I can't decide if Essex Tom is for real but he reminds me of the high pitched confused Harry Enfield character.

I think he just watches and reads too much mainstream media and then makes the mistake of only reading up on Facebook articles that feed the hysteria. Fact is that a lot of what hes saying is right or given time will come to fruition but hes going on about it like people are just collapsing in the streets as we speak. By the time corona reaches crisis point we will probably have found a vaccine/treatment for it.

Ok just to clarify my position, yes this is serious but as stated above about British humour in the face of adversity etc...

As it happens my job potentially puts me in direct contact with the virus (the amount of extra precautions I have to take now is mind boggling, but necessary), we currently have 2 members of staff self isolating for 2 weeks due to not being informed on customer premises that they would be handling materials contaminated with the virus, it was only once they'd finished the job that they were informed

by all means worry about it (I do) and please take any precautions necessary to protect yourself and your loved ones, but surely we can still poke fun a little bit right?

That to me means we have a lot more people affected and its just the beginning. It will snowball and this could go on for months... Only after that you can camparenit to the flue.

But I'm not worried about myself, I worry for older people who will get taken before their time it up.

I dont believe there is such a thing as being taken before your time, I'm a firm believer that we are all conceived with an expiration date, the method of our demise could be anything but when it's your time it's your time regardless of what you do to prevent it. But that's just what I have to believe to get through each day otherwise I would break.

I have just gone to the WHO page re COVID 19. This page states about the outbreak (where and when) and informs us to check daily. The newest update has the director General calling the virus an epidemic NOT pandemic.

The WHO have recently dropped their own definition of Pandemic. They now have no definition.

I agree, the UK average population is 60 million, approx 1000 cases so far, most of which will make a full recovery. Whilst this isn't a flu virus it has some similar symptoms. People are terrified because of media. MERS, SARS, Ebola, Swine flu, bird flu... All still knocking about why have we stopped shittng ourselves over these that are much worse than Covid-19??

This sums it up. Though the focus on covid is due to its extremely high infectious rate, and how easy it is to pass on, which is what people are missing the point on generally.

Yes it can kill select people in certain cercumstance, yes that is a shame and something to feel for, but the focus is on the death rate (especially when ignoring the recovery rate) far too much and not on the fact of how contagious it is. The main concern (by officials) is more to do with how many people have it at the same time, and not its death rate.

They’ve had 2 confirmed cases in my town - returning holidaymakers who caught it in Italy. If my mum gets it she’s a gonner - but we all know not to go near her if we have a cough/cold/sore throat anyway.

A few people are running around like headless chickens - just about everywhere has sold out of antibacterial hand gel - but other than that it’s business as usual!

Currently counting unread books and unwatched box sets in case I ‘have’ to self isolate!

Had a meeting at work (retail) in which a co worker asked if she could refuse to serve ‘Chinese and Italian looking people’ to reduce the risk of her catching it - I kid you not!

The rest of us are just stockpiling biscuits and chocolate - just in case the extra stone’ll help fight the infection!

Statistics for common flu are far more robust as the dataset is huge. It is also likely that many people will not be diagnosed with COVID-19, as they will have mild symptoms they mistake for common cold/flu. Flu has vaccinations available annually, COVID-19 currently doesn’t.

I’m not saying it’s not more deadly, it likely is significantly so (because it’s novel). My point is that the statistics are extrapolations of relatively small (comparatively) datasets between flu and COVID-19, and that there are many other factors that skew the stats.

- 26 already treated and discharged well

- the rest under treatment and isolated.

- 0 death

- 65 locals (history of traveling or contact with those traveling to China), 15 tourists from China, 3 tourists from other countries (USA, Japan and Italy).
