Anyone seen the videos on YouTube of the markets in China where the virus is thought to of originated from?
Cats, dogs, bats, snakes, toads, rats and more are all on the menu.

Because that’s the norm in their society. It’s as alien to me as it is to you but we are looking at it from the outside. If they know no other then that is their normality. |

Yes, I've seen them
I've also seen the censured videos of the town during the quarantines and police brutality. Now that seems to be coming over here.
However, I believe the virus originated in a Wuhan lab, not the market.

I haven't got a problem with people eating weird food but having live, raw and cooked animals all on the same stall isn't good.
I have also seen a video of an oriental guy ripping the head of a live rat with his teeth and then eating it and one of a woman eating her way through the stomach of a live chicken...
That is how things like this get from animals to humans.
Eat what you like but do it in a humane and hygienic way... |

I don't know, of course. But I suspect it did. Apparently there's a lab over there where they carry some research on that type of things.
The last thing I head it that the virus has snake and bat DNA. I can't verify that information, but I heard that.
It's possible to watch some videos on bitchute or Lbry that are censured on other platforms. |

I’ve seen various videos of those market places and it can’t be very hygienic to have people (members of the public) walking through there in flip flops walking through pools of blood on the floor.
The pythons and the cats upset me, huge pythons being chopped up and cats being picked up by the scruff and blow torched to death.
Very cruel. |

Its less about the meat that is used, but the conditions and manner in which the meat is kept and prepared. Tradition or not, regardless of what is being sold and served, if any western food establishment be it 5 star or weekend catering van, there is no way you would want to eat anything from there if it had even a fraction of the health and hygiene violations these blood bath markets have. |

Tell that to the 35 families who have lost someone to the virus in the UK.
Or how about the 1400+ families in Italy?

There are/have been 3 cases in our postcode area. This covers over 285,000 people, the largest town in England plus a bit of the adjoining town. The first patient was infected on Italy weeks ago and my understanding is that the other two are family members. All of them were isolated immediately and they should have recovered or be damned close.
Yet, despite that stat (easy to find for your postcode), the supermarkets are bare, can't book a home food delivery (normal size) for a week and the world is going hell in a handcart. It's insane. |

People are right to be worried, as the fatality rates in Italy, the rate of infection, the disruption to normal life and the economic uncertainty will testify.
However the situation in the supermarkets isn't because of rational thought. Terminally stupid people exist in all walks of life. When people get worried they look for something they can do to ease their worries that they think may improve their situation, it's human nature. A lot of us will look into detailed accounts, theories, patterns and probabilities to educate themselves further on this new threat, believing they stand a better chance if they know their enemy.
But terminally stupid people lack the brain power or concentration to be able to do any of this and it makes their heads hurt ever so much. So they do what they are just about capable of to ease their feeling helpless and go into an Asda and buy 48 toilet rolls.

The extreme of "end of the world, buy everything" is dangerous.
The extreme of "it's scaremongering. Nothing to worry about" is also dangerous.
It's still serious, and should be taken as such. Neither extreme viewpoint is right or safe. |

As far as the market is concerned. A wet market, is in itself not dangerous for cross contamination; it’s the people not practising correct hygiene that causes problems.
Wet markets can be wonderful places to pick up fresh meat, fish. I know ones I visit in Malaysia. I also know one I avoid because of the hygiene factor.
How many people here do not wash their hands after handing raw meat? How many don’t wash their hands after using a toilet?
It’s people who cause these things to happen and those same selfish, ignorant people exist in as much proportion here as in China or any other country. |

If the legs and wing are not made from metal wood or plastic, “ they will eat it “.
They are called wet markets because of the flowing blood from live animals being slaughtered there and then as the Chinese want their meet fresh as possible.

Is part of some posters’ clear revulsion by the thought of a wet market because they get their chicken in a plastic tray with cling film over it?
Try visiting an abattoir. The name shambles was originally used for the mess from a slaughterhouse or butchers.
Wet markets, if correct hygiene is observed, are no different.
Like a previous poster mentioned, a few years ago, a large number of us ate horse meat and were oblivious to it. Here’s another fact, we as humans cottoned onto the advantage of riding horses, long after we had simply seen them as a source of meat. |

1.It first appeared in December 2019 when 40 people tested positive. All were linked to the wet market
2.They have already pinpointed exactly when it made the jump from animals to humans - the 3rd week of November 2019
3.They believe it very likely came from either Bats or Pangolins
4. It's also likely it will get worse before it gets better and it will not be over in just a few weeks |

They don't resort to eating 'meat like that'.....
It's the meat that lives there.
We ate such foods at one time.

As I said in reply the other day...
You are underestimating the pure destructive force that is nature, evolution and viral mutations. That's what a virus does. There have been many viruses like this in the past that have spread just as quickly in terms of how contagious they are, if not even more contagious. Air travel has just made it even easier for it the spread across the globe instead of limited to a town, city, or country.
Could it potentially have been modified by humans in an attempt to create a bio weapon? Yes, there is potential for a lot of things.
But it's ability to spread as it has is a pretty weak ass basis for that assumption based on the things that nature has created in the past. |

There is no difference I agree but it is wrong to not maintain a certain standard of hygiene, so much so that the place you buy your food from is basically one giant petri dish. It was an accident waiting to happen |

It is in no way a government conspiracy. Scientists have been warning about this for years and it was an accident just waiting to happen

If you had asked the average Brit 30 years ago, to spend a tenner on three pieces of raw fish wrapped in sea; there would be no takers.
I’m not saying we are going to be eating cats over here in years to come (even if I do keep threatening my darling cat that, if he doesn’t stop stealing my cheese, I’ll have him for next Christmas dinner) All I’m saying, is that we need to acknowledge cultural differences. We shouldn’t be using that as a stick to beat others with.
What we should be doing, is taking this chance to improve our level of hygiene everywhere; from wet markets to staff toilets.

It's all well and good accepting cultural differences but when they cause a pandemic, how accepting do we have to be? |

Like this
They shoot wild things these wild things (birds) travel the world and it's as plausible for birds and wildlife to have any virus that exists anywhere in the world
They then touch said wildlife viral species jumping is equally plausible from bird hunting
Also Myxomatosis
From wiki
is a disease caused by Myxoma virus, a poxvirus in the genus Leporipoxvirus. The natural hosts are tapeti (Sylvilagus brasiliensis) in South and Central America, and brush rabbits (Sylvilagus bachmani) in North America. The myxoma virus causes only a mild disease in these species, but causes a severe and usually fatal disease in European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). Myxomatosis is an excellent example of what occurs when a virus jumps from a species adapted to it to a naive host, and has been extensively studied for this reason. The virus was intentionally introduced in Australia, France, and Chile in the 1950s to control wild European rabbit populations.
UK rabbits can have it
There is no reason it could not jump to humans although doubtful but that could be said of the Chinese virus
I suggest some are a bit quick to condemn others ( possibly rightly) without also looking inward or do we forget bse
Relevant enough for you ?

We are right to say anything is wrong which spreads a disease.
This is not the first time that this happened and has long as the world doesn't come down hard on China to outlaw it, its inevitable that more diseases will originate from these markets around the world.
Maybe something even more serious which could whipe us all out. |

The problem isn't where it started it's why it traveled around the world?
Tourism/business trips and illegal migration and smuggling. Yes tourism is a neccesary evil but look how it's been underestimated. Cruise ships a lovely idea for the holidaymaker but not such a good idea in terms of pandemics.
The smuggling one should be a top target. Animals, food, drink, cosmetics and of course drugs/humans. These all have the potential to be highly contaminated and enter countries without safety checks.
The lady who died from Novichok poisoning, that was in a perfume bottle.
Not related to the current crisis but look how easily an innocent third party got affected.
The goverment needs to get it's act together. The honeymoons over they need to get back to reality.
We pay road tax, more revenue than ever but the roads are still a mess.
We pay income tax revenue from a 24/7 working culture but there isn't enough hospitals or ventilators for a crisis.

Fascinating thread, just finished the whole thing.
I can't understand how some don't see a distinction beetwen the way animals are consumed in the western world and street markets in China. Is it in some way racist to criticise them??
It's glaringly obvious that the types and more specifically the mode of consumption of these animals is far more conducive to initiating disease than the way we consume animals. |

The first ones that got infected were unaware, now we are in the second stage when it's mostly idiots that get infected, further in the future it will be anyone because it'll be very spread out.
Today I met the mother of an infected person, they live in the same household and a co-worker spent a few minutes speaking to her. She was feeling curious and seem to find it interesting. You see, she's one of the idiots. I see more with those aptitudes reading the status of people on this site.

The only thing strange considering what people in the UK eat is pigs. Reason pigs aren't considered food in a lot of countries due to the fact it will eat anything including carrion.
Rule of thumb don't eat carnivores due to the extensive parasites and contaminants from eating other animals.
People still eat beef even though there's tapeworm eggs in the meat. But it's a herbivore.
China eat practically everything including wild bush meat which has had no treatment which means everything the animal is infected with or contaminated with is ingested. China was warned previously about the bat corona virus jumping to humans with someone infected before. It was just a matter of time it mutated. Il refer to another of the threads I pointed out some of the 18 other coronavirus carrying species of which humans eat including the UK. |

I've also seen the censured videos of the town during the quarantines and police brutality. Now that seems to be coming over here.
However, I believe the virus originated in a Wuhan lab, not the market.

Yup, police being given powers to detain if they suspect you have it. Something much bigger going on here. |

I stood and watched goats being slaughtered and butchered in the middle of the high street in Tangiers, the stench is unreal
The problem is simply over population of humans |

"So many cultures eat different creatures than the western world, so what. It’s how they live and have done for centuries. Who are we to say it’s wrong !
We are right to say anything is wrong which spreads a disease.
This is not the first time that this happened and has long as the world doesn't come down hard on China to outlaw it, its inevitable that more diseases will originate from these markets around the world.
Maybe something even more serious which could whipe us all out.
If that’s your thinking then ban any human from eating animals, as you may think that’s the only way viruses go from animals to humans
I don't think that. Just look at a few videos of these markets and see how you feel then.
Different species pilled up on top of each other alive in cages untill someone chooses one and its then pulled out by the neck then killed and quartered.
People in flip flops walking through pools of blood. Dogs, cats and whatever else they can get their hands on getting fried in the open.
Its no wonder the virus jumped from animals to humans.
It is their way of life like in so many counties around the world. Who are we to tell them to stop how they live ! "
Oh we can't tell them how to live. But we can present them with an overall bill for the rough amount that the coronavirus has cost the rest of the countries in the world combined, including the certain to follow recession... I think if they had to dig deep to pay off THAT then they may be a tad more hygienic in future....

Not sure the creation of Corona had much to do with personal hygiene. |

Having seen footage from these Chinese " markets " I can say with a degree of confidence that this wont be the last virus emanating from that part of the world .
I watched live Toads being boiled and placed in a broth of some kind , I cant even describe what it looked like .
Casually watching was a young lady eating live scorpions off a wooden skewer .
And a group of men standing around whilst a live dog was being booked alive , yelping in pain .
Dont give me this shite about us eating cows and pigs and shit .
They are specifically bred for this and ( in the most part , apart from the disgraceful halal method) killed humanely , not thrown live into a vat of boiling water when an hour earlier they were happily scurrying around in the wild .
These certain practices should be outlawed, and China should be held accountable for this worldwide madness .
But it wont |

I don't care what you eat. Relating to pigs did you know they carry 4 strains of coronavirus? Easily happen a swine strain mutating just as easily as the bat one.
How it's cooked has nothing to do with it. People consuming bats when even warned about the virus crossing species people carried on eating them. They ignored the warnings of a human mutation of the bat strain. Feel free to read up on all the strains of the corona viruses you'll find most carriers you already consume. 3 zoonotic human mutations so far. |

And steps are taken to ensure this doesnt get to humans , yes occasionally, once in a blue moon accidents happen .
What doesnt happen though is wild animals are scooped up from their habitat , and chucked into a pot of boiling water and served as a fucking starter !!
If I served you up two small plates , one with a Pork Chop , and one with a boiled Bat , dont tell me you would chow down on Batfink !! |

Different strokes for different folks some of our foods probably seem weird to them. You're living a sanitised life away from the animals you eat. They don't have that luxury |

Your not getting it , it's about the cooking methods and hygienic practices. Here, nobody throws a live rabbit into boiling water whilst people are walking through blood soaked markets , touching the animals and alike ( I've seen it ) .
And by the way , I am a butcher so I know what I'm talking about .
I've nothing against vegetarians whatsoever . I do get what you are saying , but I'm afraid China needs to be held accountable, I'm aware not all Chinese people dine this way , but it happened in their country , so they are accountable |

If a calf can drink it safely I assume is what they thought.
The world was saved from smallpox thanks to milking maids. |

Animal milk is estimated to have been used for 8000 to 10000 years. It wasn't originally d*unk fresh but used for yogurt, cheese and curds. |

We're going to save a bomb on pensions all going to say
What an awful attitude.
Ment the attitude of the government not mine ffs"
How is that the attitude of the government? If the government had no interest in saving lives they would just say for everyone to carry on as normal. That way, the vast majority of people who are of working age and contributing to the economy would carry on working having had only mild symptoms, and a large amount claiming state pensions wouldn't survive.
What they are actually doing is trying to stop the spread and save those lives. People complain about the schools staying open but if they close most parents still have to work meaning grandparents become childminders which puts them at more risk!
Its honestly laughable how people will jump on anything to attack the government. People need to remember that irrespective of who they voted for, we are always left with the government the majority wanted. Nobody on this site or forum has the advice/information they have available to them so how about, for once, people just pull together and show a little support. |

Oh things like pension, benefits, and reducing the long term users on the NHS WILL have been discussed and used as a pro in their decision making. It is niave to think that such a thing would not have crossed the minds of those in control. It is the type of things governments and businesses have to do, what benefits in any given situation. As cold hearted as it is, they would be foolish to not consider the possibility of taking advantage of it in their position. |
