Perfume is a personal thing and will smell different on different people, depending on their body temperature, skin chemistry, hormones etc.

Ask what they like instead.

Perfume is too personal to buy unless you know what she likes. If you know she wears a particular brand, like Dior. You could buy one of the Dior ranges for example.

The original Paul Smith for women. It's quite light and sweet. Or Nina by Nina Ricci. Fruity and comes in a beautiful bottle shaped like an apple.

It's lush, I got some when my bf went to the States a couple of months ago. Very feminine and not overpowering and it looks so cute on your dressing table.

I use Musc Oil by Narciso Rodriguez, it’s pricey but a tiny bit is very effective and it’s very sensual.

Anything by Chanel or Dior is always a good shout. My fave mens fragrances are by Chanel. And don't buy it from a dude on the market

Does it smell esp good on you? There's one called Sensuous by Estee Lauder and whenever I wear it people go nuts, men and women. No5 is a gorgeous scent, no question.

"John Lewis vouchers, a wide range of perfumes in there. "

Great idea to give a voucher.

Perfumes really are a personal choice and what suits one lady smells totally different on another.

My personal favourites are..

J’adore

Rock n Rose

Chanel 19

Opium

Clarin Eau Dynamisante

All depends on the occasion.

Tom Ford - Black Orchid. Lasts ages and smells divine.

But check what perfume she already has and just replenish what is running out is a safer bet.

One of the perfume shops does a subscription service where they send you perfumes to try. Can't remember which off the top of my head. Might be another option given how personal it can be.

At 51, I qualify as 'more nature's, but I've worn both no. 5 and no. 19 for 30 years. Both are distinctive scents though.

I'd go with the miniatures suggestion. The JP Gaultier miniatures are little works of art & are very collectable
