Ok folks, I'm 49 started to retrain at the boxing gym, shed a couple of stone and getting towards where I'd like to be.

One thing...apart from being the oldest guy training, I'm the only one without a tattoo. It seems to be compulsory to have one!

Not having one doesn't bother me, but I wondered what public opinion is about getting one done at this age...?!

I had my first one when I was 42. Age shouldn’t stop you, just depends if there’s a tattoo you actually want.

But don’t get one just so you’re not the only guy in the gym without one.

What I've found is there is only one difference between people who have tattoos and people who don't

and that is people with tattoos, don't care if you have one or not

I'm seriously considering a tattoo for myself. My first. I have a variety of things I'm considering. Other people's views on whether I should have tattoos or not don't factor into it in the slightest.

Ooh that's not true. Those with tattoos can be incredibly judgemental about my lack of tattoos.

Thanks for the replies. Just to clarify, it's not peer pressure or wanting to fit in. I'll have one if I want one. I was just curious about the age of "acceptance" for an "older" guy to have one and at what age it becomes a little silly - nothing worse than seeing a mature guy trying to look hip.

The tattoo will be with you till you take your last breath.

You could be 90 with the tattoo

I'm sure its a blanket statement. But personally the only people who have criticised my tattoos are people who don't have any

OP I'm the same age as you and started having tattoos many moons ago ..Now everyman and his dog seems to have one ..Be different and leave your body as nature intended. I don't regret any of my tattoos ..Just remember this though. A tattoo is for life not just for Christmas. Choose wisely as what may seem cool now won't be on another 10 years. Trends change and so do tattoos. I'm sure there's a few on here that regret not putting a little thought into theirs.

There's plenty worse than that, trust me.

I'd like to get a tattoo but I couldn't bear to go without swimming while it healed. I know exactly what I would have and where too, I even know who I want to do it.

If anybody thinks I'm an old bird trying to look hip because I want a tattoo I'm about it

doesn't appeal to me either, are you of the mindset its cool to have a tattoo, i don’t think you are otherwise you'd have one by now, don't be influenced by others or by the culture of cool

I don't know about that, I have tattoos and I regularly take the piss out of a mate who had a massive tasmanian devil holding a beer and a joint done back in '99 and still has it now

It goea both ways, those without tatts also judge some of us for having them. Although i may have taken it to the extreme

I have many tattoos, I love tattoos when done nicely, however it does not make me less likely to like someone if they do not have any.

Do it if you really want 1, dont worry about if others have them or not

LOL, I don't want anything I was just sampling the general mood on age and tattoos. Whether I get the half sleeve done is more a matter of time and getting my design complete, rather than what others think of it. Thanks for the reply anyway x

Mate,

I started getting my leg sleeve done at 51 and love it.

Age is a mere number and still fit as a fiddle.

Go for it

In terms of age and tattoos, if you were considering one, I'd definitely talk to an artist about placement. Skin may or may not be more forgiving.

But, you know, tattoos *are* cool

If you want one then go for it but only do it if it’s what you want to do I took my mum last Mother’s Day for her first tattoo and she is 62. I asked my tattooist which the oldest person he’s had in to have their first tattoo and he said it was a 90yo woman who got a horny devil tattooed on her bum for her birthday

It’s your body, your choice. Get one of you really really want one. Not because the majority say so. I have 19 but they’re completely different to what anyone else has and where they have them.
