Steroid induced diabetes

Just been diagnosed with the above, on top of brittle asthma I’m not happy.

Wondered if there were other veggie/vegan diabetics on here as the info out there all seems to contradict itself.

I need some guidance if anyone can help.

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis I know nothing of veganism and diabetes and would hate to give you the wrong information.

Just take care of yourself and hope you get the answers you seek xx

I had a vegetarian, diabetic friend.

He struggled with his blood sugar levels because of the vegetables he ate.

The dr’s advice....to start eating meat.

I’m Type 2 diet controlled, although I do eat meat it’s not daily consumption and I manage with my blood sugars relatively well.

Though saying that I have my annual review on Wednesday so it could all change!

It just seems all the foods I’m used to eating, veg, fruit, grains I now can’t.

I don’t eat meat or fish, and lactose intolerant so stay away from daily.

What does that leave me to eat

That’s not a great bit of advice for your friend,

I will go see a diet to sort it but in the mean time my BS is high.

Added extra... if you’ve just been diagnosed then your GP should refer you to a management class. My local one was called Desmonds. There is a lot out there on diabetes.org. The main thing is avoid high sugar foods, maintain protein and slow carbs.

You’ll have to start reading the food packages more too. A lot of veggie processed foods have loads of sugar in which you wouldn’t think until you read the labels.

I’m going for raw unprocessed foods as I find them cleaner. I have diabetic nurse Wednesday and I will search out a dietitian.

It’s just a mine field of info and my cals have gone down to 4-500 a day because I’ve literally cut everything.

You can!

There are sites that are really anal about what you can and can’t eat.

Obviously I don’t know what your count was so no idea if it’s extremely high etc

My last one was 42, i’m hoping for under 40 this year.

Look on the diabetes web sites. I eat brown rice, crudités and fruits on my working days.

Home meals can be tricky but don’t get overwhelmed honestly. It’s not a diet, more of a change of food plan.

It may take a few months but you will get your head around it xx

I’m hoping it reverses but as I’m on and off steroids it’s seems unlikely.

I’m just real fed up of the overwhelming exhaustion that I’ve never had before.

I’m blocked from msg you but ask your nurse to refer you to your local group. It should be done as a matter of course anyway.

500 calories is not sustainable with diabetes!

People immediately think sugar sugar sugar but that’s not the case.

Look at carbs that sugar on labels etc they need to be low vs the actual amount of full carbs in the product.

Spend time on diabetes.org & diabetes.co.uk

Knowledge is power

Read about the foods you eat/like. What's their GI process like.. Absorption rate n uptake in body.

Ask to be referred to diabetic dietician. Join a group they are a font of good knowledge.

Sometimes there is no answer as our body works different to the next... Level of exercise.. Food motility.. Gut absorption.

No honey

No fresh fruit juices

No false sugars... Where possible.

Great book by Dr Micheal moseley. 8 week diabetic diet.

But steroid induced is hard to reverse. X

Good luck

Is it, I was told today my 6 nebulisers a day won’t be helping either.

It’s quite hard dealing with 1 chronic illness let alone that illness causing another illness.

It’s early days and as you say lots to learn out there.

Peas are fine!

Low GI of 22, they help balance the spikes
