The Saddest Picture I Will Ever See !!
Jump to: Newest in thread
This Bushfire Tragedy in Australia is an unimaginable disaster .
I saw that pic yesterday of dozens of dead Kangaroos and Koalas lying by the roadside and I actually cried for the first time in ages.
I know it's not much as I dont have much but I've donated a tenner to the relief fund .
It shocks me that Australia seems to be trying to deal with this on their own , with little or no help from other countries , either financially or with equipment or manpower .
Entire Ecosystems will be lost and some species virtually extinct .
I'm not even sure what my exact point is on this , I just feel sad and helpless .
This is truly a disaster |

"Agree Grumpy. I don’t think we’ll ever recover from this " I think you are , sadly, correct . Varying stories as to how the fires started, but if any of them were started deliberately, then I hope the culprits are shot in the fucking head !! |

Regardless of how they started is less of the issue, the complete failure of preventing the spread is just as if not more concerning.
Global warming or human source, as it is human error/failure which has allowed the spread |

"I’m going out there on Monday so will get to see first hand just how devastating it really is. Wasn’t part of the plan but no doubt I’ll never forget it after I’ve seen it. "
I don’t envy you... |

Agreed how was there no plan in place whatsoever to at least try and contain some of it, it's madness, surely they knew this was a possibility |

I watched a little bit yesterday as like Gatsby i usually deliberately don’t watch the news, but it was terrible.
The people look so broken (understandably). My heart goes out to them all. And the dead animals.....heartbreaking.

"I'm pretty sure American and Canadian firefighters are out there. I hope so , you guys need as much help as possible. You must be super sad
Mostly exasperated tbh. Bloody politicians. " I dont profess to know exactly what the political agenda is in your country so I cant say too much .
I know many of the firefighters and volunteers arent happy with the government's inaction |

Many years ago I spent a little time visiting Kangaroo Island and found its natural beauty just perfect. It's one of the fondest memories I've got from various travels. To think of over half of it decimated by fire is utterly heartbreaking and almost impossible to imagine.
That's appalling enough but you then try to imagine the scale of disaster on the mainland and it goes beyond what your brain can cope with. There's an illustration on the BBC site - for New South Wales *only*(excluding other states) - which puts it into horrific perspective by superimposing the area affected onto a UK map. It basically covers the whole of the south east, and some.... all of Greater London, Essex, Kent, Sussex, Herts, Berks, Surrey, Beds, Bucks, plus a good part of Suffolk, Oxfordshire, Northants and Hampshire too. There aren't words to adequately describe the hell of it. |

Climate change isn't real, big up mining, oil, and coal, how about that cricket, ay? |

Coming from a country that frequently sees wildfires beyond belief, and having assisted in all kinds of relief around the world and in my own backyard....
They are called wildfires for a reason. No amount of preparation can prepare you, no agency, no government, no one has that capacity. It is fire, and it is unpredictable, and it does not care. I've seen the smallest embers flare up brush to the size of apartment buildings in a matter of minutes. I've had summers here where the sun was blacked out from smoke from fires thousands of miles away - they are that bad. And for fuck sakes - if you see people throw their cigarette butts out their car window throw it right back at them. (Btw that's a 1000 dollar fine here in certain parts; second offence is jail time plus the fine.)
Look for the helpers. And just keep it on your mind. Talk about it. There is relief from dozens of countries coming. But look for those helpers. Support them. These people who make it through are not victims they are survivors and they need to know that.
Because sadly - the worst is yet to come in 6 months when the insurance companies do their adjustments. Blame coal, mining, whatever you want right now but it is the insurance companies who will do the most horrific damage to everyone in the end. And theres no one around to witness that.
