I know my wifi passkey off by heart, the long number on my visa card. I not only know the scientific names of hundreds of garden plants but also where they like to grow and how to look after them.

So how come i can never remember my mum's birthday?

Somewhere

I’m the opposite. I’ll remember anyone and everyone’s birthday.... everything else? Not so much

Because that’s what a diary/calendar is for

I have a terrible memory. I think mine is a side effect of being a depressive

I used to remember phone numbers, post codes and number plates.

Now I don't know what day of the week it is

Since the introduction of the mobile phone no one seems to be able to remember phone numbers any more.

My long term memory is pretty good. And if I deliberately embed a memory it’s good. But remembering someone’s name after they have just told me or standing in the kitchen wondering what the fuck did I come here for. Useless.

I have terrible trouble with people's names too. I find i have to repeat it several times as soon as they tell me. Then they just end up looking at me as though i'm a bit special.

Yep that’s how I do it. Every opportunity I have to use their name when talking to them helps reinforce it.

I'm dreadful with names but I can remember every word of a conversation held a year ago.

For birthdays I rely on a combination of Facebook and reminders set into my phone calendar.

Probably due to the ways and means for memory and recall, which are varied, rather than 1 type. If you're neurologically healthy, you should be able to improve your memory and recall to some extent, unless you currently have a near perfect system.
