No, we stay there to overtake the half dead in the slow lane and only go into the fast lane to piss off the Audis who think 72 mph is good for the fast lane. Fair's fair.

"I'm perplexed at what really pulled the driving standards here down to such a low level. "

Some of it is this so called slow/fast lane thing. Once you overtake everyone should be in the inside lane.

People belive its safer to stay in the middle, even when they are a hazard.

People are sheep, they see others do it and do the same.

Poor driver awareness and skills.

Meh

No one is perfect, and we forget lessons as we get older and get in a routine.

It is also not illegal to undertake as long as you are not breaking the speed limit & not constantly lane stopping.

I do it all the time on less busy motorways & times.

Often they are at their worst when on dual carriageways, as they totally curtail road progress by crawling in the overtaking lane - and can do this for miles, seemingly unaware of the huge queue behind them.

They must feel comfortable, having a clear empty lane to themselves

Problem with all widened motorways (4 lane) like sections of the M25 is that they didn’t ban HGV’s from the third lane & they should have done..

Yes

Being serious - I’ve had a few conversations with people who don’t see any problem with it. IMO, it’s at best very inconsiderate, and often somewhat dangerous - it’s easy to get boxed in because you can’t get out into the middle to overtake. They’re just kinda “hanging there”.

Add to that the fact that when it’s clear, you have to undertake them or perform an elaborate manoeuvre across all the lanes to get past.

Is undertaking illegal? I always thought the police would pull you for it. However, people on motoring forums say it isn’t actually.

I know it’s ok when lanes of traffic are slowing.

I *think* I know it's not. But it's not even a case of pulling out infront of them... if I'm 30, 50, 200m ahead of them before I change lanes again, they are irrelevant to my driving.

No, I think they were always the same, possibly even getting better.

I wasn't taught any motorway driving, and given I lived at least an hour from any Motorway, could never have done so realistically.

Can we also kill truck drivers that decide its a good idea to overtake the truck in front driving at 55, while they're flat out at 55.5mph, uphill, fully laden on a dual carriagway or 2 lane motorway during busy periods....which takes about 2 miles to complete?

It will save me the hassle of pulling in front of them at the bottom of the next hill and gradually reducing my speed to around 50 in revenge

I agree, the driving test is way harder than it was back in the day. That said i think like everything these days there is a degree of teaching by rote, rather than getting people to think for themselves. As a driver you need to be able to think not just sit behind a wheel and follow a process

Definitely not dangerous in road works at the speed limit for that section.

Sitting at 80-85mph in the middle lane is not also a problem. Sitting at 70 or lower in the middle lane with nothing on the inside lane is without doubt poor driving.

Tuning out and sitting in the middle, especially on cruise control lowers your situational awareness. Effective lane changing keeps drives more alert and engaged in the traffic flows.
