Was a Datsun 160J, it used to break down about five times a year.
This was 360 days fewer than the Hillman Avenger it replaced
What was your dad's best car? |

I really don’t want to go there, my dad worked at “The Austin” so took full advantage of their employee car plans. We had a stream of Allegros, Maxis, Marinas and Princesses.

My old man was a bit of a petrol head. Guess I got that from him but hopefully that's where the simultaneous end. He was a cunt in every sense of the world but off the top of my head Vauxhall victor and viva Maggie miners and travelers. Beetles car and campers. Some fucking mad thing sure it was a Vauxhall but can't remember its name it had big bench seats in it god what was that called.... |

My stepmum had a 1979 Datsun Sunny 140Y which I inherited when she upgraded her car in 1989. Brilliant, but unfortunately underpowered, comfortable, reliable, economical. It's major flaw was it rusted away by 1991, it lasted 22 years.
Dad's best car was a 2 litre Ford Corrina mkIII estate.
I currently have 1974 SIII Land Rover. |

"My dad had a TR7 and as it only had 2 seats I (her) had to sit on the floor (aged 7) in between my mum's feet!
Those were the days.... "
Great memories, great car.
My dad's mate had a convertible TR7, he had to be permanently followed by an AA man |

A Triumph Herald, which was a truly lovely car, but direly slow.
He did briefly have a 300SL Gullwing in the 60s but sold it after the first service came to £300 odd. He had bought it at probate from a cousins estate and actually turned a net £200 profit so felt very pleased with himself |

The first one I remember was a Rover P90 back in the 60's, then a Triumph 2000E, a Ford Cortina 1600 XL, a Datsun 1200 which just rusted away, but was the only car he bought brand new in 1972 and only broke down once (head gasket), then a Datsun Sunny 150Y. |

In the early 70's, my Dad got a new job, but it didn't have a Company Car as part of the role.
Looking around at what he could afford, he was recommended by a mechanic in the family, to a new car name, just introduced to the UK; they'd a dealer 25 miles away so we went for a look.
That day, we bought a brand new Moskvich; made in Russia, tough as boots but remodified in UK to meet rules then.
Supplied with a full tank of fuel, a 30pce tool kit, a year's Insurance and a Soviet interpreted Owners Handbook (we would have understood the Russian version better) it was on the road for £900. We had the 2nd one in Scotland.
In a week, a selector pin failed in the gearbox, so we had 3 gears only. The Russian makers were so embarrassed, they shipped over a new gearbox in 4 days. The AA came to tow our car but it was too heavy to pull! Finally, they got it onto a truck and over to the dealer.
In snowy conditions, it started first turn of the key; heater and demist unit were on industrial scale.
We had the car 2 years; we were stopped by more police than other motorists as Moskvich's were so rare, officers wanted to look them all over. |

I passed my test in 1978.
During the 2 years that were left I owned:
Cortina Mk2
1970 Escort Mexico
Rover 2000TC
Not to mention half a dozen bikes. |

My dad was in the motor trade, so had a number of cars including a Cortina Estate, a couple of brand new Volvo's, a snot green Marina.
The best one was a 2 door Range Rover which I had into the 90s, wish I hadn't got rid of it and a Bedford J Type break down truck. |
