looking for something that wont crucify me on insurance, that's reliable, big boot for shopping/pushchair, small-ish engine (1.2 - 1.6), cheap to repair if things should go tits up. Oh and nothing too pricey

just a nice run around that's practical.

Im thinking Ford Focus

Ford Focus are a really good car came car of the year for about 5yrs running. they are very reliable, and usually pretty good on fuel too. Cant go far wrong with one of them.

focuses are nice... but be careful there are alot of lemons out there! we went to view one for a friend and the whole thing was f*cked... take someone with you who knows what they are talking about and knows how to spot the signs and if your buying private buy from their house! if they wont meet you at their house then don't buy it! ( but thats just basic car buying stuff)

Ever thought about Renault, the old style megane - the one shakin its ass - is a very good car, esp 1.9 diesel, gets loads in and cheap to insure, ive had 2 and never had any probs with either of them.

also, i vote 306... :D 1.9 turbo diesel.. very good, reliable and cheap to fix car... big enough boot space to put 2 bodies in... (not that i have ever tried that officer) and great back seats for passengers that also fold flat if you need to move larger objects... and they come in at about £1000/1500 for a decent one now...

My insurance on it was dirt cheap when i was 18 that's why i got one.. now i own a 998CC mini but i don't have kids or anything lol for me and my partner who was 20 at the time it was £325 FC i know premiums have gone up since them but if you have some no claims i would imagine it would still be fairly cheap( area dependant of course)

I wouldn't have thought it would be too bad, being female you get much lower premiums, as long as you've not had any significant claims in since you started driving, they usually let the first 3 points go, if you've been good before and since

def go for a diesel tho, you get much more miles for your money, plus the engines are much harder wearing

What about a Kia?

I got one after my focus died (the electrics melted onto the fuel pump and the mechanics face was a picture when he realised - apparently I should have exploded on the motorway instead of just coughing to a halt). They are very reliable - green flag guy who towed it after a colleague put petrol in instead of diesel said they only usually see them if a tyre goes.

They're not too fancy to look at but its cost me a lot less in maintenance than the focus did.

and only £35 road tax...

As females we no longer get preferential rates for insurance because some sodding *man* in brussels decided we werent due better premiums for being better drivers (at least by accident statistics)

and with the recent price increases diesel cars are only more economic if you do more than 10,000 miles a year.

Ever driven a bad focus but! The boot is small if you have a buggy. Astra not as nice as focus but bigger boot. Fabian is vw mechanicals, same as seat. £2k won't get you much golf though. Better value is a mondeo. The boot is HUGE and tends to be better value than a focus. Skoda Octavia good value too

I've a Volvo , doesn't often go wrong, unfortunately when it does ouch,, very expensive parts, 3rd party parts aren't always available either ,

I'd go Japanese.. ... but these days all major car brands are pretty good..

small renaults are good value for money as are the vw golf.ive never liked the focus tbh and i love fords.i'd stay away from a mk3 mondeo as well very unreliable and a new clutch will set u back a grand

lupo or fox are good cars.

polo has vw's usual high level of build quality.

1.5 (i think) diesel clio (around 02 plate) is £30 a year tax, 70 to the gallon and should be comparitively cheap insurance.

yaris' are suprisingly good also, and all should easily come in under your budget (and maybe even include insurance on them)

Until you said 2k I may have suggested a 2nd gen Toyota Prius as it is a fairly large car but only a 1.5 hybrid and low insurance, good mpg and low road tax...

See what you could get in trade in value

Personally we would never go for another focus (or any ford for that matter) neither would we go for a french car, every french car owned by us or any family member has ended up costing loads. IMO vauxhalls are the way to go, reliable, cheap(ish), parts readily accessible

My astra is ok, but thirsty as hell (1.6 16V)

French is cheap, but not that reliable.

German is expensive, but very reliable.

Depends how much cash you have to throw about really.

Either way, newer diesels are the way forward for economy.

your opinion, in a consumer market of many tens of thousands, doesnt really give a fair representation of a brand.

FORDS: had an escort recently and NOTHING went wrong with it.

had countless peugeots (all 406 diesels, tbh,) and again, apart from the gearbox on the one NOTHING went wrong with any of them.

had many many vauxhalls and was always fixing them (but still absolutely lovve them and would have one noww if there were any decent cavalier diesels around)

had rovers and, apart from clutch trouble, they have been problem free also.

"

Maybe it doesn't give a "fair" representation, but, it is as i said MY OPINION, i didn't say it was law....

The older fords were ok, i had a good 5 or 6 and no problems. Then came the focus and mondeos both of which nothing but trouble.

The french cars i am on about we had pug 406, like yours the gearbox went, taking the clutch with it, very expensive repair. family members have had renault clio's and meganes, citreon c3 all of which had problems, some simple cheap repairs others mega expensive.

Have had vauxhall for a number of years now and no problems whatsoever.

So again IMO vauxhall are better.

And you know about how to get cheap insurance don't you? There are lots; some like gocompare (I've just googled insurance for young drivers) do all groups but when my kids were looking they used one from a magazine that is specially designed for your age group
