We’re all aware of that feeling when you open a social media page and there’s an ad for something you’ve spoken about or thought about recently. Pretty creepy.
So yesterday I start talking about the band Megadeth. Someone had mentioned they were playing where I’m going to be in a few days.
All of a sudden Megadeth are now on my Apple Music shuffle - a lot. Very rarely get a play normally.
Yesterday a friend went to see Steel Panther in Glasgow - similarly loads of Steel Panther tunes popping up.
Black Crowes - touring soon, tickets on sale, I have some in my collection BAM! There it is coming through.
Is it clever algorithms, privacy invasion or incredibly clever marketing strategy?
Anyone else noticed the music streaming ‘coincidence’? |

I have and i tested, i spoke about cat food (i don't have a cat, and please no lack of pussy jokes smart a£$e) sure enough a few days later...cat food adverts.
Also, if you use Facebook they now have the right to look at you, and instagram...if you slow your scroll because something catches your eye it looks for your facial expressions! And feeds that back to the advertiser on how you respond... |

If you have an Alexa it will target ads etc based upon what its heard you say in general conversation. |

I first heard about this about 18 months ago but never experienced it until last year when all of a sudden things i had been talking about started appearing mainly on facebook. I went into the privacy settings in the phone and turned off the microphone access to various apps and everything seems ok again.

"I muttered to myself at home that technology is getting clever at listening
I laughed
Alexa laughed
Siri and Cortana laughed..."
Yup.
When my broadband wasn't working properly, I said out loud 'I'm not sure the solution to tech not working is more tech' following a phone call to my ISP.
Google home (living room home hub) said 'goodbye' ![](/icons/s/2/eh.gif) |

I've not had it from just talking, as far as I am aware. Facebook used to track your browsing whether you want signed in using it or not, as well as from websites you'd visited, if they had its trackers installed. Nasty.
Thank goodness for the EU and laws such as for GDPR.
I don't search on google. I also don't allow tracking cookies.
Use of more privacy focused search engines that don't teack or save your searches, as well as more privacy engineered Web browsers. Is important imo, as I dislike my data being stockpiled, sold on and amalgamated by others, without payment to me. Your data is being sold all the time and some organisations are adding it all together, so that anyone can buy it. Not good.
I'll test my phone for some things I don't need, see if it gets heard.
Search for private search engines, instead of google ![](/icons/thumb_up.png) |
