As I understand it (from Al Jazeera + BBC), around a dozen medium range ballistic missiles fired by Iran's Revolutionary Guard have hit two US air bases - Ain Al Asad and another I can't recall. US planes are now in the air heading to hit targets in Iran. The tangerine toddler is currently in the situation room with some grownups deciding which toys to throw next and where to throw them. |

I lived in Israel, and yes they are definitely given to reacting fast and hard to any kind of threat. So far, Iran seems to be holding back from attacking Israel - said they will only do so if they allow US to use their air bases. The US plains currently in the air are flying from Diego Garcia so I don't reckon Israel will get hit yet - but you can be sure they'll be on high alert.
Trouble is, even if Israel keep out of it, Iran might still hit them if they feel they want/need other Arab countries to wade in. A mental thing to do, given Israel has more than 200 nuclear warheads and at least two methods of delivery. |

I have 2 friends living near me in Germany that are US citizens and both half Iranian and they are not related. There is also some Israeli Jews and other expats of different nationalities this will affect in my social circle...

If you ask at each side, they'll stamp a separate sheet instead of your passport - but you've got to know to ask... it's not something they advertise. I’ve said this repeatedly on numerous threads now - I’m a political realist, not a moral idealist. Politics doesn’t care about feelings and nor should it. As much as people love to virtue signal and talk about how horrible it is that we could be going to war with yet another Middle Eastern country, fact of the matter is if Iran or any other nation threatening western civilisations grinding gears manages to actually jam the machine, you’ll be the first to know about it. And you’ll be the first to demand something be done about it. Unaffordable petrol and diesel, fuel blockades, protests and food distribution lines will soon have you back demanding we invade this country or that country....setting this tariff or that, economic sanctions on this regime or that...
Global politics is a dangerous game, and whether you choose to admit to yourself or not, everything you do, every single facet of your modern western life, is paid for in blood. Either blood of our armed forces or the blood of the manufacturers or the countries that feed the engine of our society. War is a massive part of it, and has been ever since human civilisation began. There’s only one ancient society that I know of that was founded on trade rather than the necessity of coming together for war.
Charging your phone, the plastic packaging your food comes and stays fresh for long in, even turning the tap on, is all paid for in oil and blood. And all the political machinations of western democracies, whether you want to admit it or not, all goes into maintaining this way of life we enjoy. The way of life that you’d wail and gnash your teeth over if it was directly threatened.
Trust me, being a political realist is easier. Accepting the truth of it, even if you don’t really want to admit it to anyone else because of how ugly it is, is a huge weight off your shoulders. |

Being a bit more of a feet on the ground rather than head in the clouds guy I see climate issues as not what we waste, what we consume etc. It’s just us, there are far too many of us
1800 global population approx 1Billion 2016 6.7billion. Global warming on the increase pretty much since the industrial revolution in the 1800’s & this is what’s blamed.
Together with the growth of worldwide population. Cut the number of population you cut consumption & use of resources. Therefore cutting global warming.

This is the thing. I do not support war in any way, nor do I like Trump but it is naive to think that it can always be avoided.
It is a very tricky and difficult line to walk as there will always be people and countries against others. Some of them (well all of them to be fair) pulling strings in the shadows. One way or another the situation needs to be taken care of.
Yes a lot of this will be used as a distraction, and a chance to profit but at the same time the other side is hardly innocent in things.
What do you do if somebody is plotting and doing pretty horrible things. Just let them continue or try to stop them. Peace talks only do so much. While war does not exactly make things better.
Really is not black and white at all. Global politics and peace between other nations is a very complex dance that I don't think many people fully grasp.
Same goes for the whole allies thing. Go to war as an ally (right or wrong) or don't, and risk fragmenting an alliance. Its just not simple.
