Was beheaded, poor chap. And is patron saint of:

Affianced couples, against fainting, beekeepers, happy marriages, love, plague, epilepsy, Lesbos (the Greek island).

So happy Valentine's day to all the Lesbian (from Lesbos) beekeepers with plague and epilepsy.

There is a version of his story that says he wrote a note to some woman before being executed signing it from 'your valentine.' The entomology of Valentine is play on his actual name Valentinus.
