One of the greatest places on earth.
Apparently they are now limiting how much alcohol you can buy if you’re with your kids - two alcoholic drinks only.
Thoughts? |

I actually think that's a good idea. I've been to pubs where kids are left to run riot while parents get d*unk. 2 drinks are plenty I wouldn't have d*unk more than that with my child present. If they want more they can get a baby sitter |

Ok, Wetherspoons for an early aperitif, and then we'll properly do Valentines Day over some Espresso Martinis at a nearby fancy bar
I'm paying... |

This. Capping drinks for people with kids is something you shouldn't even need to enforce, it should be the done thing |

I think its sensible. I have kids. I go in spoons. We go for an occasional meal. I wouldn't drink past 2 with the kids around and its not a place they should be in for extended periods of time.
Monitoring drink intake may be more difficult though. |

I think it's a good plan to have a reasonable limit, it's a shame that some parents can't be trusted to limit themselves really. I worked in a pub years and years ago, and we'd have some regulars who'd rock up at 11 when the pub opened, kids in tow, and be there drinking until they got kicked out in the evening once kids weren't allowed. I thought the kids were a bit feral but looking back they were just bored shitless poor buggers. |

This story has been kind of misreported and been twisted into some form of 'nanny state' piece.
In reality it has been a law for a very long time that it is both illegal to be d*unk in charge of children and to be d*unk on licensed premises.
Most pubs have a policy on adults with children, all the pub in question did is put the policy up in writing.
It's not a new thing nor any different from any other licensed establishment. |

Some time ago, I worked in a pub and there were regulars that would often bring thier children, it's not a healthy way for a child to grow up.
As great as this idea is, the fact is, if they want to drink and spoons won't serve them more, they will move onto the next pub, so ideally, this is something that should be done by all, not just one. |

Fantastic idea.
Parents are supposed to be capable of supervising their children.
Well done to Wetherspoons for taking some responsibility.
Seems these days that Mothers Day means, The adults get pissed having a pub meal.
Seems these days Christmas means, the adults get pissed all through the day.
Seems Valentines means we get pissed in the pub and then go home. |

I guess it depends how old the kids are, 2 should be enough for most kids to be fair unless they're much older

My local wetherspoons is fantastic. Clean, good service, very good menu and good prices.
Maybe we should all admit that it's the people who use the place. Not the place itself.
There's a lot of snobbery attached to W'spoons with people looking down on those that use them. I like it a lot. |

Whilst I agree with the sentiment, I think common sense should be used. I've worked in the pub trade for a long time and often see families come in for a bite to eat and one or other parent may have a couple of drinks.
If for example a football match was on and the kids were happy out watching it then I would have absolutely no issue with continuing to serve them.
It also depends on the age of the kids, volume of drink being consumed etc. To refuse them a 3rd drink is just too black and white for me but I absolutely don't condone parents who abuse alcohol around kids.
Not too many Wetherspoons over here in Ireland but I did enjoy them any time I visited them. |

I agree.
Whilst many may see it as an erosion of their personal freedoms, this has been law for a very long time.
If people 'need' to drink with their kids around, they're free to do so at home.
The policy exists in pretty much every on site retailer for the comfort of all patrons. I worked in the industry for 20 years and have enacted those policies many times. |

My kids have been to the states during term time and my eldest spent a week SCUBA diving with me last June. The schools around here tend to be ok as long as you don't take the piss and the kids otherwise have good attendance. |

Well they'll just keep moving to different pubs. Two drinks in everyone lol

What a load of bloody snowflakes
When I was a kid before kids were even allowed into pubs....I'd be sitting in the pub garden from 12 to 3 and then 5.30 till 10 every Saturday and Sunday...this would be in all weathers.... all I'd have to keep me company was a packet of crisps and a bottle of cola with a straw....
Never did me any harm...and if my old man was too pissed...I'd sit on his lap and steer the car home |

I see Wetherspoons now has a two-drink limit for customers who have kids with them. As opposed to the 10 pints needed for their customers to make the little bastards in the first place. |

I had a chat withe a friend the other day about the old 'spoons' and I actually think it's quite a positive place, but I would say it depends where you live.
Where I live in Devon and Cornwall we have small towns where different generations of a family can be on a night out, separately, however the local 'spoons' acts as neutral territory where families can bump into each other, have a laugh and a joke, some may eat (okay it's not the best but it is cheap and cheerful) and then go on their separate ways. The price point allows this, the pubs tend to be large and so the layout allows this.
With so many of our local pubs closing (before the spoons came along) it has reintroduced a little life into tired old towns and dare I say it, some relaxed social interaction between different generations. I know that this is not the same in some of the more urban parts of our country, but in mainly rural areas it actually feels like we are getting a tradition back. (the pub in my village in Devon was always full of different generations drinking together).
I think it's important to note that Wetherspoons are only enforcing the drink limit to comply with a law laid down in 1902 where it is illegal to be d*unk in charge of a child under the age of 7. In my local village pub, due to the close nature and small community, this didn't need to be explicitly stated as societal judgement would do this.
I actually applaud the introduction of this chain (and many would call me a snob), so I think fair play for not just trying to offload alcohol without a little bit of corporate responsibility |

Well said.
As I pointed out above; it's a non story aimed at inflaming a 'nanny state' debate. In reality every retailer adheres to this law. |

Many years ago my partner at the time and I had arranged to meet friends that we hadn't seen for a year in one of the Spoons, they were on route somewhere and we only had the afternoon to have a few beers and catch up.
We took our kids with us and his wife and our partners were driving .. all good so far.
We meet and have 2 rounds and we go to order a third with food all round and were refused. Even explaining that our partners were not drinking it was a no go.
We went to a different table and my partner ordered up meals and drinks for them and the kids ... no problem.
However, when my mate and I went to get some beers we were refused. We explained that we were no longer with the kids and that our partners were having food and then leaving they still refused to serve us.
Needless to say we cancelled the food and got our money back and went to the pub next door who were more than happy to sell us a further 6 beers each.
The guy who owned the pub next door said that he loved their Corporate policy as he could make common sense decisions on who was responsible or not.
He made a fortune from families who came in and returned each weekend for months. Couples recognised someone with sense and they also came in at night and with their mates when they were child free.
Lessons to be learned on how to be compliant with the law and not enforce policies to the letter. |

Personally I don't sit in pubs and get pissed with my children .. in the summer maybe, outdoors so they can play in a beer/play garden.
Or a pop n crisps stop on a walk.
I don't want to be told what to do AND I like the idea of discouraging hanging out in pubs with the kids while the adults have a sesh.

I heard this talked about on Jeremy vine yesterday. It was one landlord that took it upon themselves to put this rule in.
Spoons have said that they will allow people to drink sensibly and there's no actual limit.

I have zero idea why any man would want a place where women are not allowed
Personally a Male only environment would be a repellant
My only thought is
Men only establishments should be permitted so right thinking men and women could avoid and be separated from backward thinking men |

"I have been in many of their pubs. I like the fact that there is no music or pool tables. Would prefer if he got rid of the fruit machines too. Some are very good and some not so good. I actually prefer pubs that are not dog friendly and won't eat in pubs where dogs are allowed behind the bar or in the kitchen. I used to enjoy my old working man's club where women were not allowed in except on a Saturday and that was in the lounge bar only and not the saloon bar
The 1980s are over
I am all for women only bars too.. and mixed bars and bars where you can smoke if you want to. But there should be a place for men only, women only, and mixed. And before anyone mentions no gypsies or Irish. I am only talking about the sexes not race or religion
I have zero idea why any man would want a place where women are not allowed
Personally a Male only environment would be a repellant
My only thought is
Men only establishments should be permitted so right thinking men and women could avoid and be separated from backward thinking men "
Perfect solution..
Nobody should force anybody to go there...
I remember talking about pigeon racing over a pint and it was great.. perhaps it's forward thinking.. womem may enjoy women only spaces too |

Yes they do. Sometimes you just want a night out with only the girls, and no male interruption |

Aw man I’d love a bar with no men
Sounds funny till the implications are intelligently thought through

That's why my forward thinking lady friends and I went to non straight clubs
I cannot imagine all girls in a girl only place are pleasant to spend time with just as not all humans defined as men are abhorrent stereotypes
Again all I see is simplistic poor reasoning stereotyping and cliche |

I don't think his business particularly relies on European imports or exports to be fair. His beers are mainly produced in the UK using British ingredients.. to be fair he has brought life back to many old disused city centre buildings.. I think he spoke as he saw it and he is entitled to his opinion as you are too |

"This story has been kind of misreported and been twisted into some form of 'nanny state' piece.

My son and daughter are coppers, what’s wrong with that? It’s a job like all others. You get burgled who do you call? Them. You got no power in your house, who do you call? Me.
It really is that simple |

"I think it is a sad state of affairs that parents have to be told they should stop drinking when they are with their kids"
Sadly, it's a sign of the times. I've worked in Hotels and Licensing for over 40 years and over these decades I have witnessed a sea change in attitudes.
Nowadays, it's almost the done thing to drag the kids along to whatever pub, restaurant or similar place, and allow the kids to run riot and treat the place like a playground!
There's little or no control by the parents, let alone the simple concept of respect for other customers etc who usually want a meal or drink in peace.
Plus, there are the dangers of staff having to avoid boisterous kids, whilst carrying plates of food, or drinks. If an accident occurs, the parents are more often on the defence of their little "darlings" and heap retribution on the poor and usually blameless staff.
Add in alcohol to the parents, and the whole idea of being in control of themselves, let alone their awful badly behaved offspring, goes totally out of the window. |

Tim Martin...brilliant.
Saved many fantastic buildings.
Tries to keep prices down.
Bats for GREAT BRITAIN !
Staff are great in our local branch.
I don't want to see your snotty nosed kids running around.
Or your farting dogs under my feet.
It's a pub...not a F**** nursery in a zoo.

I don't have kids but as from Liverpool you could easily go to 5 spoons and have 2 in each
Hard to control that mind, even go out give it 30 mins come back in, get served by a different member of staff! |

"i wont drink in spoons out of principle...
the owner is a bit of a tit... and they don't pay their staff very well"
Yea, terrible guy and business.
Each week, Martin invites around 20 Wetherspoons managers to a meeting in Watford to discuss ideas for improving the business that are 'from the shop floor, rather than the board'.
He also visits around 15 Wetherspoons pubs each week – he spent Christmas Day at two of his Devon pubs – and incentivises staff by paying out half the company's post-tax profits as a monthly bonus. Last year, his 40,000 employees split a bonus pot of around £50million.
He has also handed free shares in the company to around 10,000 staff since he founded Wetherspoons 41 years ago, and pays pub staff on average ten per cent more than the minimum wage.
