Indeed. Well done. Nice to know they can be shamed into doing the right thing, occasionally.

Feeding children who live in poverty isn't the sort of thing anyone but a Tory would think twice about.

Good on the Government for changing their mind.

such a callous approach.... if you can find billions to bail out your buddies in the banks and business.. then 120million is a drop in the ocean... this way it guarentees that the poorest kids get at least one good meal a day!

I don't know how accurate the 120 million is and would never want children from poor backgrounds going hungry. If the figure is accurate maybe the top footballers could fund it for this first year to show the government it really can be done. Either way glad its being sorted out

No its their parents or guardians responsibility. Footballers like many wealthy sports people do all sorts of good deeds that are not their responsibility I just thought this would be a great gesture and as said show it can be done in case this or future governments try to reverse it

For all of those grumbling... let me put this into some sort of perspective

This scheme is part of the Covid response.....They did the same thing over the Easter holidays and no one batted an eye..... the extra 120 mil will account for an additional 0.1% in the total money spent on the covid response

0.1%!!!!!!!

So for 0.1% you are prepared to let some of the poorest children in England go without what will get them at least one good meal a day...

Let that sink in....

People seem to forget these are not "normal" times

Exactly Fabio.

Many parents who were already struggling before may well have lost their jobs, lost their access to family/friend support networks etc who may well have helped support with feeding their kids during "normal" times.

Many parents have lost access to childcare which may have left them unable to go to work at all.

The attitude of some people is quite disgusting.

Currently it is a one time thing, then it will go back to how it's been for the years before Covid hit.

Dunno?

Frankly I wouldnt trust those 2 'papers'as far as I could spit.

Wouldnt surprise me though...some people will always try to abuse any system.

Perhaps it would have been an idea for the vouchers to be only applicable for food,?

"Did anyone else notice Keir Starmer take credit for this in an interview yesterday?

Link?

On the BBC news

He welcomed the u turn

Cant see him taking any credit.

Really!

'We had to push them all the way'

That's what he said."

Labour raised an opposition motion in Parliament to change the Govt position. Marcus Rashford encouraged enough Tory MPs that BJ was wrong, to avoid a defeat in Parliament BJ U turned. So yes Labour did something, so did Marcus Rashford, so did enough Tory MPs.

The question should be - which one of the ‘advisors’ told BJ this was a good idea to screw poor children? Cummings?

And here again we see a person actively saying children should go hungry because, possibly, a few parents abuse the system. It's the typical 'Single mother lives in mansion with 10 Kids' headline....one absolutely rare anomaly that right wing zealouts use to say 'just ban the whole thing them'.

I look at some of the comments on here in utter despair. If you find yourself on a forum actively arguing for children to go hungry, then I really think you need to take look at yourself.

Boris wastes 53 million on a bridge that never had a brick laid.

Chris Grayling has wasted between 2.71 - 3 billion pounds with various blunders.....awarding shipping companies contracts that had no ships!

Then you people come on here moaning about feeding hungry children. What the hell is happening in this country?

It's the result of 10 years of blaming the victim (remember Cameron's strikers v slivers?)we live in a country where the most vulnerable are demonized. But thats what Tories do.Its in their DNA.

All systems for abused..mps pay scandal, billionaires paying buttons in tax, self employed declaring a fraction of their income, and people blaggimg benefits.

Only 1 group get tv programmes made about them.

I have know idea if it’s happening elsewhere , I am sure you will be the first to tell us if it is

I would hope anyone would want to highlight widespread abuse of the vouchers.

This is why I suggest Mr Rashford getting involved again

Wide spread abuse? How many people have been caught abusing the voucher system?

I don’t know , that’s why I asked the question "

I see, keep looking , maybe you can find a few more people abusing the system to help your agenda

""Parents in Hull have been using vouchers designed to purchase food for children who cannot access free school meals during lockdown to buy alcohol, cigarettes, bras and Lego, according to supermarket staff. "

I wonder if this is just happening in Hull, or if this is going on up and down the country?

I would like to hear Mr Rashfords thoughts on this ...

Source the hull daily mail (owned by the mail)and the sun.

Try Reach Plc, formerly known as Trinity Mirror.

newspaper ownership aside, are Asda staff lying about being abused by disgruntled parents trying to purchase booze and fags with the starving childrens food vouchers?

“ Parents in Hull have been using vouchers designed to purchase food for children who cannot access free school meals during lockdown to buy alcohol, cigarettes, bras and Lego, according to supermarket staff. "

Do you condone this?

Ah, so some parents in Hull are abusing the system and you want to stop it for everyone else??

I haven’t said that.

I asked if this is only going on in Hull or if it is happening in other parts of the country.

I think it’s only fair the children are fed. that’s what the vouchers are for.

Strange that not everyone agrees with this

And strangely quite about Boris and Grayling wasting vast amounts. I suppose it's ok if those in power waste money, if poor people do it, uproar!!!

Not really.Lets ignore the rags record of telling the truth for once and assume its genuine.

You have given a supposed example of people abusing a system. You have stated its 'widespread'despite the evidence being just 1 shop.

Not one person has defended the pond life who have tried to get away with this. You asked what rashford would say..my guess is the same as every other sensible person on the planet.

Maybe you could suggest a solution to the issue as it's such a concern for you?

I asked if this is only going on in Hull or if it is happening in other parts of the country.

I also wonder what Mr Rashford has to say about this. Perhaps he could use his profile to ask parents not to do it.

I don’t know , that’s why I asked the question

I see, keep looking , maybe you can find a few more people abusing the system to help your agenda

You don’t agree with highlighting abuse of the vouchers and getting someone high profile to send out a message to ask parents to stop doing it?

I think it’s only fair the children are fed. that’s what the vouchers are for.

Strange that not everyone agrees with this

Oh, I agree. But, and I'm sure you don't, is like to make sweeping generalisations. You seem to be saying that because a few people are doing it, so we shouldn't feed anybody? I'm sure you are not saying that.

My questions and reasons are very clear.

Do you agree that Marcus had done something amazing?

Yes, which is why I suggest him using his profile again to ask parents not to abuse the vouchers.

Ask a tiny minority of parents not to abuse the vouchers?

Is it a tiny minority?

You said you didn’t know if the issue is going on in other parts of the country.

That’s why I asked the question "

Isn’t it a tiny minority? You don’t know for sure if the issue is going on in other parts of the country. You seem very keen on highlighting the negatives , what is your agenda ? Don’t you think the positives outweigh the negatives?

“ Parents in Hull have been using vouchers designed to purchase food for children who cannot access free school meals during lockdown to buy alcohol, cigarettes, bras and Lego, according to supermarket staff. "

Do you condone this?

. It would obviously be a shame if the scheme was abused , it is there to help children , it gives parents a voucher for £15 a week , Iain Duncan Smith ( who introduced Universal Credit ) claimed on his government ( tax payer funded ) expenses for a breakfast to the value of £37 ,so taking that figure we are funding less than half a breakfast a week for each child , I hope parents will treat the tax payer funded meal for their offspring with more respect than IDS

Like the staff in Asda who refused to accept the children food vouchers for the purchase of booze and fags , the IDS expenses claim was also rejected Quite right .

"Superb work! Well done Sir!!"

Impressive that he raised this issue so vocally but it wasn't anything to do with him. The PM hadn't even heard.

The full story is in the Daily Mash

"How to pretend it wasn't a U-turn

17th June 2020

COMPLETELY changed your mind in 24 hours, making transport secretary Grant Shapps look a dick again? Pretend you didn’t:

Never heard of him

Claim to be completely ignorant of that day’s leading news story, the footballer Marcus Rashford, the sport of football and the concept of sport. Add that you are very busy despite the colossal lack of evidence.

If there’s been some kind of furore and an entire country thinks you’re a tightfisted bastard, ignore it. Act as if your change of heart arrived as if by magic and no one else’s opinion had any influence on it.

Thought it through and reconsidered

Alternatively, you could pretend you thought about your decision really hard and then reversed it after examining the evidence. It’s not something you’d ever do, but necessary when even the most hardline rightwing lunatics that voted for you are having doubts.

Better you notice this than the other thing

Running the country with the most shambolic response to a global pandemic? Anything that distracts, even a humiliating u-turn and modest act of decency you had your arm twisted into agreeing to, is fine.

Sorry not sorry

Having the balls to admit you were wrong and apologise is an act of integrity, so don’t do it. Your ego might take a hit and that must be avoided because though massive, it’s terrifyingly fragile, like a blimp.

Don’t give a toss

The chances are that if you’re this easily persuaded into a U-turn you don’t give a toss anyway, so why pretend? Ruffle your hay bale hair and carry on regardless."

" It would obviously be a shame if the scheme was abused , it is there to help children , it gives parents a voucher for £15 a week , Iain Duncan Smith ( who introduced Universal Credit ) claimed on his government ( tax payer funded ) expenses for a breakfast to the value of £37 ,so taking that figure we are funding less than half a breakfast a week for each child , I hope parents will treat the tax payer funded meal for their offspring with more respect than IDS

Like the staff in Asda who refused to accept the children food vouchers for the purchase of booze and fags , the IDS expenses claim was also rejected Quite right ."

,,,,,,,,..,,being reported that one third of those on tax payer funded furlough scheme have been asked to work , I hope that the money being saved by these unscrupulous employers is not being used to by fags and booze

"Another 120 million to find who feeds them any other times. I through it was child benefit, oh well maybe we can take it out of the aid budget it's there to feed starving children.

such a callous approach.... if you can find billions to bail out your buddies in the banks and business.. then 120million is a drop in the ocean... this way it guarentees that the poorest kids get at least one good meal a day!

I don't know how accurate the 120 million is and would never want children from poor backgrounds going hungry. If the figure is accurate maybe the top footballers could fund it for this first year to show the government it really can be done. Either way glad its being sorted out

It's not footballers responsibility to feed kids imho."

It's not specifically footballer's responsibility but it should be our responsibilities, including footballer's, to make sure no kid goes hungry.

With that said what does normally happen to these kids over the Summer Holidays and where do most of them normally get fed from over the holidays? Is this measure this year just a one of measure because there maybe more hungry children this year than normal? Is there more than usual?

Difference is, I never wanted to be PM. He did, and is clearly not fit for purpose. I know it's hard, it's hard to admit you are wrong. But soon, you will realise the emperor is naked. A lot of us can see it, you will soon.

But the reality is that we have the current PM because the alternative person got less seats.

In fact their worse defeat since 1935.

I know its a hard pill to swallow for you but Labour supporters voted for the current PM.!

So, he is beyond scrutiny?? I know it's a hard pill to swallow, but the guy is useless

Your opinion of course.

Interesting post and quite worrying for the future. Assuming your correct Labour need to find out why their supporters decided not to bother to vote especially as the alternative was Boris. I'm not sure about comparing to other Labour leaders helps as the one thing they all have in common apart from Blair is that they lost.

A mistake in my opinion that parties seem to make after a defeat is to look at blaming external factors and playing with figures rather than looking at themselves and being honest where things went wrong

The Labour Together project have done a report which states they have a 'mountain to climb'.

It also says thier vote share at the last GE fell by 8% and a new leader and the end of Brexit will not be enough to win back power.

Let's see if people at Labour HQ take notice of it.!

Interesting.I always thought conservatism was about free market ideology. The trickle down effect was supposed to do what it said on the tim.Thatcher espoused the I'm alright Jack attitude and said there was no such thing as society.

Yet in 2020 we all have s collective responsibility to not see kids go hungry.

................... When changing their mind the Tories have made it clear that the U-turn is for this year only and due to Covid-19 , Some MPs have been trying to ensure that children who are entitled to free school meals also receive vouchers during all holidays but with no success ,Even on the morning of the vote , the Conservative DWP minister was telling the media that the Tory Party would be instucting their MPs to vote against Labour's motion that vouchers should continue to be issued for this Summer ,,Had the Tories not carried out their U-turn and it had gone to a vote in Parliament it would gave looked embarrassing (,due to the new voting system where MPs walk by the speakers Chair ) every tory MP voting against children receiving the vouchers would have appeared on TV in a line one after the other saying "no" ,, I wonder if this ,potential bad publicity had more to do with the U-turn than Marcus Rashford or concern about children eating ,,, ( but well done Marcus you certainly helped )
