Where there’s a hit there’s a writ.

There is one between Ed Sheeran and Matt Cardle. Check it out on YouTube

"There's a band called the Axis of Awesome. Look up one of their songs called "4 chord song" "

Yeah but that’s just pointing out that you can play a lot of pop songs using just 4 chords. They’re not actually ripoffs of each other.

Blondie's Atomic and 3 Blind Mice is a favourite.

How about this though: The Damned and Life Goes On sounds like Killing Joke and Eighties which sounds like Nirvana and Come As You Are.

Somebody, I used to know by Gotye and Kimbra sounds just like Baa baa black sheep, once the glockenspiel kicks in

Laura by Bat for Lashes and Rock a bye baby in the tree top, are fairly similar too.

Try unhearing those.

Which to me is a rip off. Just like milli vanilli and C&C music factory. Happy to profit on others talent.

Half the World Away (Oasis) and This Guys in Love with You (Herb Alpert).

Noel Gallagher even wondered why he was never sued!

Yes the Pet shop boys sued a famous personality for libel , won the case and donated the damages to charity.

Cat Stevens wrote the song in 1970. It was on his Tea For The Tillerman album but you’re right about PSB suing a personality. It was Jonathan King. Found this on Wickipedia.....

In 1987, Jonathan King accused Pet Shop Boys of plagiarising the melody of "Wild World" for their UK No. 1 single "It's a Sin". He made the claims in The Sun, for which he wrote a regular column during the 1980s. King also released his own cover version of "Wild World" as a single, using a similar musical arrangement to "It's a Sin", in an effort to demonstrate his claims. This single flopped, while Pet Shop Boys sued King, eventually winning out-of-court damages, which they donated to charity.

Eagles Hotel california.

At the time the band were touring with Jethro tull.. Listen to "when we were young" by tull... Very similar chord progression.. Which in its self isn't systematic of a "rip off".. But it makes you wonder if they at least were influenced by it

There’s a good documentary on iPlayer called ‘how pop songs work’ it’s a ok documentary but there’s a section on artists ‘paying homage’ and ripping off, well worth a watch if you’re not heading out anywhere

Is that the one where they tried to create a pop song using a computer program?

No, it kinda goes through lots of songs and looks at the techniques used to create them, not too heavy on the music theory either
