Genuine question - I run a small IT support company and personally have sorted out a few members from here and other sites.

But if you didn't know of someone in the community, who would you go to get a PC sorted?

"A pc repair shop. "

I guess what I am asking is who would you trust to access your data without worrying about them taking copies etc

A pc repair shop. I am naive to what could happen to my info but would trust an established recommended repair shop to repair it and act honourably.

Not sure I'd trust anyone, would ensure it was all backed up, then deleted before I handed it over to anyone

But when you are the husband, where do you go if you can't fix it yourself?

If I can't, generally there's no point taking it to the monkeys in some high street "support" team.

A reasonable level of understanding and Google usually get most things sorted.

But I have been tinkering in computing/networking most of my life.

Can you do data recovery from a hard disk that isn't powering up?

My cousin, who's very experienced with IT. He's taken images of my system, so likely to have found everything that's unusual or outlines my horny lifestyle.

If I didn't have him, I'd try to do it myself, with help from uni IT support, as I'm a student.

My will has instructions for my best friend to inherit my IT stuff immediately, so that family don't have to get the gory full picture.

I’d take it to the local pc repair shop. Isn’t that what they are for? Any reputable business will be operating to the highest professional standards, their business depends on their reputation. I don’t have anything on my pc I wouldn’t be happy for them to access in the course of their job.

Hmmm, I admire your faith in humanity.

What you say is true of the business, but less so of their employees...

Possibly - I have recovered data from drives by transplanting the platter inside into an identical donor drive and quickly backing up the data.

Is the drive an internal drive from a machine or an external USB type attached drive?

The best thing to do is to turn it off and back on again that normally works for the most fixes or do a reset, just back up before you do.

I have a close friend who does computer repair. He's fixed my laptop a few times. He's also known me since we were both 11 and is engaged to one of my closest friends who knows nearly everything about me so is probably not shocked by anything he would find haha.

I work on IT, so I'd do it myself.

Eventually.
