They practice at different airports all the time. It is to train crews in different scenarios and as civil airports aren't busy right now it gives them opportunities to try new places.

C130Js have also landed at London city airport this week. It is routine to practise landing at civillian airports as a continual training routine. This will also be prudent in major crisis areas where expediency is a factor to airlift manpower and equipment in and out. Remember they airlifted ebola victims, it is not a new thing for them.

It was reported on regional news earlier this week that the nearby NEC could be used as a Field Hospital should the need arise.

Also, Birmingham airport has been designated as a potential Morgue, in which to store overflow dead Coronavirus victims when hospital space runs out.

To add to previous posts too, the RAF have been doing training flights into regional airports in case there's a need to assist distribution networks to supply essential items.

that one i can answer with my "east end" knowledge...

Basically London City Airport is just across the other side of the docks from the Excel centre, so they were using it to get the equipment in they needed.... just like Birmingham Airport are doing for the NEC....

"Training and strategic placement to assist with taking seriously ill people to hospital "

Agreed it will depend on the type of aircraft ..... im Assuming they are Freight carrying aircraft, as sadly the NEC is a designated Nightinggale Hospital which will be taking COVID patients from all over Uk and Temporary Mass Mortuary and as the Midlands is also large and multi cultural then a lot of victims may need to be repatriated into their own countries ??????????

The military use Robin Hood airport a lot for Touch Down and Take off practice because of the size of runway....it was ex Military Airbase that was used by the large V bombers Vulcans Victors etc fixed Delta wings built in the Midlands and tested at Gaydon, then British Leyland and now JLR test and store i believe ??

I guess one runway looks very much like another at 40000 feet, tbf it's not a million miles from Brize norton or fairford especially if it was his first go
