"I find maps fascinating I can look at them for hours, visualising what’s led before me. "
Absolutely love them
Give me a os 1:25000 of anywhere and I'm engrossed especially if the topology is extremely undulating x
Sadly not engaged much with Harvey's
That said I'm equally taken by a globe or atlas

"I as looking the other day about secret things drawn into maps by cartographers, google "os maps hidden names""
I just did. That's so cool! I never knew that. I have found Mike, Rob and Liz written on beaches in the Isle of Wight. ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

This is incredible. I bought some the other day and thought of posting the exact same thread. I love a map me. When out cycling it allows to see the bigger and total picture as opposed to google maps which has its uses also. I got a load of Michelin maps from the charity shop. It made my day. The west coast of France in case you are interested as I want to cycle St Malo to Bordeaux in the summer. |

My first ever job was to be as a Cartographer. I went in during school summer holidays for a month's trial at Bartholomews in Edinburgh and sailed through all the tests etc.
But my eyesight failed me & I had to give up that idea.
However, I read maps like others read books. I don't use Sat Navs, just read maps to get around. |

I have to know how to use them, 10 figure grid references, grid magnetic angle, map north and true north, triangulating ground features to work out current location without a GPS and all that good stuff! |

I have a framed 4'x 3' map of the London Underground hanging in the hall wall.
Not only is it a simple map but also very colourful piece of artwork(mine is on a black background) Originally designed by Harry Beck 1933. ![](/icons/s/cool.gif) |

"Utter map geek here too.
Especially old OS maps.
Interesting to watch the variance of the magnetic north variance
What, watch it... like... Live..? That doesn't sound awesome to me. "
It moves gradually over time, so the older the map the more the offset.
It’s a curiosity, but it’s not a spectator sport. |

I was only saying the other day how we managed before Sat nav in cars. A good ordnance survey map and an A to Z map was all that was needed. I think most would struggle these days if the sat nav systems went down ![](/icons/s/eek.gif) |

Erm
I commented on a post referring to old os maps !
The mag variation is different to now
It is interesting how when and why it changes
Also very important to be aware of if one actually uses a map for navigation as I do ! |

I have a big collection of maps, I keep all the maps of all the places I've been to. I have a load of shipping navigation charts so I wallpapered one wall of my sitting room with them. I've a good sense of orientation, so can read a map upside down, when travelling. A great skill! |

Another map geek here! I could happily read an atlas for hours and have several, including a very fragile and extremely heavy Times edition from 1880 something which is fascinating from an historical as well as a geographical aspect. I absolutely love comparing modern maps with their past versions - the National Library of Scotland has a great site for this. Or losing myself in more niche maps such as those showing WW2 bomb damage, or Booth's poverty maps of Victorian London. Maps are so much more than a device for getting from a to b - they often tell a story too and/or describe the lay of the land depending on how they're drawn. Though of course they're brilliant for that too - hence I rarely ever use a satnav, but study a map beforehand and seem able to keep a snapshot of the shape of the route, the road numbers and the landmarks en route in my head which usually works for me!
I'd go so far to say that if I had to choose a desert island book I'd prefer an atlas of some description to a novel because it'd ultimately provide more reading material since you can look at a map several times over from different perspectives and constantly find new features. |

You can't beat a stop in the middle of a hike. A couple of scones, steaming mug of tea and a good look at the os map of where you're going.
I can still get lost, and a sat nav is useful when the mist comes down. |

"Love looking and planning the next trip. I find the route planning almost as good as the journey.
"
There's evidence that shows that planning trips is more beneficial mentally than taking them |
