I realise that this is not exactly the right forum but we want to reach as wide a range of people as possible to get an answer.
We are thinking of having a week in the maldives in one of those pods on stilts in the sea. We've heard that as a muslim country you have to be quite modest and no topless or nude sunbathing.
Anyone give us some guidance in this respect..is it the same in a resort or can the girls
at least wear a bikini or at least go topless!

In a resort you can wear what you normally would on a beach holiday although I believe topless sunbathing woukdnt be encouraged. It's only on the mainland and on the non resort islands you would need to cover up |

I think if you are going to go to a muslim country you should respect their culture. I've not been to the Maldives but certainly when I was in the Gambia youd see people out and about in bikini tops and it just seems massively disrespectful. I can't imagine anyone would say anything let alone do anything but I guess it depends on how you want to be perceived and how you want to interact with the locals.

I saw loads of people topless in Mauritius on the beach and by the pool.
I would never disrespect the local laws personally.
In the Maldives bikinis are fine on the beach and resort. Go of them then cover up. |

My hotel in Belle Mare, Mauritius didn't allow it. There were notices saying it would offend local people. "
I was at Le Morne there were notices all over the place. Think it was mostly French people who did it. |

You don't really go out of a resort as the resorts themselves are islands. If you were to take a trip to the capital Male then you would be advised to cover shoulders and not wear skimpy clothing |
