Lifting is hard work! And results take time, method, and patience. I most certainly appreciate "
I admire dedication and hard work in any sport but is weight lifting actually good for you? I have heard some horror stories about people getting injured and suffering with problems caused by weight lifting when they get older . |

I'm not sure any sport or physical activity is free of such things. It's about being mindful and working around your limitations, I suppose. It's done my health a lot of good. |

True, maybe when you get to the top competing level it becomes more of a problem . Eddie Hall has stated he had to quit top level strongmen competition because of the negative effects it has had on his health . |

I deliberately made it about weight lifting to keep it broad. I lift. I'm certainly no Eddie Hall |

I now do seated/lying weights only due to disability and the improved strength that's come of going back to the gym has helped other niggles to stay at bay. It's harmful if done with poor technique or to massive extremes in my view. |

I started lifting to compensate for an injury, and my function has improved and pain decreased a lot. |

I don’t lift weights. I just use them as part of my workouts to help me to be fitter, stronger and healthier than I would be if I didn’t. My use of the gym and weights helped with the use of some anti-hypertensives to reduce my blood pressure and eliminate left-ventricular hypertrophy (commonly known as weight lifter’s heart). I use fairly low weights with a high number of repetitions, so it improves both my strength and cardiac stamina. I still have plenty of work to do to continue to maintain and improve my health and fitness but it’s a few steps in the right direction for me. |

Strength training is fine but to get to the size that many bodybuilders are requires some sinister by products. I go to the gym and I'd say that over 80 per cent are reflection athletes , there priority being there own reflection and not the functionality of the bodies. Most are like bicycles with a wheel that is warped. True fitness is a combination of strength flexibility stamina and maintaining lean muscle mass and in my opinion you have to be able to run ,a prerequisite to survival as hunter gatherers which constitutionally we still are. It turns out that the best exponents of true fitness are not the Joe wicks or Jane Fonda but our ancient ancestors who pack chased there prey through persistent hunting swam and dived for fish ..foraged for berries and nuts ..climbed trees to search for prey and consequently kept agile and mobile or they died. |

It's not such a fantastic notion that the illusion of stability could be shattered at any given time . There are so many doomsday scenarios that could mean we plunge back into a primal existence. While a body builder physique can look impressive it is the lean mobile agile quick guy who is more likely to survive. |

Thats probably because of the abundance of juice and calories he's consuming, can't be good for the heart or organs |

I tend to use my own bodyweight now rather than adding addition weights.
Pull ups / held squats/ push ups..and long hikes with my brother's dog, couple of times a month.
(I'm avoiding heavy external weights due to an on going back/disc condition that i don't want to make worse.) |

Working out is more of a lifestyle in my opinion. Eating right and working out constantly is important to achieve what you want to achieve.
Mixing up training after a period of time is important too. Your body adapts to training method's otherwise any gains become slow.
There's too much bullshit in social media saying try my 5 minute ab workout etc. The dudes/lady promoting is being paid to lie to you. Their killer bodies are from endless hours in the gym and eating right.
It's a marathon not a sprint. |

Totally agree with this. Healthy body is a long process and as soon as you skip on a few days/weeks you are almost back to square 1. (I’m waving from back at square 1)
But I do think I have lost more and become stronger from having a calorie deficit and lifting instead of only cardio. |

You'd be able to do it. You'd obviously just have the ripped natural look. There's plenty of natural bodybuilder competitions where the guys don't look like the hulk just ripped. |

Weights does make a massive difference over to just cardio if you're wanting to sculpt your body. |

Never heard anyone say we need to lift something heavy up. Here's one example of people who will say just that. Firefighters. When they carry people out of buildings and so on. There's a few in the gym I go to. They're some of the fittest and strongest guys in there and I've never seen them pose in the mirror once. |

I hate training in front of the mirror. My PT acts as my eyes to adjust my technique etc. I only train under PT guidance due to my disability so a) o don't do myself a mischief and b) because can't set up weights on the barbell etc on my own. He's a smashing guy |

Some people spend 50 quid on a haircut, or spend buckets on make up and moisturisers. So what? Let people live their lives. Very true about weightlifting, Olympic or power, extreme weight and poor form is a recipe for disaster.
Having said that, most ex competitive bodybuilders that I know who are around my age, have all got problems, be it from joint damage or junk use.

Odd that some can be so irritated that they attempt to write posts apparently deliberately designed to insult
Here's the thing if a person illustrates they, maybe wilfully ?dont wish to understand the potential benefits it will be totally pointless giving them any insight
I will however admit skiing deep powder all day and climbing mountains all day is utterly useless to society

"During a dead lift.... feet wide apart, or shoulder distance?"
Depends on your own anatomy, mine are only 12-14 inches apart, toes out about 15 degrees. This where I generate the most power.

That's a sumo deadlift.
I know Rhianon, she's tiny. Again anatomy dictates to some degree her foot placement but also what generates most power.
You're over thinking it. For most casual gym goers it doesn't need to be that complicated.
If you want to deadlift concentrate on good form and find a comfortable foot position, you'll know when it feels right, simple really.
