is apparently too busy for it's own good. the lack of capacity for extra flights now has a lot of airlines thinking of ditching the airport.

so, should we suck it up and consider whacking in another runway and prevent the hole the threatened airline action would leave in our economy?

BA have just bought the loss making BMI from Lufthansa. Not because they think they can turn it around but solely for BMI's slots.

There's a few proposals..A third Runway at Heathrow. Boris Island in the Thames Estuary or Richard Roger's plan for the Isle of Grain (which is about 6 miles from our house) All three of them are going to attract vociferous opposition down here and will lead to widespread protests in the areas concerned.

Just a thought,Why not get the trains to run properly and quickly(and with fares at a comparable level to planes) and then stop all internal flights in the UK? Do that many people really need to fly from London to Glasgow or Edinburgh?

A lot of the domestic flights are used for interlining as opposed to point to point travel.

Heathrow is also one of the worlds busiest INTERNATIONAL airports - reducing or barring domestic travel from there would not reduce passenger numbers sufficiently to prevent expansion being necessary.

BA has moved it's business model out of the regions to a hub and spoke operation, with Heathrow and Gatwick being the only UK hubs.

The use of code sharing agreements and the growth in airline alliances also means that they will interline passengers for their alliance partners as well as their own flights.

It is no different to what KLM-Air France do with Amsterdam and CDG or what Lufthansa do with Frankfurt.

However, those airports have existing space to cope with the expansion.

Heathrows main problem is that it is now surrounded by the sprawl of London and has physical boundaries in place.

Gatwick is a non-starter for development due to location and the local environmental lobby.

There is no easy choice to make - but one government is, at some point, going to have to make one very contraversial, unpopular and uncomfortable decision.

Why not demolish Staines completely and tarmac the whole place for an extra 20 runways. Get rid of Gatport Airwick too.

Windsor Castle would make a wonderful option for Terminal 6

The Americans would be instantly enchanted !

The added benefit of which is that the tree huggers will have nothing to hug and will have to go get a job and start contributing to the treasury like the rest of us.

Turn them into carnival floats and sell them at Notting Hill for a quick turnaround.

No Need for internal flights in the uk??? How about pepole as far north as us? do you realy think someone would build a high speed line up to us? who would pay for it? and it would still be over 8hours to get south compared to just over an hour on a plane. or how about pepole who live on the islands i.e lewis, bara, the uists, orkney or the shetland islands. for them the air link is a lifeline. a lot of the pax are pepole traverling to hospital etc. blood and drugs travel most days and all the mail is flown along with the daily papers are you going to build a line to them???
