Five British skiers confirmed with virus in France. Getting scary now

Why does it scare you?

There and to the left a bit

What's scary is the level of panic some are going to - there have been around 35000 confirmed cases globally (the overwhelming majority in China) which is minuscule in percentage terms compared to the overall population by comparison to other viruses.

Yes it's obviously a concern and needs to be, and is being, contained as far as it can be but in the greater scheme of things is it a threat to humanity on a widespread scale worthy of panic? Not for me it's not.

Coronavirus is actually what the start of a cold is named. And its origins.

The cold then develops in lot pneumonia and then occasionally a new strain of pneumonia is created. One was SARS, the other Mars.

SARS has infected around 0.02% of the population and Mars about the same.

The people dying are because of lack of proper medication, in countries that are either 'third world' or like China who have no basic human rights as a nation.

Dont worry. We ain't gonna die. We have excellent medical equipment and know how to deal with a new strain of pneumonia. Just be careful around children and elderly, just like any flu bug.

Is there a medication for it? I thought they were working on it...

It they have cancelled the F1 with all that revenue lost then there must be a huge risk. I wonder if behind closed doors the drivers union and pit crews were uneasy

They've just taken a sensible precaution as a preventative measure that all ties into the overall containment process - China is obviously the highest risk area for it, so it's a logical step to avoid it simple as that.

I only know what I've read and heard on the radio.

I have no idea of the truth behind its origin and how it's spread. I suspect that not many do.

I genuinely don't think there's much is ordinary people can do but keep ourselves sensibly informed and take reasonable precautions e.g. hand washing.

I have close family in asia, I'm not overly concerned for them but I'm more so about them than us.

Best (and likely) case it plays out fine with a standard death toll no different to previous modern viruses.

Worst case it culls a bit of the world's population, mother nature taking care of business and just dealing with and keeping in check a very irritating and damaging pest problem.

Bacteria thrive in moist conditions and salad bars are notorious for being a source of food poisoning.

I am not sure that washing hands is not another red herring. I read that it's people not drying them properly after washing them that is s bigger problem. Apparently if you don't wash your hands properly and then use one of those high speed air dryers it just launched millions of tiny bacteria into the air to be breathed it by other people...

To put a little perspective behind this....there are 35000 confirmed cases globally - which is 0.0005% of the world's population (even narrowing down to China gives 0.003% of their population).

By comparison and picking the first disease I thought of - at the last count there were 132,000 reported cases of cholera globally - which in percentage terms is almost four times as many.

Is there a mass panic about cholera?

A healthy human who has built resistance through being exposed to bacteria since birth has a pretty good immune system. Obviously I don't know about our resistance to this particular strain of coronavirus but as far as ordinary every day risks go, most of us are ok with normal thorough hand washing .

The virus itself doesn't really kill. It just sets up your immune system to be potentially weak enough for something else to do so, pneumonia for example. In the case of most healthy adults it's not going to do enough to weaken your immune system enough, but it will weaken/but strain on it.

The very young, the elderly, and those with already compromised immune systems are those at risk because of it.

When there is enough evidence and information outside of the shock and grab scaremongering media but they are too lazy to check.

Fear and concern are two different things.

Those who are using logic are just as concerned, they just use common sense and that logic to not be fearful over something that is not worthing fearing.

People are freaking out and worrying solely based on the media provided fear machine.

Majority of the time fears are not dismissed, they are proven to be pointless, when provided with actual evidence and logic they are still fearful so it reaches a point that the only thing you can do is dismiss their fear because they don't see reason.

I have been all over Europe and have ate everything from horse meat to cat. And yes in some parts of Europe they used to eat cats and it was years ago in parts of Spain.

I had dog in Hong Kong 15 years ago.

Am starting to feel old. And snake/ mice/ hedgehog/ and other funny food stuff.

When I was young we took an old banger car and drove around Europe. Ending up in Moscow where we a McDonald's. And it was only opened a month.

I think I might look up the dates and old photos . Me brother and two mate's 5 weeks two tents and a lime green lada. And in Moscow someone pinched the window wiper blades. And only time I had bad food poisoning was in Belfast after eating two hotdogs

Yes obviously but a large scale panic does not happen over the flu like it is with this.

In this country, regardless of the state of the NHS, the health care and human rights, and just straight up density of the population (except maybe London, good luck guys!) all point towards very little to fear, even for those with weakened immune systems.

China on the other hand is not even close to our quality of health care and quality of living (as a whole), they have next to no human rights, and the population is immense - plus it was the country of origin. Its going to appear like the next bubonic plague in that case.

Your example is not lack of fear, its stupidity and lack of common sense. I'm not scared of violent storms but I respect them. Logic dictates go to high ground during floods and extreme coastal storms. Big difference.

Yes fear saves lives, fear. Without it most living creatures would have died out long ago. However it is also a killer itself as fear leads to things like inaction or mass panic. Fear snowballs and becomes a burden.

Caution, not fear, is what truely saves lives. I say this as somebody who actually has a weakened immune system. If I were in China or another poor health are country you are damn right I'd be scared and fearful. But I don't, I live in a high quality health care country with largely clean living so I enact caution because the overall risk is low.

It has everything to do with it - from the authorities lack of action in respect to the common people, to them censuring those that are seeking to get something done about it - one of the first doctors to identify the virus and try to raise the alarm was arrested for trying to do so, and has since died as a result of having contracted the virus.

Human rights includes access and right to health care. A large number of the Chinese population don't have a right to any health care nevermind a decent quality health care.

It does imply that it's more serious than we previously thought. I understand that it's now possible to be forcibly required to enter isolation.

Don't let it affect your day to day life though Tom. If action is being taken it does limit the risk somewhat

"The Health Secretary has just announced that Coronavirus is a Serious and Imminent Threat to the British Public.

Worrying development"

Not at all - it's a purely legal step taken to allow the Government to put in place measures to detain people in quarantine if necessary.

Public Health England still have the threat level at moderate.

To put some perspective on this - the mortality rate of this virus is around 2% - the mortality rate of SARS was around 20% - the mortality rate of a virus currently spreading in parts of the Middle East but that hasn't been as widely publicised is 30% - so again by comparison the effects of the virus in the news is minimal compared to other known viruses.

Is it a concern? Yes, but it's important to avoid scaremongering also, especially without a true appreciation of the situation.

Just as well because buying those masks is a big waste of money, just wash hands regularly and don’t put unwashed hands near you’re mouth eyes nose ect.

"The Health Secretary has just announced that Coronavirus is a Serious and Imminent Threat to the British Public.

Worrying development

Not at all - it's a purely legal step taken to allow the Government to put in place measures to detain people in quarantine if necessary.

Public Health England still have the threat level at moderate.

Indeed.

Also just to add on to that, the concern by officials and scientists and doctors (overall) is less about the mortality rate and more about the actual rate it is being passed on. It is highly contagious.

Yep, four times more so than SARS but then less so than many other viruses around - and the actual contraction rate has dropped in the past week.

There's a contagion scale that scientists use to monitor how contagious a virus is - so in the case of 1:4 the thinking is that someone with the virus will pass it onto 4 others - by comparison SARS the contagion was 1:1.5 but the Middle Eastern Virus is something like 1:8

It's also important to note that they have also said this morning that contraction rates (the number of new cases reported) have decreased over the past week which suggests that the various containment efforts are starting to become effective

as others have said... this is more of a legal thing,

reason why they have done it is at the moment they are asking people "voluntarily" to self-isolate (basically stay home) for 14 days....

some of those asked are not happy and they said they were not going to take notice/abscond.... so this way the government can legally tell people to "stay home"...

the annoying this is that this one "super-spreader" has basically infected a dozen people that we know of so far on this route from singapore....to france... to brighton!

"I heard that in hotels the salad bar is the biggest risk for bacteria breeding.. it's possible that melon on a breakfast bar could harbour the virus but think the watermelon is a red herring

I don’t ever eat from a salad bar. They’re full of germs.

Oh god! I'm always eating from salad bars on holiday

I’m just thinking of normal every day germs ... you know, from people not washing their hands etc

I am not sure that washing hands is not another red herring. I read that it's people not drying them properly after washing them that is s bigger problem. Apparently if you don't wash your hands properly and then use one of those high speed air dryers it just launched millions of tiny bacteria into the air to be breathed it by other people...

A healthy human who has built resistance through being exposed to bacteria since birth has a pretty good immune system. Obviously I don't know about our resistance to this particular strain of coronavirus but as far as ordinary every day risks go, most of us are ok with normal thorough hand washing ."

This particular strain of the

Coronavirus type viruses is unique, so none of us should have any immunity that's developed through our lives.

I read today that it doesn't appear to be mutating very much, which is a great sign, if that continues. Unfortunately, as it's new, we have very little data upon it so far.

Vaccines may be tested on animals and then people by summer but obviously not all are guaranteed to work or be safe. They'd have to produce high volumes of it, so less likely available until late summer onwards.

Isolation is the safest precision . Then it's going to be scrupulously cleaning ourselves and minimal contact with others. Isolation of those who are infected.

I imagine it will be kept as an emergency if needed. And those doing it will decide. People take over bit by bit by bit so it’s unnoticeable and gradual and slow and inevitable.

If this hits her I worry about what is going to happen as she can't fight it off herself. She doesn't have the antibodies the average person does. And if there's no drug for this virus or medication that works then my fear is is going to be through the roof.

You mean super spreaders?

You do actually know what one is? Every single outbreak from the common cold to ebola has super spreaders. It is nothing more than somebody infected who happens to pass on to more people than usual.

It is just down to usually those who come in to contact with a large number of people instead of the average 1-3.

I can understand this. My sister was up until recently on oxygen through out the time. Her respiratory system will never be the same, so in those situations it is obviously a major concern. But for healthy people the prognosis is good. Best wishes for your friend x

Don't take this the wrong way but you do come across as overly paranoid about this.

Statistically I suspect you're more likely to get hit by a bus crossing the road, or in this weather have a tree fall on you. Worrying about every possible illness or cause of harm wont change the outcome.

There's nothing you can do to 100% protect yourself. Unless you have an airtight safe room filled with food and water that you can move into for the next six months.

But then the air filtration system might fail in a power cut and you could suffocate........
