We’ve put it on record.
Did anyone watch the celebrity version that was on last year? Really surprised by some of them in that it was definitely a case of their mind/fears conquered their physical selves.

"Yep. Pretty good. Looking forward to seeing it unfold.
I like the concept of a sneakybeaky DS! I've not seen the show before, have they done that before?"
Yes, they did it for the first time on the last series I believe, was a woman from the Norwegian SF I seem to recall. |

The guys behind the scenes are all pretty fantastic blokes too. You might not see them, but their stories are equally amazing - and not necessarily in the way you'd expect. Can't speak highly enough of them. |

No names, no pack drill, but one of the guys is now highly qualified in the medical world after having to leave due to unexpected chronic illness, however is an absolutely top guy and should he show his grid would have WAY more of you ladies after him than Ant. Middleton. He's a brilliant photographer too! |

Most are ex Royal Marines. You can easily tell as they are holding hands !
Besides they probably tucked up in bed at the Sligahan hotel on Skye every night.
Good entertainment but every ex infantry soldier knows that this is all basic training stuff. |

I’m in the army reserves and grown up around the army so I’d be ok with the authority. I’m mentally tough so I think I’d be ok with that side of things. I’m not anywhere near fit enough for a lot of the physical stuff though. |

I served at Poole some years ago as an attached rank (i.e. NOT SF). so having seen what goes on in reality I'd have to say there'd probably be virtually no one on here who would, except when daydreaming. That's no offence to anyone whatsoever, but would say the perception of a glamorous lifestyle is way off the mark. Yes, there's a kudos to being what they are, but they also have the greatest hardships and their attrition rate is high in terms of injuries etc. in training and on ops. Working with any 'elite' units tends to be far less glamorous than what's in people's heads. Most of the real stuff won't get shown on the TV. |

Episode 3 shows just how hard those lads worked to pass selection.
I would have given it a go but bloody hell... you have to be not only fit but mentally strong and a great team player to get through all that.
It's not like the reality TV you get now. Ant seem like real deal but also that bloke who constantly has a military story for every situation.
I think he would grind anyones patience civilian or not |

"be the grey man.

Only works for a while. Eventually questions get asked as to what you contribute and what value you bring to the team. All are individuals who work well within a team, but if you only look after number one your attitude will be questioned in the end. |

Being the grey man isn’t about looking after number one, ....its about not wanting to stand out, It’s about having true self confidence in You’re own ability and fortitude. a true team player , there for the team and mission .....nothing to prove !!!!!! |

The grayman is description of concealment
I think the point being made was to pitch in and SHOW you are a team player.
My time in the military having character was often the deciding and defining trait
"not telling everyone you are well 'ard" like the TV program
But actually pitching in your (ability) and doing it without being a bellend"

That's partly true. It is about the guy who can survive on his own wits and decision making, but very often grey men don't get to the end of selection (though some do it's true). It gets you so far, but then they want to see . Quite a few who attempt selection think that's what they have to do from beginning to end, often get quite a long way in, but then fail within touching distance. They tend to misunderstand what being the grey man actually means. |

Yep - definitely. Being there, but not having to be 'seen' as the big man all the time - neither at the front, nor the rear, but getting through without a fuss. |

I TOTALLY get that mate! I find it humorous when we get told "You're all the same - cocky and arrogant", which is just more, about a confidence borne of a different kind of life experience, but actually most service people have a lot of humility in my experience and (hopefully humble) opinion. |

I was a right cocky kid as a private and probably as a lance jack. It was not until i did Brecon that i started to calm down. Knocked the heavy drinking on the head and settled into the job as a career. For the first 6 years or so i never gave much thought about how long i would stay in the Army. I can understand why civilians think young squaddies are cocky. Some are some are not. I think as a young soldier you do need to stand out and get noticed. The thing that still annoys me is the amount of bullying in the army. Usually from some old sweat who's spent all his time as a pvt or a jnr nco with a power complex. God knows how many youngsters leave because some twat gets punchy. I never got bullied probably because before joining i did boxing and never bullied anyone my whole career but even as a snr nco i knew it went on when nobody was around. Although when i found anyone bullying they were sraight down to the corner shop.

Not really come across it in the Navy to be honest. Just lucky in some ways, but it was always nipped in the bud quickly, either at higher levels or by the lads in the mess. I know it was quite bad before my time though. |

Indeed they have 'earned their stripes'. It's also true to say that much of the methodology is classified and variable to remain current. The (real) process is designed to select the 'right' guy for the role (not always the best guy). Much can't be inflicted on the civilians taking part, nor can some be televised. The reality is all you're truly getting on TV is a snapshot of that world, which sells TV and is compelling to many, primarily due to the secretive nature of the reality. Credit to all of the guys, including those you don't see in front of the cameras on the show and who assist with the 'Break Point' weekends. It's a 'feel' for their world, with much left out. Just enjoy it for the great TV it creates and be glad there are guys from the Special Forces, specialist forces and the armed forces in general who do what they do. No hero worship required, just be glad if the things they take on that most will never understand. |

this ^^
Dug into a hole somewhere hellish watching a target for days, can't move or you'll be spotted, pissing and crapping yourself etc - maybe they should get the WDW contestants to do that one. I remember a few episodes ago a chap VW'd because he had to take a dump in a latrine possible next to a fellow contestant. WTF ever - man the fuck up. Join the RAF and take your paddling pool to Afghan |

What happened to the 8 miler with 42 Ib under 1hr 20mins ? Or the 25 miler with full kit in 5 hours ?
2k followed by 4k.... fuck i could do that now and I'm 50 something."
We were doing that up until recently, it also involves a load of other operational fitness tests like casualty drags, a dash down crawl section attack lane, half mile Jerry can carry and a load of other tests designed to recreate operational tasks. The tab is easy but the 2k run with rifle, webbing at 9.5kg and an 11kg daysack is quite cheeky.
It's all part of the army modernising how it goes about fitness and being smarter about it rather than just breaking people. Having done CFT's and patrol competitions I can still confirm it's tough testing and not the army going soft. |

"Enjoyed episode 2! That geordie lad has some issues though. "Stop, stop! STOP!!!". "
Which is why he is there to address them.
I think Ant Middleton has been watching too much Karate Kid “FINISH HIM!” |

"Most are ex Royal Marines. You can easily tell as they are holding hands !
Besides they probably tucked up in bed at the Sligahan hotel on Skye every night.
Good entertainment but every ex infantry soldier knows that this is all basic training stuff."

I've met Ant a couple of times, how can you be so disrespectful? You of course know it's a tv show... what hes done for PTSD suffering soldiers and civies alike is priceless. You dont serve in the holy trinity of the Paras, Marines and SBS SF's and not be the real deal. Not sure if you have the first idea what that takes but as I do I for one have nothing but respect. |

You can to some degree. Check out an event called Exercise Executive Stretch online. It's run by the reserve forces from all services and although its not allowed to be as brutal as WDW it's still challenging, fun and great for not only team building, but also finding out who people really are. |

The stuff civvies would pay thousands to do?"
I love the fact is that they all know that it's not going to be a full time job . So they can do things a normal recuit can't.
In the early 80s when I joined your NCOs was God they ran your life.
But I wanted to be in the army. They know that they can walk away at anytime. Yes I could have but I needed the job if this makes sense.
I spent 14 weeks running or matching every where. You had a very sort time to eat. And was up early to wash clean and in bed late trying to get your kit sorted.
But you knew it was what you wanted to do and after the first few weeks it got easier. plus we knew we could go to war and kill someone.or be killed.
The people on TV don't have to worry about that.
