You don’t have to get it. She isn’t neurotypical. You’ll never “get it”. She’s right, and her crusade isn’t against the regular person, it’s against the powerful people and countries that pollute. She’ll never stop and fair play to her

Greta is 17 going on 12. She looks 12 she sounds 12 or younger.

I applaud her every word. I applaud her every action.

It it results in action or enlightenment then she will have done well.

I detest the way history is written. Books will carry pictures of her saying that the world was in decay until Greta the Great changed it all and made it clean....

Is she totally unaware of climate care that has been taking place for decades?

Are you unaware ?

When I hear her say ..... well you won't change things so we will!

Great Greta..... Go on then. Tell us ...... and show us how you are going to do this.

Her speeches are merely rhetorical tropes.

It is good she takes an interest though.

And in these modern times where everyone thinks with emotion instead of their brain she is reliant on being a child for you to listen to her. She pulls on your heart strings but does little more.

I still think that she is making people aware but what will actually happen because of it remains to be seen.

Politics and Business will hardly be quaking in their boots. They will listen and do enough to appease Gretaists but ffs...... money will continue to please itself.

The problem is people don't like being told they are wrong, or they should or should not do something. Which is why she gets so much hate (unfairly, she is a kid learning her way). It's an irritant, lecturing, trying to shame, shouting down etc is more likely going to rub people the wrong way and push them further from your goal.

They went with a tactic of using a child for manipulation but continued with the aggressive tone.

She offers very little solution. Like a lot of children she keeps whining and stamping but offers no real solution.

She doesn't really pay for anything either ...... so I guess it's okay for her to keep lecturing everybody whilst having no fooking idea of how everyone else keeps body and soul together.

I wonder what Greta World will be like and what there will be for me to do,espeically when I am paying my hard earned back to the businesses that fleeced me of it in the first place.. What a wonderful big wheel we are on.

Not noticed that, no. I mean, personally, if I was speaking to international conferences and global leaders, I think I might want something to fiddle with, or notes close to hand. But I've missed when she did that.

Yes, she had aspergers. Not sure why that makes her a "poor girl" though.

I think you'll find that China and India habe their own protesters, some who directly cite Greta as an inspiration. Yet, let's be honest, if she did go to those countries, it would simply be another reason that some people use to criticise her.

In the UK, if parents take their kids out of school they are frequently fined up to £1,000. Gretel TunaBurger does it every Friday and now she is here inciting and encouraging kids to skip school. Shouldn’t she be arrested for being complicit in mass school absences ?

She's a young person who you may or may not agree with. You so often hear about the youth of today not caring about anything etc, expect everything on their plate. Yet when you get one who is passionate about a cause people shot her down. I may not agree with what she says, or her methods but I value that she cares.

Your rhetoric displays your lack of intelligence. Theres no need to be so defensive I was asking a question if you have no idea what to say you don't have to feel obligated to contribute a reply.

I'm not the face of fighting climate change but I was thinking she could do video conferences instead of using long haul travel that goes against what she preaches.

Ok, I will take back my defensive reply as it seems to have upset you . Yes, she could do a video conference, but I doubt it would have the same impact , we could all cycle and walk to work but first most of us that isn’t practical . She isn’t trying to change the world just make it a more eco friendly place to live . Agree or not I think that is a noble cause

How old are you? Do you often call 16 year old girls names?

She's 17 You guys will have to stop using that blanket soon

Is she, only 1 more year and the haters can really start insulting her

Is there really a minimum age limit for insults in the UK?

Legally? No. Morally? I like to hope so . "

The fact that such things need to devolve in to insults says quite a bit more than anything else. Regardless of age of those involved.

What gets me about this kind of discussion is the tendancy of some to label Greta as a teenage Aspie as though that's some kind of debilitation or handicap.

It's often trotted out as a pejorative label disguised as an expression of sympathy aimed at undermining a viewpoint, most commonly by those who either don't understand what it truly means (as evidenced by the question: "what is NT?") or are intimidated by an intellect greater than their own.

So... as an Aspie myself can I respectfully request you desist and start treating us with a bit more respect?.. after all, when it comes to intellect your average Aspie would be well justified in viewing the average NT with a degree of condescension and sympathy at their debilitating condition.

"Then wht does she not protest in China or India? They are just about the worst polluters.

She's being manipulated by her parents and the climate change lobbyists. Poor girl has Aspergers apparently. "

That is a very oversimplified, and illogical take on the situation. Whilst these countries are more polluting, per capita they are actually doing pretty bloody well. Far far better than we were doing at the same point in our industrial development.

I really hope you are suggesting that we should tell these nations to stay down where they belong? Less developed than us? We, the G7 etc., could certainly help them become cleaner, by giving them more knowledge and expertise in the area, but clearly Greta can't. She needs to talk to the people in the position to CHOOSE to change themselves for the better, not force others of a lower status to stay there.

If you're minded to look at an absolutely amazing book on some of the subtleties around these issues, check out Factfulness by Hans Rosling. A literally life changing book.

Sometimes the talk and the walk influence each other and clearly that's the case here. Going and picking up litter INSTEAD is bloody stupid, and will achieve nothing outside of that street.

So often the message is WAY more important that any specific action. I would far rather she spent a given unit of time encouraging others to do good that do good herself. And there's blatantly some form of cost associated with providing that encouragement, but the ends massively massively justify the means.

To answer the OP. No, she isn't a messiah, she is someone who has got young people caring about their future.

"To answer the OP. No, she isn't a messiah, she is someone who has got young people caring about their future.

I 'be been listening to the radio at lunchtime and was actually embarrassed by the people of my generation criticising her and their attempts to belittle her and the school children who were at the meeting.

"

It's a strange thing visible in a thousand facebook community groups up and down the land. "Bullying is a terrible thing kids, don't ever ever do it or else! Oh, until you leave school, then have at it, it's totally fine then. That's different because I'm the bully now."

Dont believe in violence/physical assault (unless its between consenting adults),especially on children (for she is a child) but that Greta does need a slap, and also whoever is in background operating her puppet strings

OK, so I guess your point is you think we think that anything that receives money to exist is ... bad..? Quite a stretch I'd suggest.

Yes it is, if you want your point to be in any way comorehensible. Otherwise I could easily say something equally obtuse like: "Breast and cervical cancer research is also funded" and leave that hanging as though it had meaning.

"Sometimes the talk and the walk influence each other and clearly that's the case here.

Standard response from an eco-lightweight.

You seem to be a fan of this "snowflake tactic"... using words to state you're undermining whoever you're talking to without actually saying anything meaningful. Try actually stating something relevant rather than pretending you already have."

Ok, I'll try to explain it to you. I don't personally think she's making any significant difference whatsoever. She has a fantastic opportunity to make a difference because of the target audience she draws. In her speech today, not once did she reference anything that children can actually meaningfully do for the planet. Look at the pictures of the event. Look at the amount of the latest cell phones, all made from materials that cause immense damage to the ecosystems of the countries they are made in. Look at all the umbrellas, latest fashionable clothing, water bottles, coffee cup lids etc etc etc. Then look at the live feeds of the aftermath - the rubbish left behind, the costs of clean-up. Why did she not reference this? Basically, I believe she is the wrong person, saying the wrong things to the wrong people. She has the opportunity to convince kids to do the right things at their level, but wastes it. I could go on, but I have bear traps to destroy.

She must have the biggest carbon footprint of any 17 year old in the whole World. Her own for all the travelling she does and those that flock to listen to her. It's all down to her. Oh , yes, today's effort trashed College Green in Bristol, turning it from a pleasant green open space in the city, into a mud bath...which now requires crowdfunding to restore it...eco-cool?

"I just don’t get it. Is she a messiah?"

No, she is just a person with a passion and who actually talks sense.

If anyone can give me three examples of why what she talks about (not her, or her age) is wrong then I would be very surprised.

Seems people just criticize her without actually expressing why her views are wrong.

Grass'll soon grow back. Nature has a knack of regeneration. Bit of mud trodden around on a day like today seems a small price to pay for saving the planet.

Her message is a global one, just because she visited Bristol doesn't mean she's only addressing the people of Bristol, media coverage was universal, which wouldn't be the case if she spoke in China.

She is annoying.

Yea there is a problem with global warming. But she is not providing solutions just shouting like a spoilt teenager. She sailed all the way to New York for a summit....how did she get home? Flew. What about the environmental impact of her mobile phone? Or is it made of tofu?

Apparently there is a 17 year old lad who has invented a way of collecting all the plastic out of the oceans but cant get any airtime.

Perhaps if the media organisations spent more time publicising solutions we might get something done.

I think too that it would be pointless her going to these other countries, they don't want to listen, Trump doesn't even acknowledge global warming, I have no idea what the Chinese government think. Our government seems to be starting to take it seriously but in the big picture it will make little difference if the UK cleans up its act but still buys its high carbon goods from China or elsewhere. The only way they will listen in the long term is if it begins to hurt them financially and that means we and the rest of the world stop buying from these countries. So in a sense it makes more sense to campaign in the countries where she has half a chance of being listened to.

Personally I find her annoying to say the least but she is right, very right and the sooner all people realise that the more chance we have of leaving an inhabitable planet for our ancestors to live on

"She offers very little solution.

What a wonderful big wheel we are on."

Just curious

How exactly her message differs from David attenborough

And he uses television to whine and indeed he does lament that humans litter with burnt fish juices too

Sadly I think Greta will be counter productive due to human nature

That being some are just stubborn contrarians

They feel they want to do what they want to do

Reasoning

Fuck her heres my 1.3 mpg v8 ha ha ha

There are many in palatable messages human need to hear not all have solutions yet

My reasoning is

I hope she can persuade the backward thinkers something must be done and that she inspires children the next generation to quest and find the solutions

So here is one of her aims

Persuade backward thinking leaders to invest in education and facilitates and facilitate the next generations hunger to pollute less

Gosh what a pathetic ambition to breathe cleaner air

Dont just get hung up on the climate change , hydrocarbon fuels pollute beyond that

And we can change and improve

Cfcs did destroy ozone . We are improving

High sulphur shitty coal and poor combustion DID cause acid rain and the destruction of buildings trees and human health

Guess what some one changed stuff and it improves

High carbon atmosphere may or may not change the climate for either better or worse

Distraction

The chemicals and co2 in burning dino and fish juices will and are causing acidification of water and other air land and food pollution

I call it littering

Her message is annoying

It's the same as David

Its correct and poignant

Nothing it how she says it which makes her annoying.

Has she really thought through her solutions as well, and the impact on the environment if everyone went to electric cars en mass? Where would all the precious metals come from? How would all the extra electricity required be generated?

What would happen if we all went vegan overnight? Just let all the food animals die naturally? Not all farms can be utilised to grow crops.

I respect her passion she is young and cares about her future.

I do suspect that someone is making a lot of money from her popularity.

14 million followers on Instagram, millions on Twitter that creates revenue.

People say she is from a wealthy family not exactly true, net wealth of her family is less than £250,000. I personally feel some scandal will come out at some point.

She is a Vegan that eats food from plastic tubs. Sails across the Atlantic in a solar powered Yacht with her father, a camera man and two crew, 200 pre packed meals eaten all packed in plastic, 200 plastic bottles of water 47 of which were not on board when it docked?.

Both crew members had to fly back to the UK and two Crew had to fly to the states to bring the Yacht back four flights to save one.

She needs to stop being on a crusade around the world and do it all from her home country. I am sure she has the followers to be able to do that.
