So .... Hollande was victorious. The French people voted for him as a vote against Sarkozy - a vote against austerity.
Hollande promised there would be jobs and salaries. He is anti - austerity.
It seems the Greeks are voting the same way too. The trend seems to be against the 'For Austerity' parties and for the 'Against Austerity' parties.
Help me......
If....there is no money to promote growth, if the High Street is dying on it's arse due to technology and transport, if capitalism is in the throes of death ....
Where is the money coming from to create jobs and decent salaries ?
It's like a down and out promising me gold for Christmas. |

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum |
Less investment overseas. We have the same problem - sending £10billion to developing nations, yet we had a double dip recesssion in the first quarter.
As much as I am for helping struggling economies, I'd rather help ours first. |

When faced with harsship a lot of people like to bury their heads in the sand and hope it goes away - or afflicts someone else.
I suppose the Greeks feel that it couldn't get any worse so let's have someone else in power who says nice things for a change, but it doesn't change the underlying situation that Greece is Broke.
France are in nowhere near the same boat as Greece but to them I guess it feels like they are feeling the pinch and don't like it anymore than the Greeks. We'll probably feel the same way in a year or two but by then we'll be in the run in to the 2015 Election and you can bet your last pound that Ozzy will be giving lots of lovely tax breaks away. |

A double-dip caused by a blip in the construction industry that has always had a blip in the first three months after Christmas. The weather is foul at that time and men can't work in such conditions. Even the Olympic Stadium shut down for three weeks in Jan 2010 due to bad weather and their funding was already secured.
It helps the Govt to have a really small dip that is easily reversed by the pure nature of things and lo and behold they have some nice good news in July when the Summer is here and everyone is feeling a warmy glow. |

I agree Wishy but it doesn't answer my question.
Sarkozy accepted responsibility for the defeat citing that ( im paraphrasing ) he had told truths and let the people know how it was etc e.g a belt tightening time.
Are the people of France so stupid to vote for the mummy that promises the biggest ice cream even tho her purse is empty .....
I don't get where the money is coming from!
As soon as I saw it happening I thought .... Yeah there will be jobs and salaries but they will be long hours and low pay and high taxes.....
People are voting themselves into a slavery of sorts.

You've answered it yourself Granny. They'll pay themselves salaries and not care where the money is coming from so long as they feel good about themselves. Brown wanted to do the same thing here and he honestly believed the only way to ride out/stave off a recession was to keep spending as though the financial alarm bells were not ringing.
Luckily, we voted him out and voted in a govt prepared to tackle it head on, and now we're hearing that many councils are reporting that the effect of the cuts are not as hard hitting as thye thought it was going to be. |

a lot of the projects may well be infrusture ones....those that were scheduled for the future may well be brought forward... sure as building and maintaining roads/railways/bridges/power stations ect... the reasoning being it will keep french people in jobs and spending, as opposed to claiming from the state and people being fearful which then has implication for high streets.... and thus keep the economy ticking over until it naturally gets itself out of recession....
is that the type of answer you were after granny....
basically it is the same type of thing obama is doing it in the US..... whereas the way we are doing it in europe is very different.... |

The French will tax the rich, sell off government assets and inflict more fines or British tourists driving through France. |

World's upside down.

To be fair. Me too. I have been drawing parallels with the 30's for years now.

So your answer is to asset-strip the wealthy everytime there's a crisis and realign the wealth to start a new cycle of avarice and greed but with a different set of people holding onto most of the cash.
I'd be inclined to move my billions to a nice little tax haven (if I hadn't already) to keep it safe from grubby paws that wanted to take it away from me without any justification apart from "well, we want it and you have it, so we're taking it." |

LOL, Wishy you always assume you know me , lol, hell i dont even know me , now please read again who i was saying have realised ( the voters in France and Greece ) i know that we aint got any money in the Guv coffers left for us all to have what services we require , yes more border staff would be great ,But , they aint gonna pat them to sit about waiting for planes to be late , so we are going to have to queue , not just at airports , but hospitals ,tax officers , and all council services that they dont close ....SIMPLES .. |

the theory in being that the govt can either pay people to work and if effect have some sort of purpose for it..plus pay people which brings in taxes...plus then people spending in shops, which keeps those people in jobs.... or pay people in benefits for effectively staying at home... which causes a negative spiral
it is trickle down economics....
dangerous but interesting theory.... |

The French are expected to be announcing a major house building push over the coming months, aimed primarily at low cost rental.
It would create hundreds of thousands of jobs, both in the building industry and also related industries.
Might be something Cameron and Co. would learn from.... |

The dangerous flaw in trickle dow neconomics is that it only takes one of the steps to fail and the whole house of cards comes tumbling down.
In the instance Fabio outlined above, which I've often seen repeated, is that it assumes that people with jobs will spend what they earn. If that was the case, there are more people employed than unemployed but they are not spending because they are scared shitless they won't have any money left in the kitty if they lose their income.
Plus, if you've been unemployed for a while the chances are you've racked up a pile of debt, or fallen behind on mortgage/rent payments and any new income will have to spent of servicing that debt before you can rush out any buy a new plasma TV. Or you can simply be so scared of being skint the next time you're out of work that you decide to save for it rather than spend now. |

Which is great... So you put some savings behind you for the proverbial rainy day... No interest on your savings... Then lose your job... Now you cant sign on... Coz you have savings...
Or is it me...? |

Signing on is no great shakes these days. If you happen to have a spouse who's working you get JSA for 180 days and then that's it. Nothing.

It's going to be very interesting to see how France and the rest of Europe move forward. Hollande has clearly been voted in on an 'end to austerity' mandate, in my opinion unlike some previous posts I don't believe he is pushing the idea of 'trickle down' economics.
He obviously believes that a recovery driven solution to the sovereign debt crisis is the way forward as opposed to austerity and clearly intends to embark on a tax, borrow and spend drive to reinvigorate the economy. It's a dangerous game, but if it works other countries will follow.
Be under no illusion, massive government investment in infrastructure will always invigorate an economy, but I don't see how they can pull it off without further borrowing. Germany simply won't accept that.
It's going to be an interesting few months. |
