cameras have been allowed into court to record the sentencing of Dave Gilroy. It was then transmitted via news channels It is the first time that sentencing has been filmed so makes legal history.
Are cameras in court a good thing, making the system more transparent and less scary? Or will they mean that the administration of justice is compromised as lawyers become more interested in their media and tv profiles?

Yes, there should be a dedicated channel broadcasting courts, including Magistrates.
The cameras could be fixed, i.e. on the Bench, defendant, defence and prosecution, with say a 15 min delay in broadcast, to allow some editing and to prevent protests, posturing and preening

I think with the level of faith the public have in the judicial system that it's important they actually get to see it working. It may even end up an important feedback loop for future change.

Am I right in thinking the cameras in ths case is just for the sentancing and not covering the whole case?
I think that's ok but of course it will just turn into a media circus if a whole case was covered, especially a high profile or very sensitive one which would be an emotional disaster for the victim and their families. I also don't think that the accused should get any more attention than they get already.
Would I watch a televised court case? Yeah, probably |

I don’t really mind one way or the other,,,,,,
But I wouldn’t watch it anyway as I find the whole idea of regularly spending time watching the lives of other unfold would interfere with the things I wish to accomplish with my life…….!.
But hey…….!…….    thats just me !! |

For sentencing I think it is OK, but I have serious reservations about the rest of the time.
What will the impact be on a jury?
What will the impact be on victims?
What will the impact be on witnesses?
What happens if someone is accused of something really nasty and found not guilty... but people in their community only watched the bits where they were accused? |

I disagree with it. I fail to see any reason why it could be argued for in a positive light beyond voyeurism.
If you were a witness or a jury member in a sensitive case would you want to be on TV?
Plus of course there is the fact that the vast majority of cases (including high profiles) can actually be quite tedious. |

i think it is wrong ,i see there is a programe with live sound recordings of the 9,11 atacks,and last moments of that ship that toppled over ,this i feel is the same do we need to sensationieles this ,my fear being that one day it will just become another voyiers sport and when do people become desensatiesed to the horrors that people commit against other humans,and because of this TV showing or recording of court caces does it become exceptable behavour"the norm" |
