The name "cottage pie" was first used at the end of the 18th century. It was around that time that the poorer people of Britain, people who lived in cottages in the country, started using potatoes as an everyday food. Originally, a pie made with any kind of meat and mashed potato was called a "cottage pie".
In modern British English, the dish is usually called "cottage pie" if it is made with beef. If it is made with lamb it is usually called "shepherd's pie" (because a shepherd looks after sheep). |

Red sky at night - Shepherd's delight
Red sky in the morning - Shepherd's warning
Minced lamb topped with mashed potato - Shepherd's pie
Area of west London with a green, a theatre, a shopping centre and a football stadium - Shepherd's Bush

Anything a crispy topping can be considered a pie. In fact the whole dish used to be lined with mashed potato originally so it was like a full mash pie case.
This comes from the late 1700s when potatoes were a great cheap alternative to pastry, and that's where the cottage comes from too. As cottages were soon as cheap rural housing for the poor.

A good few years ago before I started to get more fluent in English I was in an airport lounge and some kids were playing what sounded like "ice pie". It was many years later that I discovered the truth. |

My nan and mum make something called cheese and potato pie which is basically just cheesy mash potato put in a dish with grated cheese on top and then grilled until the cheese goes crispy. It's rather deliscious but the pie part of the name causes some confusion. I guess it's a pie in the same way as shepherds and cottage pie though. |
