He's not even Welsh. I was just looking at something on TV and it says Prince Edward (who I'm assuming was Prince Charles Great grand father) killed the Welsh and took over.
This is out of order. |

They were causing all sorts of problems. The original Prince of Wales died in the war against the English. As a result Edward gave his eldest son to Wales as their prince. Its stuck since then.
Kinda. |

"It is a tradition that goes back centuries that the next in line to the throne is ordained as the Prince of Wales by the current standing monarch. "
But didn't Wales have their own king before the English came along? |

You're going back over 1000 years ... there was also the kingdoms of wessex etc ... which were all brought together to form the kingdom of England. History is beset with battles between the various kingdoms such as Scotland and Wales and Ireland. It was not until the early 20th century I think that Ireland became independent (or 19th century, I've not checked).
Some reading up on British history will reveal all sorts you know
Do you the world of good understanding why the UK is how it is now |

Prince of Wales was a title granted to native Welsh princes before the 12th century; the term replaced the use of the word king. One of the last Welsh princes, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, was killed in battle in 1282 by Edward I, King of England, whose son Edward was invested as the first English Prince of Wales in 1301

More accurately Anglo Normans (French/Vikings). Who had come over and taken over from the Saxons (Germanics) who had taken over from the Romano British (Italian) who had taken over from the Celtic Britons who had pushed out Brythonic tribes. It ain't as simple as nasty English bullying the poor Welsh. |

That is interesting.
What gets me is if the vikings or whoever they were at the time were so powerful.. Why didn't they call Wales and Scotland all England and claim the lot. |

The Welsh were busy fighting amongst themselves and could never hold the whole of Wales together for long. It took Edward to bring order |

From what I have read, it is believed the first identifiable language was Brythonic. Not much of that language still exists. As for a pre English language it in all probability looked a lot like Welsh/Cornish/and related languages from places like Brittany.
Modern English, however is a complete mix of Germanic, Danish, Norse etc etc. And constantly evolving. |

If you look in history books from centuries ago, South Pembrokeshire was the “Englishry” and North Pembrokeshire the “Welshry”. It was separated by a line of castles across the middle of the county called the Landsker Line.
“Little England beyond Wales” has its roots in history therefore.
The castles kept the Welsh in the north of the Pembrokeshire. It was a very strong Welsh speaking area, though when I visit know, everyone seems to be from London!!!
The contrast between the south and north of the county was very obvious and fascinating.
South Pembrokeshire was shaped by English, Norse, Flemish and Irish people’s. That’s why it’s so distinctive in Wales. |

The tradition of conferring the title "Prince of Wales" on the heir apparent of the monarch is usually considered to have begun in 1301, when King Edward I of England invested his son Edward of Caernarfon with the title at a Parliament held in Lincoln.
Edward marched his armies into Wales , building the ring of steel castles to subdue us troublesome Welsh.
The castles are still here and I know them well . |

True...
Edward 1 promised the Welsh a prince who could not speak a word of English. Relieved, the Welsh accepted but old Longshanks was a devious bastard and presented them with his own infant son. What is not said can be as important as what is said. |

To be fair, when I was at school we learnt very little English or British history. We need history of medicine and american history. "
How times changed, I’m 10 years older than you, the only American history we touched on was the war of independence and the civil war. Everything else was British based with world events added
I suppose it all depends on the school as well ![](/icons/s/2/eh.gif) |

Broadly speaking, after the Romans left in the early fifth century, the population of what is now England and Wales spoke a language similar to Welsh. Over the next three centuries various settlers came from northern Germany and became the majority population in what is now England. The word "England" itself derives from the name of one of those Germanic peoples, the Angles. The Germanic language spoken by these peoples developed into English.
The Germans didn't generally get as far as the far west so Wales, Cumbria and Cornwall remained mainly populated by the Welsh type speakers (cymru, the Welsh name for Wales, Cornwall and Cumbria all have same derivation). They developed as three seperate languages, Welsh, Cornish and Cumbrian.
Cumbrian died out around the eleventh century as the English belatedly colonised the area and Cornish died out as a living language in the eighteenth century (though there are currently efforts to revive it).
As for the English, there were subsequently waves of Scandinavian settlement in the eighth and ninth century and then there was a French speaking ruling class from the eleventh to the fourteenth century. English as a language was heavily altered by those foreign incursions. |

It ain't as simple as nasty English bullying the poor Welsh.
A point of order - a lot of the ‘Romans’ in Britain were from the provinces and so were Roman citizens but not necessarily from modern day Italy."
I accept that ... I used Italian as a shorthand ( Greek, Numidian, Gaul, Iberian and so on) |

Why all the uproar about Wales let’s be honest here we I loosely mean the English which depends on who was on the throne. Wether they be Norman, Tudor, Stuart. Or any Monarch going back.
Set about the age old pursuit of conquest, which basically means going to war slaughtering thousands and taking over and pillaging the land and populace of everything of value.
It started in culture long before England ever existed we just happened to probably ended up with the biggest so far in the world Has seen.
As for prince of Wales it dates back to Edward the 1st giving the title to his son. Edward the 1st also invaded Scotland and had William Wallace executed. Among many other atrocities.
But it basically boils down to greed and conquest. They wanted the land to raise more tax for the throne to raise bigger armies to concur more land to get more tax and on it goes. |

"He's not even Welsh.
Kinda.
So the English basically bullied the Welsh and took over.
In a manner of speaking.
And yet the Welsh accept him as their Prince "
Only the bootlickers. I suggest you look into Owain Glyndwr for a dose of Welsh history. |

"All this history has taught me that its the bloody foreigners that are the problem
I'd say the contemporary take out would be that people have always moved around and there has never been any such things as homogeneous national cultures. "
Has nobody mentioned the Manx people yet?
The Basques in the area of France and Spain on the Atlantic coast are extremely unique, with a language and culture that has no roots elsewhere. Paul from Youtube's Langfocus channel is well worth checking out things like this.
History, geography and language can not and should not be treated as isolated cultural identity.

Actually the Scots pushed out the original Pictish inhabitants of what we now call Scotland. The Scots (of Scottii) originated in Ireland. |
