"Will it have a button that you can press that will make a tune play on the person's mobile so you can follow the sound and go find who's on fab nearby? "
And then you leave the app running by accident one night and get a knock on the door at 2am from some scuzzy dirtbag, tanked up and won't take no for an answer...
If they impliment your idea I'm opting out. |

I don't understand why people can't grasp the concept of this. It's not the CIA taking satellite pics of you saying there's a swinger !
It narrows the search down to within a couple of miles not underneath your bloody bed |

Thought so. It's like I feared.
Wait until it's late one night. Drive along until some moves from 3-5 miles to 1-2 miles. You now know that person is almost exactly 2 miles from you.
Google trianglulation, come back and tell me that doesn't sound worrying. |

Are you being serious??! You now know where someone is within a 2 mile radius... Unless you're in the middle of a desert with no trees, houses and just a person stood there, there's no chance of locating them! |

I guess I should have added 1-2 miles is the tolerance of accuracy, not the exact measurement to a moccasin clad foot. So in theory you could be right, but you would have to tap on an awful lot of shoulders and ask if they were Sally the swinger |

Good grief is there now a dress code? I don't own a flag or any moccasins. It's so unfair this swinging lark.
I have just eaten a kfc and dropped some popcorn chicken down my cleavage for later though. So it's all good. |

Yes I'm being perfectly serious. It's basic GCSE maths.
You are at point (1), you know that someone is exactly 2 miles away from you, but don't know which direction. You draw a 2 mile circle on a map with the centre at point (1).
You then travel until you see the person tick back to the 3-5 mile catagory. You know they are now 3 miles away. This is point (2).
You draw a 2nd circle on your map, this time with a range of 3 miles, centred on point (2). The places where the 2 circles cross over are potential locations - there will be two of them.
Now turn roughly back on yourself, so you are travelling back the way you came but heading off to one side - not the clearest instruction, but it's been a long day and I'm not sure how to phrase it better.
At some point you'll see the range tick back to the 0-2 mile range. Mark this third point on your map as point (3). Draw yet another circle on the map, another 2 mile one.
If you've done this right, the 3rd circle will only intersect the other two in one place. You know know exactly where the person is.
-------------------------
Of course the road network will complicate things a bit, but the same basic principle will apply. As long as the person isn't moving you'll be fine. So if I were to do this I'd do it late at night when most people will be at home. But not too late before they log off for the night.
Feeling safe now? |

"and if someone has done that and narrowed his search down to one property...
what does he do when it turns out to be a 10 storey high block of flats? "
Depending if the gps thingy takes into account height. If it does then either a helicopter or a convenient large hill would work. Other than that then he'd be stuffed. |

Oh one last comment cos I cant help myself - you cant actually see the distance dropping down with every step you take. That would be a 2 mile laser measurer |

Nope, just pointing out a potential security risk that's worth bearing in mind.
I never said anything about leaving it running by accident, I suggested that the best stalking time would be when most people are at home and using the site - I know that I use the mobile site while at home a lot through sheer convenience. I'm sure many other people do too.
And no, you don't have to a maths geological scientist (what?) anyone over the age of about 14 who actually paid attention in class should be able to do this.
The easiest solution from the site's side would be instead of having people as being within 0-1 miles, 2-3 miles, 4-6 miles etc. would be to have more vague catagories: Quite Close, Close, Nearby, Not too far etc...
And is you do rightly point out, it's an opt-in function. |

Doh !
Easiest solution when at home is to draw the curtains. This will prevent the gps seeing you.

isnt it already here?
im sure they were on about the new search where it tells you how far away people are etc, i dont think its going to be doing live gps tracking showing peoples movements lol,
just sorting search results by distance etc is what i thought was getting put in and is already put in and its done off post codes not gps.
i think for the gps its probs needing to be a actaual mobile app and not just a webpage maybe!
well even if it does im on a dating site that does a simialr thing in their app and it wont show you where people are, it will just say this person so many miles from you, and it isnt a live update, it will only refresh and update your location once or twice a day, none the apps use gps constantly apart from maps when doing a route, because it would just kill your batter off quickly |

Avoiding hobbits is easy: don't put your finger in Gollum's ring, don't meddle in the affairs of wizards, avoid the Mirkwood, don't go into Smaug's lair, don't walk into Mordor and whatever else you do, don't get out your palantir and polish it in public.
If that doesn't help and you get hobbits anyway. Keep them away from sunlight, don't get them wet and don't feed them after midnight. |

Don't worry I'm just knocking up a manual one to use in the interim. You just need a ball of string, some baked beans tins and a massive triangle. A two mile wide one would be ideal just need to work out how to get it on the bus. |

"Thought so.
Now...that is a great answer,,,well done you!!! "

I'm all up for having the same fun as the Grindr gays. Roll on triangulation-calculating swingers. If you're fit funny and fabulous I can't wait for you to track me down. I'll be the lass with a smile on her face by the courgettes in Waitrose. No, no THAT one. Darn it, this GPS isn't as accurate as I thought... |

Surely all this is gonna be is people using there mobile phones to access the site just like the new search ie- ten miles away for example. They couldn't possibly show you. Addresses just think what the weirdos n stalkers would do!

That sounds like crazy paranoia! Even the most sophisticated satellites can only narrow something down to 20 metres. Just don't put any
'Gone swinging' signs in your window |

If you have location services turned on, on your phone. When you access the site it will ask you if you want to allow fab to use your current location. If you say yes, when people use the search function they will be able to specify by current distance. The results displayed will be categorised into distances e.g under 5 miles, 5-10 miles etc.
You will also have the option to opt out.
This is how it works on other sites. I assume the Fab one will be similar |

Excel myself ! I just managed to unmystify the technicalities of gps in only a couple of paragraphs and convert it to easy reading |
