Couple of years ago there was a running club thread that was really good that I actually ended up meeting other fabsters from
So this year I thought I would restart it. Anyone can join. All you have to do is kinda say what run you have done this week
I just done a 5km in 30.15 this morning with another run planned for Saturday.
It doesn’t matter if your just a initial runner that hasn’t run and would like to or a pro runner!!! |

Double parkrun for me today. Both very sociable rather than any real effort although I'm training to get used to running on tired legs and after a tough day in the gym yesterday hurt more than I expected!! |

Plagued by injuries recently but back to a steady 8min mile which is just fine for what I want.
It's great seeing peoples progress, and not just fastest times. |

In all honesty when we run even thinking about swinging couldn't be further from my (her) mind.
Well we had a very good 2019 as far as running is concerned, yesterday we both reached our target of 1000 miles of running for the year. We have had a very busy last few weeks working towards achieving that and we did it...yippee
We have both got plans for ourselves this year, mine is to repeat a few events from last year and improve the timings plus I want to run my first marathon or two.
My better half (Mr) is an amazing runner (in my opinion) and he has marathons and ultra's that he also wants to do.
We have missed these threads as we found them very positive, encouraging and friendly to be part of. We are always happy to chat about our training and all aspects of running.
Best of luck to all for a healthy injury free 2020 |

I has a great years running in 2019 and aim to build on that. Last year Manchester marathon went tits up after I collided with another runner just before halfway and picked up a shoulder injury. Had a month completely off after that for eye surgery but since the summer I've just gone from strength to strength.
Highlights included a second fastest ever marathon at Amsterdam despite running while getting over a cold, first time under 2 hours for a half in 3 years, 5 mile PB, equalled my 5km pb and 2nd fastest ever 10km.
2020 I want PBs at all distances and to not die running the Snowden 24! |

Nice to see this thread back again OP, it was brilliant last time it ran and supported loads of people.
I'm currently (still) injured and waiting on the results of my MRI to find out exactly what the hell is wrong.
I'll be here cheering people on until I can get back out on the road. |

I fell off the treadmill (so to speak) in December and just getting back into it. Went for a four-mile run this morning, around 35 mins.
I've never had any particular aims beyond general fitness though - regular 5 to 7k runs - am thinking this year I should set some! Become more of a regular Parkrunner and get my time to under 25 mins (local course has a bloody big hill!), maybe do a 10k, start properly tracking my distance/time... Moving out of London soon so may actually be able to do some offroad runs! |

The old Fab Crap Runners!!! They were great threads, and some great socials too off the back of them. Great to see this being resurrected
I'm in again, last time round, I was coming off the back of a year of ultramarathons, 2 years down the line I'm back at c25k level
Onwards and upwards though, looking forward to getting back to my previous levels! |

The reason why I restarted is that I am carrying a bit of weight and it was a good to chat with others who are running.
There was a few people at my park run that were doing their double one and fair play to them
For me I was embarrassed to do a park run as I hadn’t run a 5km this year in 2019.
Done one with a swinging friend. Semi decent time and since then done my 4th one with reducing times 31.33 first one and now down to 30.15, average heart rate is also down which shows I am getting fitter

For those that are thinking about starting to run
The couch to 5km is a good plan, but each person is different and depends on level of fitness. Some people may find they can skip a few weeks, when some need to stay at a certain week for an extra week
It took me 2.5 months (end of sept to beginning of December) to get fitness at a level that I could complete a 5km. Tbh I didn’t do running all those weeks either due to other commitments. A Fab friend said we would do it on a certain date. Was worried that I wouldn’t finish it but managed it. Parts I did walk on as well
So from my own experience before you do a parkrun maybe do a couple of 5km before hand. I am on my 5th on Saturday. Yesterday and Saturday was first times I managed it without stopping. Yes breathing heavy. But since my first one, legs have got less heavy, heart rate reduced, times comes down. |

That's impressive mileage!

Who's tried switching to HR zone only training for base building?
I did it several years ago and wow what a difference long term, but it felt like a painfully slow and too easy process at first?
I'm getting back after injuries and contemplating this again. |

I would massively recommend this in your situation. I was in the same place a few years back, constantly injured, and then coming back too soon trying to make up for lost time, and getting injured again.
HR training was my last throw of the dice before I gave up on running, did it solidly for 6 months, and first race back, knocked 2 hours off my 50 mile PB.
If you haven't already, look up Phil Maffetone and his 180 formula |

Thanks. I had a few very difficult years with losing a few very close relatives and a cancer scare myself, so rather than go down the route of drinking alcohol to relieve the stress, I go for a run instead most days. I do train for a few races if the motivation is there to push myself, but mainly it’s stick the headphones in and see how long I feel like running for. |

Also I want to try and encourage people that are maybe scared that you can’t run or haven’t run before to try it.
Reading through the thread it appears that there is a range of abilities from your marathon runners to those that are starting off.
I ran about 103km in to total last year (health reasons) . Not great at all but better than nothing. My goal this year to better that by at least 200%. So to run 300 km by the end of the year!!!!, and also get my 5km time to 28 mins flat - started off park running at 31.33. there are 56 different London park runs and my goal is to try and do half of them at least once.
This means I have to run just under 6km a week!!!!! Or 35-40 mins a week time wise. For the weeks that I can’t do park run due to other commitments then i will do smaller runs during the week and hopefully my fitness by the summer will be at a level that I can do training runs of 5km+ during the week
By Saturday I would be 3% of my goal in to running 300 km!!!!
So my suggestion would be for the even the new runners to set a weekly / monthly goal and aim for that!!!! |

In the spirit of encouraging others, when I first met my girlfriend I had been running for several years, she was totally up front that she wouldn't run, not her thing and she wasn't built for it. She preferred her dance classes so she did those and I ran till one day she had a bad back and couldn't do her class so we picked a route she could walk around in roughly the time I ran one of my local routes.
Being a competitive person she wanted to be home before me so secretly ran little bits and found she actually enjoyed the challenge. This built till she was running big sections of her walk, only walking the up hills and before long even these became possible.
In the nearly two years since she has fallen in love with running, pushed herself constantly, lost two stone in weight and gained confidence and experience. Last year we both managed 1000 miles (ticking the last few on new years eve) - significantly more than I've ever run before thanks to her support. She's also entered her first marathon and this is the first time for a while now I've seen her worry about her ability to achieve a distance.
To me this shows anyone can run, doesn't matter whether you believe it or not, you just need perseverance and I think that only comes from genuine enjoyment of a sport. There are always days that are hard, you feel slow, every step is an effort, you question why you put yourself through it etc but somehow, once it's over you're glad you got out and that's enough to tide you over to the next run that is pure enjoyment.
It doesn't matter what shape you are, how little you can run, how often you need to walk, if you want to run just do it - it could turn out to be totally life changing. |

Last year I ran just over 2000 km’s, I’ve found over the years that consistency is the key and don’t over do it. A lot of new runners start out going too much too soon, you need rest days to recover. I’m happy to help anyone if they have any questions |

So for those of you that are starting off and worried about the quick times please don’t be.
When I started about 3.5 months ago I struggled to run 1.8km in 11.30 without nearly throwing up. Was a mess after.
Regular runs over a couple days at a mixture of distances no more than 3.5km got me to the stage where I felt I could push on after a couple of months
Whilst 5km is a challenge and it’s not easy still I am finding less challenging each week.
Also switching to running leggings, and tshirt, having a small drink 30 mins before race then stripping hoody or sweatshirt off 10 mins before helps.
Each of us has a different technique. I don’t eat before a race as it makes stomach to full and I feel sick. Normally a loo stop helps as well

I finally got a pair of running leggings in the Christmas sales - it does make a difference when the temperature drops (had previously run in shorts all year round - numb legs ahoy!). I also invested in one of those tops with a hoop for your thumb to go through. Having warm/comfortable/effective enough clothes can be that extra bit of encouragement you need to get out when it's miserable.
I also can't have anything in my stomach when I run. And I find it easiest to roll out of bed and go straight out: the chances of me going for a run after work are slim! As you say, it's a case of finding out what works for you. |

I've turned my Strava off for Winter runs and I've definitely dropped intensity. Over the Summer I was doing 10km regularly with sub 4:30 per km splits which was pushing it for an oldie! |

4.18k this morning. Muddy windy slidey, quite quick for me though.
That's all I had time for.
I was managing between 7 and 10k before Christmas so want to get back to that pretty quickly.
