And the men who hold high places
Must be the ones who start
To mold a new reality
Closer to the heart
The blacksmith and the artist
Reflect it in their art
They forge their creativity
Closer to the heart
Philosophers and plowmen
Each must know his part
To sow a new mentality
Closer to the heart
You can be the captain
And I will draw the chart
Sailing into destiny
Closer to the heart |

So so many that I love for different reasons but the one I always name on these threads is the whole of Down In The Tube Station At Midnight by The Jam - it's poetry with menace with verses like:
I first felt a fist, and then a kick
I could now smell their breath
They smelt of pubs, and wormwood scrubs
And too many right wing meetings
My life swam around me
It took a look and drowned me in its own existence
The smell of brown leather
It blended in with the weather
Filled my eyes, ears, nose and mouth, it blocked all my senses
Couldn't see, hear, speak any longer
I'm down in the tube station at midnight, oh
I said I was down in the tube station at midnight, oh |

That's Entertainment beats it on lyrics surely, the "tranquility of solitude" alone |

Walkaway by Cast
If you've heard all they got to say
You looked but turned away
Walkaway, walkaway
If you've said all you got to say
And now the words just slip away
Just walkaway, walkaway, walkaway
That's what they say, what they say,
what they say
You gotta walkaway |

Take the time to make some sense
Of what you want to say
And cast your words away upon the waves
And sail them home with acquiesce
On a ship of hope today
And as they land upon the shore
Tell them not to fear no more
Say it loud, and sing it proud today
And then dance if you wanna dance
Please brother take a chance
You know they're gonna go
Which way they wanna go
All we know is that we don't
Know how it's gonna be
Please brother let it be
Life on the other hand
Won't make us understand
We're all part of the masterplan
Say it loud and sing it proud today
I'm not saying right is wrong
It's up to us to make
The best of all the things
That come our way
'Cause everything that's been has passed
The answer's in the looking glass
There's four and twenty million doors
On life's endless corridor
Say it loud and sing it proud today
We'll dance if they wanna dance
Please brother take a chance
You know they're gonna go
Which way they wanna go
All we know is that we don't
Know how it's gonna be
Please brother let it be
Life on the other hand
Won't make you understand
We're all part of the masterplan
Noel Gallagher.

First time I heard those lyrics I thought wow, decent rock with decent lyrics that really mean something. I suspect I may possibly have the biggest rush vinyl collection in the country. Used to scour all the record fairs for anything and everything they produced. |

"Rush fans suddenly the world seems that bit happier. "
First saw them I think it was 1987 and the world became a lot happier then, rolled up at Wembley arena when they were sound checking and could hear from the car park, awesome moment. |

Must go bed so to end the thread and no more comments best 5 lyrics in a song are:
Nick Cave - into my arms
Neil Young - the needle and the damage done
Leonard Cohen - Sisters of Mercy
Belle and Sebastian - Lazy Line Painter Jane
Half Man Half Biscuit - National Shite Day
Thanks very much everyone. Goodnight. Anyone that disagrees will meet the wrath of Cruel Mistress Lisa and her whip lol xx

Weller was a lyrical genius and it's hard to pick just one of his but Tube Station will always steal it for me as I like storytelling songs and the way this story unfolds just perfectly conjures up images in your head - That's Entertainment and Butterfly Collector are both damned good alternative suggestions though, Private Hell is another contender and Little Boy Soldiers and so many more |
