And hotel in Tenerife places in lock down.

How will this affect the decisions on those of you who holiday there.

Of course they are making plans / precautions to deal with any severe outbreak of the virus.

This does not mean we are at that stage but just a government doing what it should do behind the scenes, so IF (I wish I could bold and underline) it comes to it, everyone knows what they should be doing etc.

The UK’s current status is...

The UK Chief Medical Officers have raised the risk to the public from low to moderate. But the risk to individuals remains low.

More information available here, which is clear and precise

Meanwhile the real risks to life are ignored here in the UK

Life expectancy had now flattened due to tory austerity as shown in a newly published report. Mirroring America as the only western nation with a now reducing life expectancy.

It’s flu, you might catch it, you might not. If you’re fit and well and you do catch it then the likelihood is you will survive it. Flu kills plenty of people every year, usually those poor souls that were sick or infirm anyway.

A few simple precautions around personal hygiene will help but we are not going to see a flu Armageddon. I think some people should head back to the bunker that they built for the millennium bug and sit tight though.

The nhs are asking us to call 111 if we have visited certain countries outside of the uk and experiencing cold like symptoms. A&e departments have the signs up saying basically the same. We had the same fear factor put upon us a few years ago with swine flu. This particular strain is spread in the same way as a common cold by close contact. I personally dont think there is cause to panic just yet.

Fab swingers or Facebook? Hard to tell on here.

Either way it's just spreading misinformation and utter bollocks 'this one time at band camp' type stories.

If you're stupid enough to be worried about corona virus, log off, go put your mask on and update your will.

Sounds harsh but if random misinformed comments / scare stories lead to even one person putting extra strain on the NHS it's one too many.

The one thing really in danger here is the economy, not just here but globally. That's what the various governments are concerned about. People sat at home for 2 weeks whilst ill, or trying not to get ill. Multiply that by several billion and you start to see how that affects finances. We could easily slip into a global recession.

There are several pillars of the Islam faith. One is to visit Mecca once in your lifetime. The decision is huge. Effectively we are seeing the beginning of international travel being shut down. I am booking no holidays for the foreseeable.

One observation from life has been that those who run around telling others not to worry or panic are often the first to crack under pressure. I saw it time and time again in the military. WUP...

On This Morning TV an expert virologist said that face masks are usless against Corona because the holes in the masks are two big and the virus very small and absorption through the eyes are more common way for the virus to enter the body. I have not people seen wearing goggles yet. Also he said that only a military grade respirator will protect against it..

It's the USA I feel sorry for.

Trump fired the country's entire pandemic response coordination team, and slashed funding for preparation.

Now he's put Mike Pence in charge of tackling the virus - a man who doesn't believe smoking causes cancer - who, in fact, doesn't believe in any kind of science at all.

Perhaps this is how the US learns its hardest lesson... because with these idiots in charge, a hell of a lot of people are going to die.

Unfortunately, as the saying goes, when America sneezes Britain catches cold. Given we, ourselves, also now have a slash/cut government who say they've "had enough of experts", this is not a terribly happy thought.

Unfortunately, as the saying goes, when America sneezes Britain catches cold. Given we, ourselves, also now have a slash/cut government who say they've "had enough of experts", this is not a terribly happy thought.

Of course it's not. Basing a precautionary response on best science, on the other hand, most certainly is needed.

The issue isn't as simple as figures based on current mortality rate of ~2%.

It's a zoonotic virus remember - that's to say it has jumped a species barrier. Such a virus has a much higher propensity to mutate following that.

A large part of any pandemic response will need to account for possible variation in incubation period, transmission and mortality.

As I said, it's a zoonotic virus... things can changer very quickly.

And yes, I have studied this.

Nothing might happen, but it's not impossible that we might have the same situation as in Italy or even worse, in China.

People fighting for food and empty supermarket shelves.

Today I grabbed all the organic granola they had at the Sainsbury's where I went. It won't go bad until October, so I'll have it anyway.

Next week I'll pile up a few basic supplies. I'll go to Aldi and get a whole box of the Kalamata Olive oil.

The Chinese government have restricted information from the world, as well as its people. And, as it's very new, there is very limited knowledge of it.

It appears to have similar methods of transmission to other known viruses, such as colds and flu.

It's got no vaccination yet, it'll probably be months.

It doesn't kill the majority of people who catch it. And seems to have symptoms by about 2 weeks.

Alot of this is easy to grasp, as we all know colds and flu. We know how to behave to reduce chances of getting it or passing it on.

"So it's zoonotic..

That is serious .. is it ?"

It can be serious. It just depends upon the strain.

People tend to be more concerned about a zoonotic virus because it has already demonstrated an ability to mutate sufficient to affect a new species (jump the species barrier) and so there's a higher likelihood it'll be able to mutate again. It's impossible to know what that mutation will be - it's random.

This means there are three possibilities: it could become less virulent, more virulent or stay about the same... or all three in different locations if spread widely enough.

Where it becomes less virulent, it's possible it could end up no worse than a mild cold or maybe even disappear completely. Where it becomes more virulent, it could become mildly more so or morph into an absolute fucker.

Since it's a virus which is new to the species to which it has jumped (in this case human), that species' immune system will not have any experience dealing with it - making it more of a risk yet to that species and potentially lethal if it mutates into a fucker.

So those are the severities. Then you have to consider factors that relate to spread, like incubation period and whether it has mutated to become airborne. If it has a fast incubation, symptoms appear sooner so it's easier to track and isolate an infected population. If it has a long incubation, it can spread very widely before anyone notices. If it becomes airborne it's far more infectious. So far, most of the really nasty viruses like ebola haven't become airborne - but there's no theoretical reason why such a deadly virus cannot.

Genetic mutations, especially those in viruses, are unpredictable but the odds are pretty high that something extremely nasty will appear sooner or later. The question in every lab is: will this one be the killer?.. or will it pass us by until further down the line, maybe the next one? Just nobody knows - it's all down to the roll of the dice. But it will come one day - that's about a definite.

I know this probably isn't what you want to hear but that's the truth of it. What happens next will simply happen and we'll have to deal with it.

On the plus side, you're unlikely to give it to your cat... unless it jumps another species barrier.

"

Sorry, but this is complete nonsense.

It's simply how the processes of nature works. Genetic mutation is what drives every natural differentiation. It's a part of the process by which organisms (and species) evolve, from the tiniest virus barely more than a strand of DNA to the blue whale. Including us - if you can digest milk as an adult, then biologically you are a mutant human.

New viruses are appearing all the time because they evolve (mutate) from other ones. Most will be mild, some will be nasty and the occasional one will be lethal. It doesn't need human action or a lab to happen... it's just nature.

We have been told this virus only affect the elderly and infirm,

however “ the Chinese doctor “ who first brought this to light was young.

He was one of the first to died from the virus ?

We do not know that the doctor died of flu.. was he bumped off? We will never know.."

That's illogical Tom, he was already abiding by the gagging order and working his arse off..

There have been several reports of how overstretched the medical staff are in Wuhan so it seems bizarre to think bumping off a doctor whose skills are very important..

The press cast this doctor as a whistleblower. Authorities may have silenced him. Did he know too much. Think about it.. It's not that far fetched.. Think Think Think

I know an 85 year old guy who yesterday stocked up. Scared of panic buying. He spent £120 on Big Soup. He loves the stuff and been living on it for years

Tom, thinking and keeping an open mind is one thing but grossly over thinking with all the connotations that go with that is another..

What is more realistic though, even as a younger man, that he was just completely exhausted from treating so many people and his immune system had dropped, add that to being in close contact with so many infected people

This..

Sadly there is an ignorance perhaps amongst some that this virus like others we have seasonally will be worse for the elderly or very young..

It will have been already I would like to think, will depend on how things go as to when that and other changes to what we see as daily life are implemented..

I heard a report, on a reputable news source, that corona virus is worse for the elderly but there have been no reports of deaths among the very young.

Both are more susceptible but equally so is anyone with other health complications and or a reduced immune system..

There was a bad virus going about before the Christmas in the county and sadly a young girl of 13 with no other health issues caught it, developed pneumonia and passed away..

China are still exporting however the lead times are being extended as they are taking the necessary precautions to minimize the transfer of the virus.

Our project has been extended 4 months because of this.

"In all honesty what do any of us actually know about the origins of this virus? How do we know this isn't some concoction from a laboratory in China.

Most likely from the USA

It's man made, that's for sure

Sorry, but this is complete nonsense.

It's simply how the processes of nature works. Genetic mutation is what drives every natural differentiation. It's a part of the process by which organisms (and species) evolve, from the tiniest virus barely more than a strand of DNA to the blue whale. Including us - if you can digest milk as an adult, then biologically you are a mutant human.

New viruses are appearing all the time because they evolve (mutate) from other ones. Most will be mild, some will be nasty and the occasional one will be lethal. It doesn't need human action or a lab to happen... it's just nature."

So you are saying there is no such thing as a man made virus?

Just need to keep it in perspective- flu kills over 2,000 people in the UK every year. Take all the usual precautions you do with the flu

I take the precaution of being vaccinated against the current strain of flu.

No, that's not what I'm saying. What I am saying is that nature produces so many new strains all the time that a naturally occurring serious outbreak is inevitable sooner or later... of which this outbreak is a good example.

If anybody likes to invest or has thought of it..

Markets are down -13%+ a correction will be made once the drop has stopped as the fundamentals behind it in theory is still very strong.

But, like Ebola. It crashed the markets, but the crash has just started... Think of your airlines, banks, pharma - anything that relies on China. Even apple is going to find it tough here...

Strong place to position yourself for a nice retirement - but seek advice if you are! As 85%+ loses money

Sars killed 10% of those infected

Coronavirus 1% of those infected

Flu 56,000 approx every year,

Just another thing to thin out the population

all loved up

Seen the most disturbing thing so far regarding this. I suggest any animal lovers dont look at the report about a dog of a lady suffering has had a mild positive test... if you read the whole report it says that it was found in the dogs nasal cavities but with such a low positive it is possible the dog is just showing signs from contamination... they have put the dog into quarantine for 14 days...

However this had led to apparently chinese people murdering their pets in case they can carry the virus. And the report showed images of animals flung from balconies etc... see now this I find more distressing than anything so far

And the thing seems to have been started by a cavalier attitude towards animal rights. Honestly...
