Getting rid of a cat?
Jump to: Newest in thread
We have a cat from a couple of doors down which seems to have taken a bit of a shine to us, keeps trying to get in our house, and its gone way past being cute and funny now!
We've told the owner who doesnt seem to give a shit, so any ideas on how to (nicely) "persuade" said cat from trying to adopt us? |

orange scented stuff - cats hate the smell. I have 2 cats, both dont like it. Dont feed it, dont pet it, dont pay any attention to it. Its hard, but if you blank it, it will move on to another sucker! |

Hose pipe or a bucket of water.
It not cruel but the cat won't like it one bit.
Trouble with cats is they take a lot of signs like looking away as an act of submission.
My dad hated cats and they always jumped on his lap, my grans once with a freshly disemboweled mouse as a present. Priceless memories!! |

"Pepper is good too. I believe you can get repellent from home & garden stores too although I think that's maybe to stop them crapping on your property "
Dont want to go down the repellant route, planning to get two kittens very soon ourselves, looks like a bit of water torture is on the cards!! |

you could attach a ceiling fan to your back door with a bit of improvisation and ingenuity. Ceiling fans have a knack of getting rid of problems cat. there is a video available on youtube demonstration this to great effect |

... call the RSPCA tell them their owner is neglecting them and it keeps coming to your house for food etc. and they will take it away for you,, if the owner doesn't care they don't deserve the cat anyway it should go to a good home! or alternatively if its cute and not black or short haired give it to meeeeeeee :D

My mate had the opposite annoyance, his cat used to disappear for hours to the old lady downstairs. My friend got really put-out by it ..think he felt snubbed |

how would you suggest the owner stops their cat going to your house? cats arnt like dogs they go out and do their own thing, i have 3 cats but i cant tell them where they cant and cant go when they are out
I wouldnt have thought it hanging round your house is actually hurting anything so just leave it, ive always got other peoples cats in my house as i have a cat flap and half my streets cats come in and eat the food, every time i walk in the kitchen theres another one in there noshing my food nothing you can do about it, bar locking my own cats out, but they just cats they not hurting anyting |

right, we have made a note of all the people we will not be inviting to our house seen as though we have 2 cats
Cats are creatures of habbit, initially when they came to yur house (as you said it was cute and funny) I assume you petted the cat and possible fed it, that is a signal for the cat to come back.
Most cats have 2 homes anyway, and as I say they are creatures of habbit,
The best thing you can do is completely ignore the cat, within a week he will have moved on to someone else who shows him affection, no need for pepper spray, rottwielers or crocodiles
Just out of curiousity if you are planning on getting kittens then why are you so against this cat showing you some love? |

aw hunny be careful if strays manage to get in too don't let them share the same food bowl, we (me and Ex) tried to take in a stray once, luckily we never let him or Sam share the same bowl, eventually when it got used to us enough we got him checked out at the vets and the poor baby had just about everything imaginable wrong with it the vet insisted on putting it to sleep..... talk about a guilt trip. |

Plastic surgery, abandon your house, fly too rio de janiro then hide in a bush with a water pistol, 22 air rifle some size 10's, a hose and a lead. Be prepared these fuckers are dangerous |

One thing about being owned by a cat is that your garden will remain cat crap free and no other cat will use your garden either.
Ive always had cats and before being adopted by the one I have now had a cat who lived till 23, out lived all of her kittens, one of which was shot and had its right front leg amputated! Surprisingly the police were very interested as there had been a spate of poisonings!!
I was then adopted by the current one who appeared in the garden, then appeared in the lounge after coming in through the open patio door one summer evening.
Then turned up with its inner eyelid hanging out!
A large vet bill later he's now very comfy sitting next to me! I new where he came from but the 'owner' field he needed to 'toughen up' as he was on of six...
Needless to say he didn't offer to pay and cat lives here..great company, very affectionate, opens doors, 'talks' to you and is there waiting for you when you get home. |

".22 airifle works wonders
Nice one!
Perhaps I can send you the vet bill for the amputation of my cats front leg!
"
Likewise! My cat was shot last year, through her spine, spleen and bowel. A major five hour operation, a week in intensive care, excruciating pain, a nervous breakdown (me) and £1400 later she survived.
If I EVER get my hands on the c*nt who did it, he'll be wearing his tiny balls as ear rings. |

actually you can solve this, you can now get cat flaps which will only open for a magnetic tag your cat is wearing on its collar
you can also get versions which will read your cats chip (assuming its chipped) and only open for your cat

Sadly, they don't always work like that. I have a cat who wears a magnet for her cat flap. Yet, I have two intruder cats that just kept head butting the cat flap until they got in. They run away as soon as they hear me moving towards them (so no chance of squirting them with water) and they are here most days. |

Well done you - nice story, and you're obviously a good servant to your cats
We've always had cats, and always end up with the "fixer-uppers" that nobody else wants from the cat shelter. At the moment, we have 5 but in terms of complete ears, legs, and tails, we have 3.5 miscellaneous moggies
And to the OP, a squirt of water mixed with a little orange or lemon juice should work. Also good in vodka |

if you know were the cat is coming in put crushed eggshells down cats wont walk on them because of the soft pads on there feet but it doesnt harm them ether
also stops them going near your plants if you sprinkle them on the soil |

We love animals, but this is someone elses pet, its manky, and needs a vet visit, and we dont want to pay for someone elses neglect, we havent been friendly to this cat, but we havent shooed it away either.
We choose our pets carefully, we get them checked and keep them as we would members of the family, that costs us enough without getting landed with all the local waifs and strays, it sounds hard but thats the way it has to be. |

You can't control a cats choice of where it stays our old cat decides it preferred our neighbours when we moved house and not content with the house we had just moved into it did a moonlight flit next door! Stayed there for 10 years!!! |

I'm with you on that! I have 2 cats too and if anyone even attempted to hurt them I would ram a 16inch silo so far down their throat it would come out the other end! I think I would do that to anyone hurting any animal! |

Just been reminded of the time I got a 'card' through the door saying my parcel had been left 4 doors down... I walked down the road and Sam (my cat) followed at my heels, got to the house (never been there before) knocked and stepped back, Sam plonked himself in front of me looking up at the door.
A minute later the door opened the woman glanced at me, looked down and said
"Oh hello Sam" he just up and strolled passed her into her house lol!

Hard to believe you haven't heard of the RSPCA or the PDSA
Give either of these a call and if you're worried about upsetting the caring owners you can call the RSPCA annomously!
Just because you don't want to put your hands in your pockets to help this animal there are places that will, don't let an animal suffer for poor owners. |

The owners of said cat need to punish it by grounding it and sending it to it's room without supper. no treats, no tv and no Xbox !!
failing that, call rspca or thunder cats |
