"You look good for your age."
Jump to: Newest in thread
Does this sound like a backhanded compliment to you? It always has the subtext in my mind of "you're old" and "I bet you looked a lot better 20 years ago" even though it's probably meant as a compliment.
We're certainly guilty of seeing people and thinking they look amazing for their age but we wouldn't dream of actually saying that to them.
I (Luke) would say somebody looks good without referencing their age. If somebody looks good, they look good, and that's it. Only if they bring up their age disparagingly might I say something like "Somebody 20 years younger would do well to look as good as you".
Have you ever said or been told "You look good for your age"? What fo you think of the statement? |

If you look good you look good. The age has nothing to do with it. TBH as I’ve got older I’ve become more secure in my skin, I also find someone who believes themselves to be sexy to be a real turn on; body shape and age doesn’t feature as much as it did when younger. |

I've just turned 40, I get told I look young for my age. But I dont see it as a back handed compliment, It hives me a little boost if anything, makes me smile. Doesnt make me big headed or anything but i take it as a compliment |

I’ve been told this numerous times. Someone even popped it into a verification recently.
I take it as a compliment, don’t feel or act like a stereotypical middle aged woman. I’m extremely comfortable in my own skin |

Only last night we were laughing about this. Nobody tells a 30 year old they look good for their age.
Its the idea that it's a surprise that you manage to look anywhere near presentable after 50 that makes me go . |

Yup. Got this a day or so ago. ‘Hats off to you - you look amazing for your age- I’d never thought of having a partner my own age before’ . The last bit is the Freudian glimpse to his psyche. |

Life's short and full of to many negative grumpy people so I'd happily take it as it was meant, smile and say thank you..

Take it as a compliment that’s what it is, I don’t find it offensive at all, you wouldn’t be happy if they said wow your old? Thought you were much older than that, you must have had a large paper round ... just saying |

Some of us over 50 look like we've been through the headge in all directions.
But how are we supposed to give a compliment to ladies.
What ever we say or do is wrong. |

That's not true, a sincere compliment at the right time usually goes down well
It's the false ones where they know you're only trying to get in their knickers that are wrong |

Although people mean it well, it's an empty compliment. Dismissive to the person and boringly puts the emphasis on looks.
My ego is secretly stroked by it but mostly I see it for what it is .. a shallow gesture.

When it comes down to it I think we all know that it's intended to be complimentary but what I don't understand is why an older woman is supposed to be happy that a compliment is qualified by adding "for your age" but a larger woman can be insulted by the addition of "for your size".
If you want to compliment someone just pay the compliment, don't give with one hand and take away with the other. |

I so rem_mber the first time my age became part of the discussion. Had a health check as I used to work offshore at times and at the end the doctor started with the usual "you're in good health" (those were the days) and then "for someone your age". Right then you realise you have started the second week of your holiday! |

I'm on too much medication for someone of my age.

Yeah, it's like when people say "you're so pretty... For a big girl!". If only I had a pound...
Once at a weight loss club meeting I was told "you have such a pretty face - you're going to get all the boys once you lose the weight!" . Really had to fight the urge to go "bitch, I already do!". In fact I was actually heading off to a third date right after the meeting... |

I think it's a very fair comment, we're not Benjamin Buttons...it's a fact of life that things usually deteriorate with age, so if someone weathers it well then it's a really nice and quite accurate compliment. |

I don't see it as a backhanded compliment, simply a compliment.
Though when chatting I usually get "you don't look old enough to have a son that age"
At 46 if some people believe me to be mid 30s, I certainly don't mind.
I would add that, the chances are that I did look better 20 years than I do now I was certainly much slimmer. |

I'd say it's more a case of too many insecure people throwing around insults when someone utters an opinion different to theirs. |

"I'm always getting messages telling me that I "look good for my age" or "no way are you 49".
I actually take it as a compliment, even though I know they're only trying to get in my knickers! "
Surely nobody's trying to get into your knickers at your age!
That's a joke of course, but I think there are ways of phrasing these things. Saying there's no way you're 49 doesn't necessarily imply there is anything wrong with being or looking 49. Saying you look good for your age still has an implication to me that could look better if only you were younger.
It's like there's a compliment there and then suddenly it all tails off as you get to the "for your age" bit. It sounds like you don't actually look good but I can get an upside if I apply this criteria to my assessment. |
