You can build one for much less than a decent off the shelf machine if you have the knowledge and skills to do so safely. Or just buy one and enjoy it straight away. Another option would be renting one to see if they are for you.

There is a variable pitch on the fly one at a stidio I use in Bristol and I have a nice portable one I have made a few over the years
