Apart from doing the internet equivalent of wailing, wringing your hands, tugging your hair and finally falling to your knees crying “Wake Up People” (several times) I have yet to see any forward solution or containment suggestion from you OP. We can all read the same online news reports, we have the same information, you don’t need to regurgitate it. Also, those of us reading are quite demonstrably both people and awake. Chill down a smidge. Have a pancake.

Wash your hands

Sneeze in a hanky and dispose of it

Don’t lick strangers faces

If you need to, stock pile tinned food, dig a bunker, lock yourself in and wait for the world to calm down dear.

Tom yes it's concerning but I'm not going to just shut myself inside.

Wash your hands regularly and look after your general health, that's all you or any of us can do.

You seem very anxious about this, maybe talking to a medical professional will help you with this.

People are sensibly taking precautions, you know, a sensible thing to do when there's a contagious virus about.

Just before Christmas multiple schools were closed, including my daughters, because of norovirus, it's a common occurrence when there's a contagious illness around.

Spanish flu in 2018 was just flu.

It happened to kill more people than were killed during the entire 1st world war.

However some of that is just statistics. We all die of something. A lot of countries put old age/ natural causes on the death certificate. We don't do that here.

We all have to die of an "illness"

don't let tom see what the US govt offical publichealth arm the CDC are now saying....

"not a case of if, but when it actually happens....."

"we are asking he american public to prepare for the expectation thatt this may be bad."

the other interesting thing is that the CDC expect it not turn up as a "patient zero entity".. like the brighton superspreader for example... but actually for it to turn up in "cluster variety"..... as in whats basically happened in italy and south korea.....

so the question now has to be asked.... what are the american govt possibly seeing that the UK govt arent?

Washing your hands often and not touching your face helps prevent surface transmission but still does not prevent person to person transmission.

"would boris go that far?"

Yes. I think so.

The truth is it's probably more likely than not that someone here will die from Covid 19.

However people are able to do their bit, and so many don't. So few people wash their hands on a regular basis. What do you think the percentage of people clubbing this weekend that washed their hands when they went to the toilet is? 10%? 20%? 50%?

Yet they'll be screaming out about their human rights if they are forced to stay in quarantine for two weeks.

Boris, or any PM for that matter, is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

True. But it doesn't answer my question.

The point that I believe Tom is making is that right now we don't know how many people will die from this. Nor who.

Perhaps if you are a person young and in good health it's easy to be dismissive about this. But if you are old and/or unhealthy as it is then it is of cause for concern. As others have pointed out, it isn't the chances of survival that are of concern, it's the ease with which the virus spreads.

And even if you are young and fit try sparing a thought for those who aren't.

Corona virus is nothing new there's many and like other zoonotic viruses they once they pass a species barrier their ability to mutate and replicate increases because humans are the largest species to ignore sickness symptoms. You get sick with a virus you go to work, school, shopping, blah blah you do everything you shouldn't spreading the virus to everyone

Animals get sick they end up segregated from the group and either recover or die limiting spread. You don't see millions of bats dying of this virus.

Flu virus kills annually 250k to 650k people. Over 5 million people severely effected most of which are vulnerable to sickness infants, the sick and elderly. But the average person still goes to work spreading the virus. Which has killed more than the novel corona virus.

It's important to quarantine as no one can predict its mutations at this time. Flu is predicted for vaccination by the possibility of any current new mutation and spread. Which is why people have vaccinations every year to cover the new mutations. They need time in order to create a vaccine if possible and to treat people as quickly as possibly who would otherwise die from it. China people have refused to be treated, they live in massively over populated areas increasing the spread.

With modern day transport virus can spread across the world in a day so for a new mutation with no way of stopping the effects quarantine is required.

In the UK depending on the type of flu you have our hospitals will quarantine you.

Did you know people still die from Ebola? And that the bubonic plague is is still around in 2020. These viruses and bacteria haven't gone they just arent news anymore. They still quarantine and treat it like any risk to life virus or bacterial infection.

If youre sick stay home look after yourself as best you can if it gets to the point you can't RING the gp or hospital no point spreading it in the clinic to other sick people.

Employers need to understand that enforcing people to work while sick their whole work force is at risk. So pay sick pay when someone has a contagious condition otherwise the workers expend in revenue from a sick work force and that's much more costly than a few days for an individuals recovery

So instead of scaremongering preach for better preservation of life

Actually, people are being quarantined to prevent a pandemic. The mortality rate for this virus is 20-30 times greater than flu. This has the potential to kill 1 to 1.5 million people. But no reason for anyone to panic.

How does that work in practice? You're standing in the Tube at rush hour and suddenly you cough/sneeze. Where do you dispose of your tissue? Where do you wash your hands?

Not criticising just trying to imagine that degree of consideration for others.... I can't count the number of times someone has come into work obviously sick and my OH who is in the education system says it's practically impossible to get parents to not send their sick kids to school....

Washing your hands often and not touching your face helps prevent surface transmission but still does not prevent person to person transmission.

It is greatly reduced if you cough / sneeze into a tissue, dispose of it and wash your hands. It’s basics which a lot of people can’t seem to follow

How does that work in practice? You're standing in the Tube at rush hour and suddenly you cough/sneeze. Where do you dispose of your tissue? Where do you wash your hands?

Not criticising just trying to imagine that degree of consideration for others.... I can't count the number of times someone has come into work obviously sick and my OH who is in the education system says it's practically impossible to get parents to not send their sick kids to school...."

It’s called improvising. If you know you’ve got a cough, cold etc carry tissues with you. Dispose of them in a zip lock plastic bag which you have with you. You can then use the anti bacterial gel to clean your hands.

It can be done if people think about it

On the other point, kids in schools that is down to the parents. Personally, my lad hasn’t been well since last Wednesday morning. We were on holiday and isolated ourselves in the apartment and I didn’t allow housekeeping to enter.

The only time we have been outside is the journey home and then again today to collect new medicine. We didn’t go out until after 2 and was back home before schools broke up.

Wake up Peoples more people die from flu the reason people are being quarantined Is its a new virus but look at the survival rate over 80,000 cases 2,600 deaths it's not a pandemic like flu can be you can come out now and stop worrying flower your not going to die

Actually, people are being quarantined to prevent a pandemic. The mortality rate for this virus is 20-30 times greater than flu. This has the potential to kill 1 to 1.5 million people. But no reason for anyone to panic."

Where did you get them stats from

Normalcy Bias: The Biggest Threat To Your Survival During Disasters Like COVID-19

Whenever a natural disaster or world-wide catastrophe like the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak hits the people can usually be divided into two groups:

Those who prepared ahead of time, and those that didn’t.

The people who don’t prepare usually operate under the mindset that everything is going to be fine, and nothing bad is really going to happen. They underestimate the effect of natural disasters no matter how many warnings are flashed before their eyes. This denial of the possible danger during a disaster is known as Normalcy Bias.

What is Normalcy Bias

Normalcy Bias is defined as follows:

Normalcy bias is a psychological state of denial people enter in the event of a disaster, as a result of which they underestimate the possibility of the disaster actually happening, and its effects on their life and property. Their denial is based on the assumption that if the disaster has not occurred until now, it will never occur.

The reason that Normalcy Bias is so dangerous in the middle of a disaster is that the people who want to deny the event will look to the people who have prepared for the event for help. All of their denials mean that they don’t have supplies ready for emergency situations, and that’s when desperation sinks in.

Normalcy Bias is a state of mind that develops before the disaster even starts, and it becomes exacerbated once the disaster event hits. Let’s examine the dangers of Normalcy Bias leading up to a disaster and why it’s such a huge threat once a disaster hits.

“It’s Never Going To Happen Here”

Disasters can happen anywhere, at any time. From terror attacks to weather events, disasters happen every day all around the world. While it’s impossible to predict when they will all happen, there are some very predictable aspects of natural disasters that can inform how you prepare.

Certain parts of the United States are known for weather events that occur every year on a seasonal basis. There’s Tornado Alley, or flooding in the Midwest, and every year there is at least one major hurricane that hits the East Coast

With all of this in mind, it would be hard to believe that there are people in these areas who don’t have an emergency plan in case something happens. Earthquakes aside, everything else happens on a season basis. From fires to mudslides, tornados and hurricanes to polar vortices, and large amounts of rainfall that leads to flooding. These things happen all the time, so wouldn’t it make sense to be ready?

Anyone who lives in one of the areas affected, which is just about everyone, should have some kind of plan. Yet, despite all of the evidence and the seasonal nature of these weather events, many people aren’t prepared for impending disasters.

“I Had No Idea This Could Happen”

The fact that 41% of people polled admit not being ready for a disaster is the first red flag of the dangers of Normalcy Bias. These people know that disasters, especially natural disasters, are imminent. They can happen at any time, and yet they aren’t prepared.

Why?

In many cases, these people don’t actually believe something is going to happen. No matter how many times you tell someone living along the Atlantic coast that hurricanes will happen, they will still deny that they will be impacted. What’s more is that many of these people become the ones who think they can ride out a hurricane. They’re the ones that ignore evacuation warnings because “it’s not going to be that bad” so they stay in their homes during floods, and when the waters pass their ceilings they’re on their roofs with signs asking for a rescue.

People suffering from cases of Normalcy Bias are the ones who look around in the middle of a disaster and claim that they had no idea something could happen, no matter how much evidence was there beforehand.

Sadly, while these people are lamenting their situation, they’re not making any progress in fixing their situations. While they sit around in disbelief that things have fallen apart, they’re also looking to see who is going to help them.

“Why Isn’t Someone Helping Us?”

The challenge for people who suffer from Normalcy Bias is that they’re the ones caught unprepared in the middle of a disaster. Rather than prepare, they prefer thinking that it won’t be that bad and nothing will happen to them, and as soon as things take a turn for the worst, they learn how wrong they are they start pointing fingers.

A classic example of this is when people who ride out hurricanes discover that there is no food or emergency services available during the storm and in the immediate aftermath. Their first inclination is to ask why no one is helping them. They could have evacuated; they could have packed supplies, and when everything falls apart they wonder why someone else isn’t helping them.

The problem with this line of thinking is that it puts first responders in unnecessary jeopardy when they have to perform dangerous rescues. If these same people put a little bit of effort into being prepared and listening to evacuation orders, things would be much different.

While zombie apocalypse scenarios are fictional situations, consider what usually happens following a virus breakout. Unlike a natural disaster, where emergency personnel will pour in to save the day when it’s safe to do so, a zombie apocalypse will keep going. Most depictions show a complete collapse of the government, so anyone waiting around for the government or the military to swoop in and save the day will probably be eaten before accepting that help isn’t coming.

However, first responders aren’t the only ones whose safety is at risk from people who are blinded by Normalcy Bias during a disaster. As it happens, you’re at risk more than anyone else.

Why Normalcy Bias Is A Threat To Your Survival

A common theme in disaster movies, whether it’s a natural disaster or a zombie apocalypse, is that people tend to fall into two categories: Those that are ready, and those that aren’t. Now, if you get caught in the middle of wildfire on public transportation, no one is going to fault you for not having your emergency kit ready. But generally speaking, there are people who plan and those who don’t.

If a massive earthquake struck, it could be days before help arrives. That means that people will have to rely upon the supplies they have on hand. The people who don’t have food and water will have to search for it, and if supplies are limited, there could be rioting.

Anyone who sees that you have supplied will want them. It’s possible that they will ask nicely for you to share your food and water, but it’s more likely that they will implore you to share while claiming (erroneously) that you have some moral obligation to share your supplies.

This presents a major challenge because of course, you want to help people, but you also have to consider your family’s needs before anyone else’s, and their lack of planning is not your problem. Should you refuse to share, it could lead to more than bruised feelings. The other people could resort to violence if the situation is desperate enough, and should they manage to steal your supplies it will leave you without.

Protecting Yourself

In the end, the only way to truly protect yourself from people dealing with Normalcy Bias in the middle of a disaster is to be prepared for anything, and to be prepared to defend yourself (including – and especially – your supplies) when bad things happen. All you can do is to provide for your own needs and make sure that you don’t share anything unless you’re willing to accept that one handout could turn into many handouts.

When Normalcy Bias turns into entitlement, and the belief that relief is “owed” to people who didn’t bother to prepare, you’ll find that desperation will quickly escalate to make a bad situation even worse.

The only way to truly combat Normalcy Bias during a disaster is to try to talk sense into people you know before the disaster strikes. If you demonstrate the need to be prepared, you just might inspire someone to pack a few supplies away just in case.

Quoted from the above...

"All you can do is to provide for your own needs and make sure that you don’t share anything unless you’re willing to accept that one handout could turn into many handouts."

We had a power cut quite a few years ago, our street mostly runs on electric, with gas central heating. Power was out for 18 hours, better than the 24-48 hours the power company said it might be.

We had a small gas camping stove, some candles, a few sets of batteries and a couple of torches.

One of our neighbours (a friend) had a young baby, so we heated water for her, sterilised bottles etc.

Other neighbours got to hear about it, and slowly the door knocks came, could we spare some hot water for a brew... and it snowballed, and soon we had to start saying no.

The mood on our street changed.

Threats were made.

It got scary...until Mart fronted up one guy, and loudly told him, with most of the street listening in, that only those with essential needs would get any help from now on.

The main problem, so far, is not the number of deaths, but how easily it is being spread, and how quickly.

Iran "doesnt believe" in quarantine, and given the scale and spread of visitors that visit their holy sites etc, this will probably be the worst culprit for pushing this out to the middle east.

How many of those 7.8 billion have been exposed to COVID-19 in the 3 months it has been around? Last month it hadn't left China.

What 56000 as a percentage of 7.8 billion?

What is 2600 as a percentage of 80 000 with all outcomes still unknown.?

The figures have been brought down through shutting down workplaces and schools. For how long is this sustainable?

Flu has vaccines, Corona doesn't. Cprona is new and we have limitex knowledge on it. It's not preventable by vaccine, it's uncertain and no one has previously caught it, with immunity. It's a possible concern due to the higher risk.

Soz bud but seasonal flu has been around for a hell of a long time. Sure its killed more people but it affects millions and millions of people world wide and has a mortality rate of 0.5%.

Corona however, is a serious issue. It’s killed nearly 3000 people out of the 80000 people that have been infected in 3 months. That’s nearly a mortality rate of 4%. If it isn’t dealt with or had been dealt with so efficiently it will be incredibly disastrous.

80000 is only speculative anyway - its a damn sight higher than that.. I’m following a GIS which is tracking the spread of the virus globally. Back at the beginning of feb the GIS reported only 6000 infected then and 136 deaths but at the same time a local in wuhan was speculating there was around 90000 cases in China alone back then.

My friend is a microbiologist who’s been working on samples of a clone of nCov (they weren’t allowed to import a sample of the Wuhan strain for obvious reasons), he’s just released a protocol to sequence it.

The one In China has basically come from a food market that was trading in essentially bushmeat. Coronavirus Ed often infect livestock and animals but this one has crossed the species barrier.

Just google the spanish flu from 1918-1920.. They didnt have the same knowledge, technology or travel back then hence it wiping out 27% of the worlds population.

I don't get it either. In the UK we have 1.5 million people over the age of 85. If there is a mortality rate of 14% in that age group then there is potential (note I said potential) for a lot of casualties. By my calculation over 200 000. That's no one I know, but I'm still concerned (not panic stricken or sitting in a bunker with a tinfoil hat) for those at risk.

Well if everyone is self isolated who is running the food factories, power plants, stocking the shelves in shops?

They called the shopping in Italy 'panic buying'. But if you are going to be forced to stay in your home for 3 days shouldn't you have 3 days provisions? To me that's just common sense.

"7.8 billion people on the planet 2,711 deaths due to virus

Average 55 milion people die every year 56,000 die from flu every year

Is coronavirus being over hyped by the media ? .....who knows .

Current models for the usual flu etc have it infecting 1 in 7, if Corona does that worldwide, with a mortality rate of only 4%, thats 40 million deaths!

Just curious. Did you sneeze into a tissue, put the tissue into a disposable bag, then wash your hands with antibacterial gel?

Central

I read the UK government, (I'm not in the UK), is considering localised travel restrictions, as well as preventing groups of people gathering. Anyone considering gangbangs could potentially get them sorted pronto

The Chinese seem to have supported the expansion of businesses that have been cultivating wild animals for food and their 'medicine'. Apart from that being an awful way to treat wildlife, there have probably not been much, if any, checking on the animals and products. This, following earlier major health problems, is inhumane to their citizens, as well as the world. Known risk levels of inter-species infection jumping are substantial.

I would have elderly relatives largely isolated, giving them suitable provisions, if the hazard level increases more locally.

Heaven in the Midlands

"Apart from doing the internet equivalent of wailing, wringing your hands, tugging your hair and finally falling to your knees crying “Wake Up People” (several times) I have yet to see any forward solution or containment suggestion from you OP.

Nice.

Do you have elderly relatives, or people you care about that have chronic medical conditions?

I only ask as, like you said, this virus won't kilkbus all...but it may kill them.

Whilst you glibly go about your usual routine, you may not take sufficient precautions, meaning you might catch it, but show no symptoms for a few days, a couple of weeks...or ever....infecting those around you.

Would you be happy knowing your laysey-fair attitude, or inaction, had killed someone?

And just to add....there is at least one proven case of someone surviving this virus, testing all clear, only to get it again. So it's different from "normal" flu, in that your body doesn't recognise it and fight it second time around. This virus could go round and round the same people.

The flu does that with some people too, it's a fairly rare occurrence but it happens. In fact quite a few viral infections do that, it's less to do with the virus and more to do with the individual's body and immune system. Exactly how some people don't show any symptoms, some show a few, and some show every symptom under the sun.

It could also be genetic production of antibodies failing

Much like black and tan gene in dogs means a dog cannot produce antibodies to fight parvo which is why parvo vaccines are no good. Infection would mean vaccines are no good to battle the virus. It could also be rapid mutation meaning current antibodies won't work on a new mutation. It was also stated current treatments for other coronavirus' don't work on the novel virus which is unusual. They have noted antiretrovirals for HIV and prep have been effective in treating the virus.

It's quite possible the theorised evolution of the cold virus predicted decades ago.

Practice good hygiene if your sick stay away from others. Use common sense.
