"Should it be made illegal in the UK ?"
I said no as I think I need an eye test and thought you said make it legal....which wouldn't make sense on my answer as it is already legal by the looks of it....but then thats nothing new about sense and answers.
So the answer is I don't think people should have monkeys for pets, so making it illegal might stop some people having them. |

"Should it be made illegal in the UK ?
Are we talking monkeys, or chimps and apes?"
The news article I saw on the BBC this morning specified monkeys, but I haven't looked into it to see how specific the legislation is already & how far it is proposed to go. |

I dont think its fair to keep them as pets . Dont know anyone these days that has one ..used to be popular years ago. I think people should have to get licences to keep exotics prove we are able to care for them properly .This includes the parrots I keep snakes iguana's. Too many people keep animals in bad conditions.
I think dogs should need licences too. |

After seeing what captivity can do to primates, I would go with a licencing scheme! There was one lady, keeping primates in proper conditions (for captivity) and hers were very healthy and seemed contented.
Other side of the coin is those kept solitary and indoors.. They are social animals just like us and as solitary confinement is only ever used short term in our penal system, why should we subject any animal to that?
One was particularly distressing actually had Rickets from the lack of vitamin D and was quite badly deformed. Another just sat in his cage at a rescue centre and rocked back and forth!
Properly domesticated animals, cats, dogs and perhaps some of the other "normal" pets, but exotics should be left out of the lists of so called pets!
Since when has a 50cm x 100cm glass care been a suitable substitute for a 1.5mtr snake that would normally roam far and wide? So it is not just monkeys that need to be looked at, but all sorts of small caged living things... |

"If we taught them how to do things for us then they would be slaves.... And we can't have slaves so end of problem.
People with aid dogs might disagree with that one."
For about thirty years capuchin monkeys have been 'helping hands' and companions to many severely physically disabled people. They are not all kept to jump about as organ grinders entertainers or pose for photographers. |

Most definately yes and made illegal thro out the world
Monkeys and apes are very socialble animals keeping one as a pet does untold damage to its mind, plus in the wild monkey babys stay with their mother for several years, some stay in a family group for life, taking a baby away from its mother when its only a few months old to make a profile is cruel, they go thro the same imotions as us, many monkeys can suffer fropm depression and they actually mourn the loss of their infant
Plus when kept in solitary confinement they are prone to sef mutilation and a lot start pulling their hair out or eating their own tail
They are very intelligent animals and have the same need for company as us so they should not be kept in a cage they arnt not pets they are wild animals |

Weren't they going to do this a few years back when people wanted them after Homer Simpson had a helper monkey?
I get people having a few of them but one on its own is just cruel being on its own never mind the captivity issue. |
