Does anybody have any ?
Have had a stinking cold for over a week now that's showing no sign of going
Tried all the over the counter remedies but nothing is even making me feel any better at all
Show willing to try anything now |

I load with zinc and vitamin, including lots of vitamin c loaded fruit. Paracetamol is good too, and if I've got specific symptoms that are bothersome, I'll treat those with a targeted med or other. Rarely get colds, so I'll be steering clear of Stafford. Good luck! |

For a really heavy cold..
Drink as much water as possible
Go for a long run or walk
Hot shower or bath
Cup of honey and lemon made with real honey and lemon not powdered crap..
Couple of Paracetamol..
Bed....
Alternatively...
A hot curry, hot bath, glass of Brandy...Bed.
The first one has never failed me..the second one is more fun! |

Zinc has got study trial proven results, so I'd recommend it, as most of the other treatments above.
'Taking zinc syrup, tablets or lozenges can lessen the severity and duration of the common cold, experts believe.
A review of the available scientific evidence suggests taking zinc within a day of the onset of cold symptoms speeds recovery.
At seven days, more of the patients who took zinc remedies every couple of hours during the daytime had cleared their symptoms compared to those who took placebos.' BBC |

I don't know your symptoms or what stage you are at.
There is no cure for a cold. No remedies.
You have to ride it out.
If you are run down take the above advice and take vitamins but take them for months not just while you have a cold. Resiliance should be built up.
Rest. Get sleep where ever possible. It promotes recovery.
Drink water/tea/coffee/lemonade - NEVER alcohol. Liquid flushes the body.
Take paracetamol for pain and lowering temperature. Don't buy any patent medicines they are only paracetamol.
If you are bunged up use...........
Weak Saline Solution. Snort it up the nostrils and let it run down the throat and gargle with it. Prevents bacterial growth.
Get fresh air by walking for fifteen mintues and then rest.

Don't take any whiskey or brandy or toddie advice.
They taste lovely. They warm on the way down. They WILL make you feel comfortable , especially when going to bed BUT.......they cause dehydration and prevent recovery.
So only ONE at bed time.
Just drink plenty of fluid. Not booze |

A GP mate of mine said that the cold lasts about 7 to 9 days whatever you take , do or dont take or not do...
However, some people feel better for the odd whiskey with lemon juice topped up with water. I d agree with Granny that it only makes you feel better momentarily, perhaps sleep better as well but it does dehydrate. |

My gran used to say:
Take an apple...
Cut into 8 pieces...
Eat one piece per day and when the apple is all gone... So will the cold...;-) |

I find usualy the most uncomfortable part of a cold is the being unable to breath and that causing horrible headaches. I just cram myself full of the strongest decongestant ...Sudafed usually and that makes the rest bearable till it passes.

"Whisky and a Beechams hot lemon works wonders "
For undertakers!
Don't buy hot lemons. It's paracetamol with sugar in it.
Just buy paracetamol and take a hot drink with it ...
I love making my own lemon drink from lemons but only cos it's pychological. From my childhood. |

lemon, honey and ginger with hot water and two paracetamol does it for me - the ginger helps clear the nose - you can get cordials in the supermarkets now with ginger and lemon if you can't be bothered using the real stuff but I add the eucalyptus honey cos it's psychological.
Hope you get better soon and yes, drink plenty of fluids (hot toddy only before going to bed), a short brisk walk and plenty of rest. Don't sit in a heavily heated room as this seems to aggravate the sinuses. |
