Cakes I have dreamt of........
Jump to: Newest in thread
Years ago ...... there used to be this shallow sponge. It was decorated with the most zingy lemon soft royal icing that had crisped on the surface....... I'd kill you all if someone offered me a slice...
And then there was a princess sponge ( if you are a commoner ) or princesstarta ( if you are an officionado. Light sponge with raspberries on the bottom layer, more sponge with creme patisserie and finally a mountain of cream bigger than a bin lid and then finally a layer of icing over the top .....
Sigh ......
Now there's jaffa cakes.. and nasty little chocolate rolls....
What do you miss in the cake world.... ? |

There was a shop in Knightsbridge that used to do a jam doughnut, I swear you couldn’t lift it without using both hands.
There must have been half a pound of jam in there and the icing sugar on top just made the whole thing zing.
If the traffic light system of sugar, fat etc had existed back then it would all have been fluorescent red.
God, it was delicious. I used to eat it at about 8am on the way to the office and I’d still be full by midday |

"I could really go a traditional pineapple upside down cake with cherries in the rings. "
I made one of these in cookery at school. I love a piece right now with vanilla icecream |

Not really cake but sort of...steamed treacle pudding that mum had boiled on the stove with more cold syrup on the top.
Any cake made with proper butter and good eggs. Most have vile marge and cheap eggs in but if I was going to fight over cake it would be coffee with thick layers of buttercream or rock buns straight from the oven. |

The good old fashioned traditional currant buns.
One bakery in town still does them. I'm massively addicted to them but thankfully I'm other side of town to said bakery otherwise I'd be huge!
They are so hard find and Im sure in my lifetime they will disappear altogether. Teacakes and hot cross buns are not the same!
I also really miss the Sara Lee cherry bakewell meringue pie. That was lush. Though my homemade one was much better.
And the fact you can't buy a lemon meringue pie with the soft meringue on top many places is also quite sucky. |

Oooo if you ever make it to a seaside town in the NE, called Whitby, go to Bothams bakers and try a lemon bun you will not regret it |

"When we were up in Dundee this time last year we discovered the delights of the fudge donut.
A donut the size of a house brick, with custard inside and fudge icing on top..... beyond sexy.... "
That sounds amazing! |

Yesterday I made a peach upside down cake, with a caramelised brandy glaze, topped off with Chantilly cream. |

"In Scotland I fell in love with pineapple tart.
It may amuse the Scots to know that these cannot be bought any where else.......
Unless a fabforumite knows better."
What was in it? Love to try. I like making new things or seeing if one of the ladies I know has an old recipe handed down from. |
