Some people of Chinese appearance in the UK are reporting Coronavirus racism. An example being people preferring to stand than sit next to them.

Is this racism or something else. Formula 1 are planning to reschedule the Chinese Grand Prix. Surely that is sensible precaution and not racism ...

Treating someone in a markedly different way because of the colour of their skin and/ or facial features is racism per se. (leaving to one side the argument about sexual preference)

Travelling

The latter is not racism, its logical safety.

The former is certainly a form of racism. It's not racism based on hate, but irrational fear and uneducated logic. Like it is only people of Chinese decent that carry the virus.

Some will be using it as an excuse to hide their racism behind.

La la land

Those in my opinion are 2 different things. Avoiding all Chinese people in the UK just in case is wrong.

Avoiding bringing thousands of people together regardless of ethnicity in a country where a virus outbreak has started, and then would travel to another country in a few weeks time, common sense

My 10yr old grandson is half Chinese, he is experiencing racism in the classroom, other kids in the class have been told by their parents not to sit near him because he might have "that virus".

I am expecting it to happen to my 5yr old granddaughter any time soon.

It's so fucking awful that anyone is treated in this way, let alone a child.

Being of Chinese appearance does not mean that one is infectious.

I'm going to put it in such stark terms. Those avoiding those of Chinese appearance are assuming that those of Chinese appearance are more likely to be carrying a disease.

That is racist.

What's so special about Soho?

I wouldn't go there only because I don't like going in to London because, a) it's a pain in the arse and b) I hate London - probably because I used to have to travel to work there for 5 years.

I've still been partaking in Chinese food as usual.

I find it so sad that we have people, and yes I’m going to say, dumb enough to believe the press and then actively target an ethnic group based on that

No they are hateful, anyone who targets a child (or anyone for that matter) for no other reason than the colour of their skin, race, religion or sexuality is the lowest of the low. Why would this child be any more likely to have the virus than any of his classmates?

I know many educated people who don't ever watch the news.

But if someone watched the news and found that whole cities are in lockdown, pets taken off the streets, everyone wearing a mask, leaving a dead person on the streets because they are frightened of infection, flights cancelled, a manhunt for people recently returned, British people in two week quarantine, a thousand bed hospital built in a week, families allowed to shop only once a week etc etc etc..

Perhaps it might explain, understandably in my view, that some parents might have an itsy bitsy concern that manifests in act unpalatable to most of us..

Exactly so if parents are telling their children not to sit near him then no ifs or buts they’re being racist towards an innocent child and saying that they’re worried is no excuse

Being so thick that you refuse to find out facts yourself or be educated instead of spouting what you believe to be reality is a bad thing tome.

I've seen posts on social media suggesting people don't order anything from Wish or Ebay as if it's coming from China it might bring the virus with it.

That's just fucking stupid.

The virus has (as far as I understand) a 14 day incubation period.

When did anything from Ebay or Wish ever arrive in under 14 days?

The NHS has been briefed on handling dead bodies which can still transmit the virus. On BBC news they have just said that a case has arrived in UK from a country outside of China. If this mutates then it's worrying. Cases are doubling every 48 hours I think.

To be fair it is not the same.

Well yes it is, it is still the avoidance of a person of a specific skin tone.

However in this specific case there is a small amount of potential logic to their reasoning, even though it is highly uneducated.

Fear of a virus is blinding peoples already poor judgement. Ignoring the ability to do research, if somebody would usually have zero problem sitting next to somebody of Chinese decent but suddenly stops doing so because of their fear of this virus it is from an uneducated fear of the virus.

I'm not excusing the uneducated response people are having because it is hurtful regardless, but it is from a basis of fear of the virus, not hate for Chinese decent (though for some it is a convenient combo).

It's the first of the virus not the person..

I don't think it's racism but we all have different ideas what racism is..

I love Chinese food, culture, people but will lay low in London and not visit China town at the moment and certainly would not bring a child there.. I could not handle the guilt if the child got infected.. not because they are Chinese but because it's more likely that they travelled from an infected area..

And did she say why ? Or did you just infer what she did it for ? Because unless she said why, there is NO WAY that you know why.

When that look on her face says it all there is no need to ask. But what can I do unfortunately some people like this it’s not gonna stop me

So you don't know why she walked further down the train.

Thanks. "

old people are sensitive to illness more chance of catching death so if that was the reason i can see why but even the radio is banging out health warnings ffs

I would be worried if Pavarotti farted in a lift. He's been dead for 13 years. Zombie farts can kill!

I would rather better safe than sorry. Don’t wait until it can’t be contained to then try and contain it. Approach it as though it’s a major threat and nip it in the bud. It’s all very well saying don’t panic but it has started to spread quickly now, give it a few weeks of people travelling, half term holidays etc and it could be a very different story.

Any time someone sneezes or coughs near me I move away and I always have. You should see what I do at the docs I don’t care where you are from, if you have germs I don’t want you near me.

Yep absolutely. It's tiny numbers in the great scheme of things but like the other examples you've given it's the containment that stops these things becoming an epidemic, which is a strong possibility otherwise.

Exactly. Especially when you compare it to how many infected too. The virus itself is not an issue, it is less deadly than the flu. The fact of how contagious it is, is the issue. How easily it is to pass it on to the elderly, the young, and those with weakened immune systems is what the concern is about (also just large numbers of people getting ill at the same time would cripple so many systems and industries etc).

The death toll of the virus is minimal concern. The media use the death toll to grab attention is all.

The overall issue though, is that people (Chinese) showing no signs of symptoms are being avoided and looked down upon. The assumption they have the virus because they are Chinese, when in fact it is almost just as likely anyone could be infected at this point, race has nothing to do with it.

Not racism more xenophobia based on an irrational fear of contagion.

If the child was being discriminated against prior to the outbreak of the virus, then it would be racism. He is actually being discriminated against due to the (irrational) fear that he may be carrying a virus. A virus which if you watch news from China, actually looks terrifying.

To the people who are blasé.

You will moan that central government did little to save you or your family..

Wake up people.. this is serious and even if contained another virus is coming for us.. rem_mber.. WW1 killed 18 million and Spanish Flu 50 million.. and it was the young not the old who mainly died

Not race but location.. China is the epi centre.. that's why China Town sales down 20%

I wouldn't call it racism.

I would call it over reacting, people will be thinking that someone of chinese appearance has a higher percentage of coming into contact with someone who has recently been to china. Like all viruses it is infectious before symptoms appear.

I see it as no difference to people not travelling to salisbury after the poisonings. People wernt being anti salisbarians (ok i dont know what the local populace are known as)

Personally it wouldnt stop me from sitting next to or talking to a chinese person

There is a 14 day incubation period.. a person may look healthy but be contagious

I didn’t say race has anything to do with it. The fact is though it has come from China and, take for instance a university, lots of students are now back on campus after their Christmas break. If I was in that situation I would be nervous, no doubt. They can’t help being chinese any more than they can help it starting in China but facts are facts and people are nervous. Being cautious does not mean looking down on someone.

To be honest, I wouldn't sit next to anyone coughing and sneezing on the underground, no matter what their ethnicity. Regular use of alcohol hand gel and/or washing your hands whenever possible is the way to go.

Just treat everyone as if they're contagious and you can't be accused of discrimination.

Should they have a big white cross on their back?

Indeed. I mean if you are sitting on the underground train and somebody sits next to you and starts coughing, you don't have to jump up flailing your arms in the air and run off down the carriage screaming "we're doomed, we're doomed". Just take a long exhale, stand and move further down the carriage. If others think you a racist for doing this, then that's their problem.
