It was only a matter of time. And not being funny with the heavily dense population of the world, its mother nature telling us to fuck off as were killing her world.

I'm sorry for all those affected but it's like the film doomsday, heavily packed places and a virus ravages the population.

But given that good old fashioned flu kills literally hundreds of thousands a year, on the great scheme of things ... it it a biggie?

Discuss.

I think its down to the extremity of the virus strain. Flu viruses attack the both respiratory and immune systems. This one acts much quicker when it sets in. Two week incubation period though. Any of us could have it already and not know.

My suspicion is that countries with reasonably decent health care systems should be ok. The problem will really develop if the virus gets into countries with less well established health care.

It will all depend if it becomes a pandemic flu or not Spanish flu in 1920 killed 50 million possibly more. If the coronavirus did the same with the increased world population as it is now, you can see why it's a scary prospect

Earthquakes are caused by the movement of tectonic plates. Not a morris dancing festival.

The tremblor that his Mosquito lake in Alaska didn't kill anyone but then the area is sparsely populated.... maybe the 300 inhabitants had some friends over.

It is a scary prospect. There were some 500 million people infected. So if my figures and your figures are correct then approx one tenth of those infected died.

Some stats put the deaths at nearer 20 million.

There's also arguments that say a lot of deaths attributed to Spanish Flu were not actually from the flu but ANY respiratory death.

Medicine and sanitation has advanced a lot.

Still.......... Here's hoping there's a quick end to it.

2009-2010 Mexican Flu, Swine Flu or what ever you want to call it killed 300,000-600,000

Thousand worldwide.

And everybody was saying the same thing then as you lot are saying now, and comparing it with the 1918 Spanish Flu.

Flu kills thousands every year directly or indirectly, 27 people died from Flu in the UK in December 2019 alone.

It's either from bats or snakes; neither has been confirmed as the cause. All they know is the fish market in Wuhan is looking like ground zero.

The difference with this between other outbreaks like SARS or MERS is that it is RNA - which means the virus blends with its host's DNA, and can mutate rapidly.

There isnt a cure, for any coronavirus out there. You can only treat symptoms and pneumonia is very tough to treat, many people have it and have had it for years and dont even know it so contracting this virus would make you very vulnerable.

I can only hope they treat this like they did H1N1 and they just might. It's the only way to keep everyone safe.

The fatality rate will rapidly increase if it becomes a full worldwide epidemic. Of the 10,000 or so cases over 3000 are in intensive care. It would soon overwhelm many countries medical facilities so the treatment of serious cases would rapidly decline. It all depends on how infectious it is..the Chinese city at the centre of the outbreak the authorities soon locked it down minimising the spread and exposure, how do you see such happening in the uk.

No one seems to realise that the Coronavirus reporting is a geopolitical campaign to demean and isolate China; it is weaponized hysteria.

Meanwhile influenza spreads around the world in yearly outbreaks, resulting in about three to five million cases of severe illness and about 290,000 to 650,000 deaths. There are something like 30,000 to 60,000 flu deaths in the USA every year - I see no hysterical reporting on that. Quelle suprise.

I'm not panicking though. Mother nature will always find a way and we as humans are killing this planet. Global warming ect. Look at the rate in which the planet is heating up and the ice is melting. Polar bears will be extinct as a result of humans.

Animals were here long before we were. We came along and got too smart too quickly.

But the magnetic poles reverse every so often and leave devastation which will wipe out about 70% of the population anyway. Plus the sun will die put leaving humans royally buggared.

But yeah, I'm not panicking. Not trying to cause a panic either. Merely staying mother nature will always find a way to try and restore the balance we fucked up.

"

I agree but don't feel too guilty. We are animals too. Now we believe we are contributing to decline we can act but it won't make any difference.

The planet won't die. Mankind will just eradicate itself. Or maybe a new genus...... will multiply. We won't know. We'll be dead but not of flu I suspect.

On the news there were loads of people wearing masks in Cambridge.

"It was only a matter of time. And not being funny with the heavily dense population of the world, its mother nature telling us to fuck off as were killing her world.

I'm sorry for all those affected but it's like the film doomsday, heavily packed places and a virus ravages the population.

Calm down just a little. For your own sake as well as for the sake of those that flip when someone starts a panic.

Over the centuries virus' that begin in animals cross to humans and kill hundreds or thousands..... This virus will do its best to spread. A bit like Sapiens slowly eradicating all other animals.

It will run its course and scientists will eventually find a vaccine.

Yes take precautions and yes hope you don't get infected but nothing has killed more people that traffic accidents.

Why not start a panic about that instead?"

This pretty much..

The number of children who die every day in other far away places because of treatable infections, no access to clean water etc is massively higher than this particular virus..

"No one seems to realise that the Coronavirus reporting is a geopolitical campaign to demean and isolate China; it is weaponized hysteria.

Meanwhile influenza spreads around the world in yearly outbreaks, resulting in about three to five million cases of severe illness and about 290,000 to 650,000 deaths. There are something like 30,000 to 60,000 flu deaths in the USA every year - I see no hysterical reporting on that. Quelle suprise."

I completely disagree and find it troublesome that anyone would have this very unsubstantial opinion.

Every year, health care agencies and the world health organization determines which flu strains are high strain and markets different vaccines to be made and distributed to all countries around the world, of which are free of charge. Everyone knows this as flu season; as well there are handwashing stations, wipes, countless advertisements and articles directed to the public to keep sanitary and avoid contact. How is this not "hype" and how is this not "globalized attention" that is not centralized to any country, region or geopolitical climate. It has taken years and years and years of effort to even garner the attention it needs and now it is finally making sense to people - vaccines, handwashing, staying home when you are sick saves fucking lives. And if that not hyped up enough I do not know what is.

The populations in china or southeast Asia far outweigh any population centers anywhere else on the planet; millions of people travel through Hong Kong, for instance, who will have all been within a mile of some of the most famous fish markets in the world. Those fish markets are linked up to other markets across China with merchants who can easily travel back and forth daily across that coastline. One cough from one infected person can easily hit over a thousand persons within minutes before it dissipates into the humidity. Those persons infected, just one has to be on a junk boat to Hong Kong. And that person will arrive in one of the most densely populated areas in the world. And that person will cough.

We should care about it being in China. As they ship everything, almost every fucking thing in their daily lives, at some point will make it's way though those ports of call in China. So it isn't just mass hysteria to demonize China; Amazon, Sony, Apple, PepsiCo just to name a few would be bankrupt within days if they could not get their ships to move out of there.

The common flu is more detrimental to human life

any virus spreads and causes pandemic in china/asia as they live & work in cramped proximity from each other and typically have very low immune systems.

Its just another virus/flu which effects the weak, elderly & ill and marginally effects anyone else.

There's a pretty good docuseries on Netflix called Pandemic for those interested in the facts.

The reason why the Spanish flu killed so many is there were soldiers returning from the war spreading the disease. Back then air travel wasn't as common. Today we have much more travel and a global population of 7.7 billion.

On top of this, particularly in the US hospitals have been closing down because of budget cuts and are already stretched.

If this gets out of hand don't expect treatment.

Google says 2% death rate!

So - just like ‘normal’ flu - not really worth losing much sleep over then! "

Well the Spanish flu had a mortality rate of 2.5% and killed 50 million people. It would be interesting to know what the ratio of hospitals & doctors to population is now compared to back then, given the closure of hospitals and clinics.

There are now 17 000 recorded infections meaning there are probably about 100 000 actual infections which means this virus is now impossible to contain.

I don't know how mortality rates are calculated but this is from the New York Times...

"The death toll from the new coronavirus has exceeded that of the severe acute respiratory syndrome outbreak in 2002 and 2003 in mainland China. But the number of people who have recovered nationwide has also risen in recent days, suggesting that the new virus’s fatality rate is relatively low.

China’s Health Commission reported on Sunday that there were 475 recoveries and 361 deaths nationwide. During the SARS outbreak, 349 people died in mainland China."

Looks more like 43% to me but my maths is crap...

Is this really a swinger site?

Because if it is and you have multiple sexual partners, you should be worried about STDs rather than a virus you have almost zero chance of catching.

Unprotected intercourse, oral/genital and oral/oral contact- all can transmit STDs. Are you absolutely certain about the sexual history of all your partners?

How about I take an interest in what I take an interest in. You do likewise and neither of us tell each other what we 'should' be interested in?

Mheh, just stock up on Dettol wipes, it states on the packaging that is kills Human Coronavirus.

The more cynical of me would wonder how long this dangerous new virus has been around if Dettol wipes can kill it.

How to you get zero chance of catching? With 17000 reported case the general rule thumbs says there are 100 000 infected people. The ability to isolate this and contract people down the chain becomes an impossibility. The number of virus cases doubles every 5 days...

"Mheh, just stock up on Dettol wipes, it states on the packaging that is kills Human Coronavirus.

The issue is that is is a new strain. It is an unknown, it doesn't automatically mean that detol can kill it. It may have mutated to be immune to detol.

It is just highly contagious, and the more heavily populated areas it will spread quickly. Which is exactly what we have been seeing.

With that also said, it doesn't mean that detol won't work when cleaning surfaces.

Bottom line is generally the only people at risk of death are the same people who are at risk from all other diseases and viruses - babies and children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.

Slight potential risk to already healthy people (just like with most other viruses) is that the actual virus won't kill you but other infections etc while your immune system is resting after fighting off corona.

Business as usual people!

Shutting down an entire section of China and building a 1000 bed hospital in two weeks isn't a distraction technique, neither is quarantining returning people.

Totally agree with this.

To put an entire city on lock down, countries close borders, build two new hospitals in as many weeks and warn all british subject to return home at the earliest possible opportunity is alarming,

“ especially at the rate at which” the virus is spreading through, infecting and killing people in mainland China.

( when that tell you not to be concerned).

BE CONCERNED, “ Be very concerned “.

In the over the course of a year World wide, of which is a massive space.

In less than a month in that region, over 20.000 infected and around 400 dead and the rate of infection doubling on a daily basis.

Wake up people, I keep hearing x amount of people die every year from flue virus.

“ They have a cure for that and measures in place “.

This virus no measures in place and no vaccine for at least 18 months.

So when they tell you not to be concerned,

“ be concerned be very concerned “.

I'm with you on this one. People seem to think that it's:

A) Not coming to the UK

B) That it isn't a dangerous virus.

Several problems with that.

They are quoting a mortality rate which is something one only does at the end of an epidemic. CFR is a much more accurate representation of how lethal this flu is. Then the figure goes from 2% to 18%. This figure will not get better once hospitals overflow.

With 60 000 cases it is now impossible to contain and in so many countries one can't just ban flights from every country.

So people who poo pooing this virus and calling concern over it "scaremongering", need to consider the maths and the extent of how bad this could get.
