I hire on attitude.

You can't train someone to have a better attitude / work ethic / mindset.

They can learn the skills, and I can give them the knowledge, but attitude has to be right.

I've found you need a mix of natural and hardworking along with experienced and new blood

I've also found women to be much more hard working than men.

If you get around 80% staff retention your doing your job right

local, but not too local

I’m looking for a very specific set of skills, so they need a proven track record in something relevant.

In the interview I’m looking for attitude and interpersonal skills, flexibility and intelligence.

Then there’s a technical test.

Depends on the job seriously .......

I'd take natural talent over hard work if we were turning out artistic masterpieces..... A hard worker just makes shit products at a greater rate ....

As I don't know what the job is ......

Look for a person with interpersonal skills.

Someone who lightens mood and encourages others.

Someone who makes friends and builds teams....

Fuck all else.

Experience is the key these days at interviews

Degrees

But mine would need common sense more importantly

Common sense, motivation etc. I’m not sure really. Whenever I interview people I just seem to know and it’s worked so far.

Beware of bullshitters. Just being able to interview well I no guarantee of quality. I've seen too many over promoted arseholes because of the strength of a coached interview.

Attitude always! Plus, a natural interest in wanting to work with others and ability to communicate.

If I was hiring for my business it would have to be a combination of both. Some people have a keener eye for precision and accuracy than others. They wouldn't need to have the specific skills to do the job from the get go as I can teach that but it's hard to turn a sloppy worker into what I would need to maintain the quality of work I produce. I know with myself I was far from the fastest in my classes at university but I know my attention to detail and quality of my work was always good so if I was looking to employ staff I would be looking for similar. Speed isn't a benefit if it compromises quality and I don't think being fast is the same thing as being a hard worker.

I think natural talent would win out everytime as that person would be easier to get started working on their own to a satisfactory standard. A hard worker is great, but they may not have any aptitude for the business. I would look for a mixture of both ideally. Someone who wants to work hard and can be taught to refine their skills and develop new ones.

How would you know they are a hard worker if they have never worked for you before?
