do you think that the media fuels racism?
Jump to: Newest in thread
Ok in the times newspaper today there is a picture of an Indian man pushing a trolley full of loo roll. Call me pathetic or a snowflake or whatever, but out of all the panic buyers they could have chosen they chose him as an example. So I'm genuinely asking for opinions, does media fuel a them against us mentality? |

Definitely. The only paper I read that doesn't is the Guardian and unfortunately that also has its own intolerances.
However I think the media just latches on to and feeds what are quite ingrained prejudices already in society. |

These days, the Times is often little more than the Sun with bigger words (and fewer tits). It's still pushing the Murdoch agenda, just at a different audience. |

Yes
To be non-racist they should have chosen the majority ethnic group - white. |

What colour was the toilet paper?
Aqua and peach shades have been marginalised since the decline of coloured bathroom suites.
But seriously. I have not seen the paper photograph. Did it specifically say he was Indian? He might have “looked Indian” but how do you know he wasn’t from another ethnic group?
We are diverse society and I’m not aware of panic buying being confined to one ethnic group |

Well I would assume Indian but as I didn't actually read the article I couldn't say without doubt.
No unnecessary stock piling isn't confined to any racial group, that's kind of my point. Just in my gut I can't help feel that this person has been portrayed as some terrible villian, when in Britain I'm sure the majority of stockpilers would be white.

Not the sport, I think this is more of a case because of the persons skin colour it has been taken a a racist picture at the end of the day it does not matter what his skin colour is they are adding to the strain of the people who are struggling his skin does not change that what if they were Chinese ? |

Meghan especially, she is the key to the racism debate right now.
However just one bloke pushing a trolley isnt exactly racism |

Racism is totally ingrained into the media and society, we almost don’t notice it. Does anybody notice in football commentary they often say things like “strong criticism from the Spurs Portuguese manager “ we all know what country he’s from, but they don’t say a country when it’s an English manager, it’s subliminal but it adds up.
Anyone who has racist thoughts should just think how they would feel if the situation was reversed? |

Yes, the media does very little to actually keep things calm and level. It's all about outrage and high impact attention grabbing.
However in the example you give it is finding racism because you want to see it. Is the man in the picture just an ordinary person doing what others are doing regardless of race? To exclude using his picture is racism in itself because he is being excluded due to his race. |

There is positive bias. Using a photo of a white guy could be used on the basis of being non-inflammatory. |

Yes they could have done that, and nobody would have thought twice. Which is still very much racism. Positive bias does not change that.
The very fact that the notion of this man's picture being used brings up thoughts of racism is the issue. I'm not saying they shouldn't or couldn't have used a picture of a white person, but they chose that picture and people are choosing to see it as racism (regardless of the original intent) instead of it just seeing it being a man. |

The term hate mail is derived from the Daily Mail. Personally I feel the press (when I say press I mean the news paper press) will vilify anyone to sell their rag.
I have not bought a paper for years as I can get the spots results etc from the bbc sports website or any number of sports websites.
But to answer OPs post yes they are racist, along with sexist, homophobic, and will jump on any band wagon to sell there rubbish.

As an Indian myself, I am not concerned about showing the picture of an Indian guy doing such a thing, as long as it is true. There are plenty of newspapers showing black, white or middle eastern people doing it too.
What I am concerned about is different. As an Indian, I am proud of using water/bidet over toilet roll. Using a bidet is an amazing experience and many levels above using paper. What made him switch from that to using toilet papers? I definitely want to discuss this with him. |

In the context of your post, I’d say no. The country is so Multicultural that an Indian man isn’t exactly a rarity. However, I do believe the Media pushes numerous agendas and Racism is inevitably one of them at times. |

I'd say most if not all of us are racist, sexist and other *ists. Some may not have been pushed far enough to have expressed it, but it's there in everyone of us I think. To say we're not is only to say I've yet to be pushed far enough. Some have it closer to the surface than others. |

Totally agree with this. Perfect response.
Asian, black, Polish, whatever - all so much the fabric of British society that an 'ethnic' doing what hoards of others are doing can"t be racist.
However, if it was pushing a particular stereotype then that would be different.

I do not disagree, we all have said or done things that are not politically correct.
I was asked this question in an interview were i said I’m not prejudiced in anyway, the interviewer replied what about pedophiles? I was then stuck for an answer. |

The fact it's raised may indicate a surpressed level of racism.
About the bidet, you're completely correct and it is a far more hygienic method for a few reasons.
I have struggled with the whole process at times while in India when copious amounts of water are also used to wash down everything when there is clearly a water drought. Understanding a bit more of the culture and religious practices allowed me to see the relationship between certain practices and the aspect of being unclean.
Loo roll is also a cultural thing and maybe he is 2nd,third or 4th generation here and has adapted. When I'm in India I do as the Indian in most ways. |

Though it may do. |

"Ok in the times newspaper today there is a picture of an Indian man pushing a trolley full of loo roll. Call me pathetic or a snowflake or whatever, but out of all the panic buyers they could have chosen they chose him as an example. So I'm genuinely asking for opinions, does media fuel a them against us mentality?"
I hope for his sake it wasn't the "John Wayne" brand of toilet paper. That stuff is white, very very tough and takes no shit from Indians. |

"'Everyone Is Getting Along Fine, And Nothing Bad Happened Today'.....is not much of a headline, so if there isn't any controversial, inflammatory news they have have to generate it. "
You don't know the headline. |

"Would you be OK with the picture being of someone white? "
Was it white toilet paper? I haven't seen the photo. Presume it's hard to say as it's in black and white. |

"Definitely. The only paper I read that doesn't is the Guardian and unfortunately that also has its own intolerances.
However I think the media just latches on to and feeds what are quite ingrained prejudices already in society."
You mean the paper which published that Priti Patel? One can argue that the cartoon was not supposed to mean her Hindu heritage. By the same argument, a picture of an Indian guy buying toilet rolls can also be considered non-racist. Guardian is just like any other newspaper. It has its target audience and panders to them. It has its own list of who it can hurt and who it cannot. |

There's probably racism in everything, everywhere. Sometimes you really have to dig deep, or chase some very tenuous connections to find the racism, but there always seem to be hobbyists who enjoy the chase. |

Was it the Daily Mail?
No the times actually.
These days, the Times is often little more than the Sun with bigger words (and fewer tits). It's still pushing the Murdoch agenda, just at a different audience."
Just like Private Eye and Viz. All done without Murdoch at the helm. |

Snow flakes moan that FRIENDS is racist, cos there ain't no black person, no, not one: but suddenly go quiet when you ask them to name a white person in THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIR.
Funny that: selective memory.

Wow melt down post
What a snowflake
In answer to the OP
I think the hate mail fans racist flames
I dont think the times examples were explicit more misjudged knowing how twisted a racist mind can be
And indeed racism subtle and explicit are practiced by the petty minds of all races
I think noting remembering a d understanding racism from previous generations is important context when trying to counter balance a tribes racism tribe here I mean English Scottish white black arsenal villa
Not a small African tribe

Well it doesn’t help in these uncertain times. Unfortunately most people don’t think before they speak and what the implications they calls |

How do you know he was Indian?he was smoking a peace pipe........ how
That's very funny im sure. But seriously, how did the OP know that the gentleman was Indian?
He was probably darker skinned and agree he could have come from any number of countries but was probably as British as anyone else
Exactly. Yet the OP assumes everyone else is casually racist. just as guilty. "
Probably meant Asian. |

You saw an Indian man. Some may have seen just a man pushing the trolley. Some may have seen a fat man , some a thin man, some a disabled man. You see and interpret what you want to. Only saying. |

To me, racism feeds racism which appears to be a facet in any race.
If you think the uk is badly racist you need to travel more.
However, I believe media is a conduit for both positive and counter passive/aggressive racism, neither pretty. |

In absolutely everything, all the editors are interested in is selling papers, as their saying goes "never let the facts get in the way of a good story!" |

I guess there's many ways of looking at it.
Personally an asian/afro carribean/chinese person etc etc etc is a member of the public and society. Not everyone notices race in order to categorize them? |

Yes. Our media including the Express, Mail, Sun -Times Telegraph, have had significant racist tropes and propaganda for many years, also known for how they have pushed the UK to leave the EU. Johnson has written many racist pieces, helping to foster intolerance for many minorities, including his letterbox and other sinister moves to stir up disquiet and intolerance and much of the referendum anti-immigrant rhetoric quickly had violence against many lovely people. There's an enduring nasty streak that runs through many with power here who seek to help themselves at the cost of others, with citizens being the eager puppets |

yes sometimes.
look at raheem sterling. talented football player but as soon as he has a bad game the press try to destroy him.
he called it out and rightly so. same with lewis Hamilton, senna or Mansell wouldn't of got such a roasting.
would they still get away with using terms like 'linfords lunchbox'?
possibly. but remember these nasty creepy people in the press were hacking into peoples voicemails and using that information to get gay celbs and others into coming out before they read it in the papers.
gary speed hung himself because the press were going to publish a story in a sunday paper.
they are mostly scum, backstabbing lowlifes that look for any chance to kick someone down who is doing well.
and if he is black increase that by 100%.
