I answered a similar thread the other day but cant find it now….

But the BB you have does not have GPS.

The maps app in the phone may use positioning found via cell tower triangulation, but this may not be supported in the Fabs mobile site.

Im guessing a little, but I think that will be why.

Thank you for the help, i assumed (dummy me) that because it could find map locations that fab could find me.

Once again thank you.

I had wondered if this was the problem, but, according to this post, in http://www.fabswingers.com/forum/mobile/120065, by "bangor up for a laugh"

"I think that I read on another thread that the 8500 doesn't have GPS. If you open your browser and browse to maps.google.co.uk, does it show your position?

Yes all maps show where I am

"

the browser must be passing the location. Does anybody have a non-GPS BB that works with the "Who's Near" function?

Obviously, we await Admin answering, but I would imagine that apps need coding to work with cell tower locations…. Is the Fab Mobile site coded to work with that?

Cell tower info can be very accurate. Get an ipad (that hasnt got 3g/gps) and connect it to wifi…. open maps and it gets your location.

Get a mobile phone, turn off GPS, open maps, and it will still get a fairly decent location if you have enough masts nearby.

So, all depends on if the app is coded for non GPS locations.
