. In the meantime, we have a guy leading this country who used words such as pecaninnes, bank robbers to refer to Muslim people and he’s never felt the need to apologise for this. Viva the Daily Mail, the Sun and the Express who are more racist than anybody in this country...

"

"Did I miss the bit where she actually said some anti semitic?

She didn't herself, but she spoke approvingly of things Maxine Peake said which included saying that US cops learnt the 'kneeling on the neck' technique from Israeli special forces which has not been shown to be true.

Which may not seem like much either, but Labour has to be absolutely 100% spotless on this issue now. Any criticism of Israel as a state (and there is plenty that should be made) has to be iron clad.

No its really not.

The Israeli police force sometimes use a heavy handed approach.Ergo I hate all Jews.

Its ridiculous beyond words.

You could argue rlb didnt read the whole piece but when you get to the stage where people are being sacked for 1 line in an article it's a very slippery slope.

Like I said previously I think treating them as a special case, only gives ammunition to the conspiracy theorists. No other country in the world would get away with the kind of shit they pull. They do have a very cosy relationship with America and if someone has put 2 and 2 together and got 5..that's clumsy..not racist.

The other bizarre thing is for years the 'loony left 'were seeing as being too liberal on equal rights..yet when Corbyn threatened the gmnt overnight they turned into a snarling bunch of racists.

Not snarling racists just subconscious anti-semites with an inability to see it in themselves. A bit like people on the right who say things like "I'm not a racist, I have many black friends, but...."

Would you say Corbyn was anti semitic?

I don't think Corbyn is an anti-semite but that does not mean I don't think he's ever been anti-semitic. There is a difference.

"

In today's hyper reality I'm not sure.

Corbyn was leader of his party. A good and competent leader takes responsibility. Your posts are increasingly showing a worrying, but not surprising approval of racism. Perhaps you should pose your objections to your own party's members - the JLM?

She has done a piece in the guardian today..she was asked to retweet it to put it into context which she did.

She was then told it wasnt sufficient

Sounds like his mind was made up but She admits full responsibility

It's part of what's poor about our society, this inclusion of others material which raises its prominence, whilst becoming a distraction away from the person and their merit, who's doing the re-tweeting. It would be better to just use your own material and behaviour.

I say this as someone who doesn't use the platform. Highlighting something that could be viewed as anti-Semitic, suggests poorly conceived behaviour. In most jobs it would be a serious cause for action but in a leadership position, with that background problem, it was probably the right thing to do to sack her. He seems a fair and just person and they probably share the same goals, so I'm assuming that she can rehabilitate her credentials.

No he sacked her to appease the media and the right wing of the party.

If being against anti-semitism is now right wing count me in.

For about the billionth time..show me evidence of the anti semitic bit

I'll repeat it again.

it does seem strange that yet again another world problem is ending being laid at the feet of Israel and the Jews, especially by the left. That's where the anti-semitism comes ín.

American police officers have had training in Britain and many other countries too. Why is Israel being singled out.

Well let's ignore the very cosy relationship America has with israel (could you imagine Iran getting away with the type of shit Israel do)

The israelie security services are not known for their tolerance so a rather clumsy assumption has been made.

But at worst it's a criticism of Israel..not jews in gwneral.

And again this is The crux..the left do have an issue with Israel..mainly due to their inhumane treatment of Palestinians.

This has somehow translated into anti semitism.

Its nothing of the sort.

Say what you like about Corbyn..but he is a pacifist and doesnt have a racist bone in his body but in some quarters he was being akin to Hitler.

Fucking insane.

He's not "being akin to Hitler" but you bit the nail on the head when you say "doesn't have a racist bone in his body" because the reality is, like every single one of us, he definitely does. That's the blind spot that so many on the left have which leads them to make basically anti-semites decisions like the wall mural one where Corbyn and many others on the left just thought it was an anti rich bankers thing when it was pretty obvious to the rest of us that it was anti-semitic propaganda almost at the Hitler-Goebbels level.

The fact is is that Floyd's death had nothing to do with Israel, even if all the allegations are true.

There was a call on lbc (that London radio station)which made comparisons with corbyn and concentration camps.

Another call to radio 4 saw a man said he feared for his family future because of what had happened in the past.

Ok fair enough everyone single one of us is prone to racism but of all the criticisms of corbyn ..racism would be way down on the list.

I dont tbh

If you are right why has 'anti semitism row engulfs labour party'been an almost daily headline for months before the election.

If what you are saying is..the left cannot see anti semitism before their eyes..perhaps the media should have focused on where this came from..but they didnt..the finger was consistently pointed at corbyn.

Which may not seem like much either, but Labour has to be absolutely 100% spotless on this issue now. Any criticism of Israel as a state (and there is plenty that should be made) has to be iron clad.

No its really not.

The Israeli police force sometimes use a heavy handed approach.Ergo I hate all Jews.

Its ridiculous beyond words.

You could argue rlb didnt read the whole piece but when you get to the stage where people are being sacked for 1 line in an article it's a very slippery slope.

Is there?

In today's hyper reality I'm not sure.

He is very critical of isreal..this doesn't mean he is an anti semite.

Do you not agree that the whole circus was exaggerated just a tad compared to say the Islamophobia within the Tories?

The fact that the press does not cover islamophobia in the Tory Party, in fact even whether the Tory Party is islamophobic, or more or less islamophobic than the Labour Party is or is not antisemitic, is totally irrelevant. I totally fail to see how, even if the Tory Party was full of "froothing at the mouth, kick 'em all out and pull down their mosques' islamophobes it would in anyway excuse any anti-semitism in the Labour party.

It's quite simple ..its called playing on an even playing field.

Look at the column inches devoted to as in labour.

Then Islamophobia in tory.1 towers well above the other.Im not saying it condones anything but its perfectly acceptable to ask the question..why?"

What you fail to acknowledge is the Labour Party is only the second political party to be investigated by the UK's human rights watchdog.

The other being the BNP.!
