If they're riding side by side taking up the whole lane and not letting cars pass I suddenly find that my windscreen needs a good wash when I finally get to pass them. (I cycle too quite frequently but I'm courteous to car drivers and try not to get in the way!) |

But the dont pay a road tax there is no checks on a bike to ensure its road safe my law and no insurance to if a cyclist smashes into my car they dont have to pay insurance. So surely on that note they dont gave as much rights to the roads as a car van lorry etc |

Oh god....this argument is as old as the hills but to put it bluntly if a cyclist knocks into you and damages your vehicle then they are liable but you as a driver of a large piece of metal have a responsibility to not hit cyclists, pedestrians or dogs because you will hurt them more than you will be hurt by them. Get a life and do something useful instead of getting pissy about being a minute or two late. |

I'm considerate to the give them time and move around them but last year while I was at a traffic lights a cyclist came along side my car scrapped down the side of my car then turned and cycled down a footpath and way leaving me with £300 bill for the respray to my car. This us why I think now I get wound up by it |

Vehicle tax is based on emissions, so cyclists don't pay it and nor do electric cars as far as I know. Do you have objections to them using the roads? Cyclists also tend not to cause anywhere near the extent of accidents, major damage, deaths, etc that drivers cause. And in an accident it's far more likely that they'll be the ones with the written off bike and injuries than the person in the vehicle. |

I think the only answer to this argument would be more cycle lanes but there are also a lot of cyclists that obey the rules of the road(traffic lights/crossings etc)
In London it was a nightmare, they would be on the roads but ignore traffic lights or jump on the pavements and expect pedestrians to move for them. There were cycle lanes everywhere so really no excuse. My daughter was knocked down by a cyclist who blamed us for standing at a pedestrian crossing!

Cyclists don't pay road tax but then neither do car owners, it's excise duty. A lot do pay insurance, I've there different policies for club, solo and off road along with listed item on house insurance, 3rd party cover and legal claim cover etc, etc
As for two abreast that comes straight from the highway code and is not only legal but recommended for cyclists safety. It also recommends dropping to single file on narrow country roads with the caveat, when it's safe to do so. With some motorists sitting right up your chuff two abreast, single file isn't any safer for them so why would they move? |

I follow your reasoning but it is slightly flawed.
Road tax is for motorised vehicles to use the road.
Road tax is not for motorists to top trump the rights of a cyclist.

It’s easier and safer to overtake four cyclists that are two abreast in a pack than four spread out in single file.

The roads are paid for from central taxation not vehicle tax, that means that in many cases they are paid for by people who don't even own a car! |

You get bad cyclists and bad car drivers, I don’t drive be do ride on the road and I’ve been knocked off by a car and had a fair few near misses.
Maybe it should be part of the driving test that they should have to cycle x amount of miles around their local area. Just to see how vulnerable and dangerous it can be when you’re on a bike with cars making close passes at high speed or pulling out on you. |

NO its not. How can it be easier thats like saying jordans a virgin. Theyre a nuisance and put their life on the line doing it. Well, you sound pleasant.
Another pesky cyclist here, so no support for maiming people with cars and tractors from me. I got knocked off by a BMW driving arsehole last year. Overtook me at speed, then turned left across my path. Sprained my wrist and took a fair amount of skin off various parts of me. He ended up having to tip up several thousand pounds and got himself a criminal record, so, y'know, just slow down a bit and give us some room, eh? |

Absolutely all for cycling, better for health, better for the environment & better for the bank balance ... just think drivers have to understand they are in control of a machine capable of killing! Not a fan of bad manners so do think cyclists should think of others too ... but most of the complaints to me always seem very petty |

I had the experience of having to get out of my car in central London one evening to the site of a woman in the road with her bicycle lying by her side.
It was one of the worst moments in my life.
It was 10:30 at night. She had no helmet, no lights, dark clothing and dark hair.
I could tell the police at the 5 lane junction every car and bicycle that was waiting at the lights, including outfits but I could not tell you where the woman came from.
I drive over 20000 miles a year, mostly in London and use my wing mirrors to check for motorbikes and cyclists all the time as they weave in and out.
She was taken to hospital and I had to wait to see if I was going to be prosecuted.
Turns out I would never have seen her because she came the wrong way up the one way street and cut a red light. So she had hit me and not the other way.
I can still see the contempt in the face of the paramedic looking at me.
I have no problem with cyclists just dress to protect yourself and be seen by others. |

Length of a bike roughly 2m, now look at two cyclists in a line. Bit of space between them, maybe 4m. Thats a total of 8m distance to overtake. How is that not worse than overtaking two that are only taking up 2m of road. You’d still be going to the other side of the road to over take.
If you’re struggling to get past them safely in your tractor maybe stick to fields ? |

"Road and freeride dh cyclist here... no issues allways give them space..
although if they're riding two a breast i dont give them space... those are the type of cyclists i like to call arseholes.
It’s easier and safer to overtake four cyclists that are two abreast in a pack than four spread out in single file.
And yes I cycle/drive a lot too
NO its not. How can it be easier thats like saying jordans a virgin. Theyre a nuisance and put their life on the line doing it. I live in the countryside, when im in my tractor they hog the road most drop back to single file which is fine but theres the lycra clad cunty ones that proceed to hog the road and ultimately put their life in danger.... as my tractor isnt stopping.
So you saying ‘my tractor isn’t stopping’ is your way of saying you’d happily knock someone off a bike?
Try driving one theyre hard to stop on a country road when you go round a twisty and theres a bellend riding two a breast. I ride, i ride with southern derbyshire cycling club and have done for 15 years we ride single file and get out twice a week for a 30 mile ride... we arnt dickheads we cycle single file.
If your tractor is hard to stop, drive slower
clueless. "
Let's go back to the highway code again, the one that recommends cyclists cycle two abreast for their safety. It also states that as the driver of a vehicle you have to be able to stop in the distance ahead you can see to be clear, if you can't you're driving too fast no matter what the machine is you're driving.
Now tell us again about who's clueless |

I think it's a fair assumption that few motorists that complain about cyclists riding 2 abreast give them 3 foot of space when overtaking them if they are riding single file |

"I had the experience of having to get out of my car in central London one evening to the site of a woman in the road with her bicycle lying by her side.
That's awful, glad things worked out for you in the end |

Up on them there hills |
You burn more fuel crawling along behind them, the should be made to pay emissions tax.
In a serious note, our village has had the tour de France, within a mile, the tour de Yorkshire through it once, with it scheduled to come through again
It attracts a lot of cyclists and clubs into the area.
Think the local recreation field (for the children of the village) is taken over four time a year by cycling events.
The event are not a problem, it’s the officious official knobs in high viz jackets who get up my nose.
L is diabetic, and needed a sugar drink fairly quickly at one of these events and one tried, I mean tried to stop me getting to a local shop.
A land rover takes some stopping. |

My eldest cousin was hit and killed on his bike when he was 18. The guy drove off too. The contempt shown for cyclists is often pretty worrying.
Personally I always try to give them as much space as possible and hate having to pass them without the other side of the road being clear, even slowly. Some of the worst moments for me as a driver have been on poorly lit roads behind kids on bikes wearing all black who keep weaving across the road. I once had two on a bike with one on the handlebars and as they were dressed all in black and it was at night I didn't see them until I was close enough for my headlights to light them up. It was horrible. Even once I passed them I was worrying about them. |
