Because it's a degree of separation from real life. Many do it. Not many knock a decade off but plenty a year or two. It gives a margin of plausible deniability on the off chance someone thinks they know you in real life and potentially wants to stir things. For many that's important work wise and to maintain a little privacy.
Be honest. If you've ever met someone in a club is their actual age something you ask? If you were chatting someone up in a bar is it an early question?
Does a year or two change your view of someone entirely? I suspect if ages disappeared from profiles people would still focus on the pictures (as plenty do now) and make decisions based on them alone.

It's really impossible to tell in most cases. Knock ten years off your age and upload a ten year old photo. By the time anyone finds out, chances are they have travelled to a meet or let you in and it's going to be difficult to change their mind.
I have my real age up but I'm told I could pass for much younger. I've spoken to people on here who have taken lots off their age they have later confessed. |
