Den of Iniquity

So the annual offence police and certain radio DJs are refusing to play it because the word " faggot" appears in the song .

Aside from the fact the song is 32 years old , also Shane McGowan has repeatedly explained it's an integral part of the characters personality and not meant as an offence .

So what's your thoughts on this ??

PS :- Its the best Xmas song ever

I agree that it's part of the song, its 32 years old and people need to stop looking for things that offend them.

Driving Home For Christmas by Chris Rea is the best song though

"I like it. I'm not offended by it."

I don’t have an issue with ‘.Faggot’ but the use of ‘slut’ is gratuitous with no artistic merit.

Best Christmas song is Greg Lake - I believe in Father Christmas.

Banning words on the radio won't stop them being used by people nor inventing new slurs. It's all context anyway.

I think it is a sad reflection of the fact that people now feel they have to appear to be squeaky clean and not cause any offence to anyone in any way.

It’s a great song and if the word is viewed in the context that it is used there is only offence if you’re looking to be offended.

In my opinion.

It's a song, aimed at a certain period in time, when those words were part of the language.

I don't like the word faggot, wouldn't use it, but in the context of the song, I don't find it offensive.

And, yes.

It is the best Christmas song ever.

I'm just as concerned about

"Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way"

What’s with this song making people feel like they have to “jingle all the way”?

Seriously? People need to know that they have the right to revoke their consent to jingle at any moment, even if they’ve already starting jingling, and even if the person they’re jingling with is someone they’ve jingled with before.

And

What about "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas"

Seriously ?How racist is that !!

Well-meaning but misguided. It's a song about a couple who fight a lot and call each other names. It's not condoning anything.

A different contraversy is that Shane McGowan doesn't play the piano but they fiddled the video to make it look like he did.

So can we also ban the flowing then :

The 12 Days of Christmas, with its celebration of killing game birds, surely it is offensive to vegans?

We Wish You a Merry Christmas, surely it alienates people without kin?

And the bullying that goes off in Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, purely offensive and disgusting behaviour.

"festive" - relating to a festival, especially Christmas. Still offensive. "holiday" - not everyone gets time off, so offensive to those who don't.

"song" - offensive to those whose job is to write instrumentals.

You can either say everything, or say nothing.

There are a few definitions of the word, only one is deemed offensive. In the song, the word is not directed at a homosexual man so there's not really any direct intentional insult to the LGBT community. It's also really hard to find a word that rhymes with "maggot" that would make any sense to the song

Music, like other matters, is subjective.

I cannot abide Tale of New York, but then again, I'm much older than the generation who grew up around that song, whereas I grew up with more traditional Christmas music (as a member of formal choirs) plus growing up with Xmas tunes from the 50's to 70's, within which there was such variety to choose from.

Everyone will vote differently for their favourite song, Xmas tune, film etc. You'll never get a clear winner that suits everyone.

Shane McGowan has also said he doesn't give a fuck if people censor it, he just doesn't agree.

So if the artist doesn't care, why do other people who have nothing to do with the song argue so strongly about it?

I think it's wrong to change the lyric. My view is that once a piece of art, in any form, has been given to the world, it belongs to the world and shouldn't be amended. I would rather they blanked or bleeped the word rather than change it, to acknowledge that it has been removed due to modern sensitivities. Having said that, I don't particularly like the song.

I may just be a paranoid conspiracy theorist but I can't get the idea out of my head that while 'they' feed us this stuff over here and we are all arguing about it and such, what are they doing over there that they don't want us to know about?

Oh and 'Baby it's cold outside' - Is that a playful song about a guy teasing a woman who really does want to stay? Or is it about a sexual predator spiking a womans drink?

Everyone should have the same rights to live in this society regardless of gender, sexual orientations, colour, race etc. It's our actions we should be judged on in my humble onion.

But we need a balance. Somewhere between taking away the things that will stop people being able to live a good happy life and also saying 'ok, I don't like that but I know it's not intended to fuck me up so I will just turn that song off/not attend that kind of comedy show/not watch that film etc'
