I kept requesting one but nope, I’m too young. However, I’ve now had a baby, so I can have one soon. Ridiculous that you need to be 25 for it

Agreed, it's super important to do. I had my first one about 2 years ago, even though I was really nervous it was definitely worth it for peace of mind.

They need to lower the age of them to 18, it's crazy that young women are dying when there is a test that could save them.

I pushed for one after I had my eldest but I wasn't 25 so they made me wait. Ended up finally getting round to it age 30 (my fault yes) and it was a good job I did as I had to go back for further tests, treatment etc

Would never dream of missing one now

That really is ridiculous, I had to have my first one at age 21 , can’t understand why they have changed the age for it x

I must be one of the few women who has called their GP surgery because I think I'm overdue my smear test...

My mum had abnormal cells many years ago, so am very aware of the necessity.

I didn't realise that you don't get the tests until 25. Could have sworn you used to qualify as soon as you are legally sexually active.

Quite.

The age for free breast checks has also increased from 45 to 50 in recent years.

I'm pretty sure they changed the age about 11 years ago, I thought it was 21, had my daughter at 22 and was told I was too young

I looked into this as I’ve had problems in the past and wanted my daughter to have one. They wouldn’t do it so I said can I pay for it anywhere then. They said there is a high risk of miscarriage in later life of they’re done before 25. We could have paid privately but she chose not to.

Yup.Although they had a pilot in my area where women aged 45-50 were offered them

My friend got a letter. She said her initial thought was " Im only 46. Bloody cheek, I dont need this"

But she went anyway

Lucky she did, or she wouldnt be here now

Cold, hard cash is the bottom line unfortunately

Thanks, and Sparkles as well.

Pleased to know that I am not losing the plot... the NHS is just having to reduce the scheme

I had my first at 21 - I was also 8 months pregnant at the time. I was diagnosed with early stages of cervical cancer. If I hadn't been pregnant I would have probably ignored the symptoms I had & I wouldn't have been picked up by any screening programme due to my age.

I made a full recovery & have never missed a screen since.

I paid for my daughter to be screened before the age of 25 - she now hits the age for NHS

Get your bits out ladies! Dont lose your life for a test so simple & painless yet plenty get it out to be waxed and coiffured!

I had my first at 18 and had abnormal cells which it hen had treatment for. I dread to think what would have happened if I’d waited until the correct age for a smear.

Apparently the age is 25 because your cells in your cervix keep changing up until this age so you're much more likely to get abnormal cells when nothing is actually wrong. This can result in young women having cervical treatments that can affect their ability to carry a child to term and give birth naturally in the future. Obviously if this cervical treatment is neccessary to prevent cancer, then that's a risk worth taking but due to how many women under 25 would end up having these treatments unnecessarily (due to the number of false positives) that could have impacts on them having children in the future, they decided not to start them until 25.

Cervical cancer screening may be changing to a swab for HPV (the virus that causes most cases of cervical cancer) though instead of looking at cervical cells under the microscope so this new year could be offered to younger women. Also there is talk of being able to take the swab yourself at home like you can with STI tests so that might help to increase uptake.

At least there's some method in what appears to be madness.

Up until I had my hysterectomy, I was having smears every year, I'd had abnormal cells a few times but never needed treatment luckily. I no longer have a cervix so I don't need to have them anymore but as soon as my daughter gets older I'll be encouraging my daughter to get hers done.
